Bentoft Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 (edited) I have made a small webpage where everyone can upload a Castle Figure to be coolness compared with other figures. I have implemented the elo ranking system (chess ranking) to give the figures score. It is a little hard to explain, but check it out and maybe upload your figure and join the fun: http://bentoft.dk/lego/coolestcastlefig Improvement ideas are very welcome Edited August 15, 2012 by Bentoft Quote
Haltiamieli Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Interesting idea, but the upload doesn't seem to work? Quote

smellsgood Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Cool idea. One suggestion: when viewing the scoreboard, I'd like to click on those little photos to view the minifigure at a larger size. Quote

Yeah, I can see that I want to do that too. MAybe just a mouse over function to view the pictures fast. Quote
LauraC Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Really nice idea! Hope it takes off and lots more entries get added! Quote
fhomess Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 When I first went there, I got two figs. After choosing one, the next voting option was the exact same two figs, just switched. Quote

Ferrik Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 That's an interesting concept. I'll be sure to take a look every now and then. Quote
Phyre Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 (edited) That's a great idea! Hopefully a lot more people get involved with this. I'll upload some of my figures now. EDIT: I'm having problems uploading... Whenever I try, it says "invalid file." My picture fits the requirements (300x300 pixels and JPG), and I've tried uploading it both from my computer and from brickshelf, but nothing seems to work... Edited August 17, 2012 by Phyre Quote
Bentoft Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 Those of you who had problems uploading should try again. I think it will work now. Quote
Haltiamieli Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 (edited) Congrats on crossing over 10.000 "duels"! The amount of figs in the system has also been rising nicely. I'm not completely convinced that the elo ranking actually works that well used like this, but it sure is interesting to skim through the variety of everyone's designs. And maybe that's the most important thing, rankings just add some entertainment value (them changing and turning upside down all the time doesn't bother if you look it that way). The UI of the page is awesomely simple and uploading is easy with low threshold. As an improvement suggestion, shouldn't users be able to jump to any page of the ranking list, like "PREV 1-15 16-30 31-45 46-60 NEXT"? Also, on the upload page the box for the figure's name should specify how long the name can be and not allow typing longer names, to avoid truncated names like "His Sole and Most Highest Majesty Hyakinthos II. D". Edited August 19, 2012 by Haltiamieli Quote

One person doing fights can easily get his favorite figure in top. There are however some constants in the elo system I could tune a little. When a figure wins, it can get 32 point from the other figure. That is a lot of points considering that there are only 46 figures in the game (46*1500 points). That means that the figures can jump a lot up and down the rankings. Quote
Siercon and Coral Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 First I think this is a great little site. You did a solid job and made it entertaining. The addition of the mouse over makes it work so much better. I like how that makes it become more about the builds than the ranks. Cause even beyond the 'leaders' there are some great little figure ideas and techniques spread throughout. I'm not entirely familiar with the Elo system, but I'm assuming that if say this was going at its current rate for over a year, and then someone brought in a new player. If deserving, he could still ascend quickly right? If so I think this would be something totally worth expanding. Or if not expanding, placing in a smaller, but more prominent spot. Perhaps talk to classic-castle.com and see if you can get a small permanent link, or even here on eurobricks, otherwise i give it until this post hits page two and it'll start to die :(. I just think you'd need to find something that can constantly refresh and get traffic. Maybe even a flickr group with a sticky post could work. That way people would see that there is new material. Then multiple threads could be created, for space, castle... Lmk if im not making sense. :) You could also leave a little blurb for people to add stories or character bios? If this gets huge... there may even need to be a ground out level. If you descend below __00 then that pic is retired. :-/ otherwise people may not plod through the mass of photos to vote. I also totally agree with what you guys are saying about people being able to swing the vote. But, if someone is gonna sit there and try to compete with dozens of others who are honest and impartial... lol they need to go find a job or something, and it's usually pretty obvious. "How did that get there?" I dont think there is much you can do about it, and as long as it's fun it's barely worth the headache to bother with. Sorry for all the unwarranted thoughts/suggestions! I could honestly have been happy to simply say you have a great idea, and you've done a great job with it! Keep it up :D Quote
Bentoft Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Your thoughts/suggestions are in no way unwanted, in fact they are very much desired! I am also proud that one of my favorite builders added a figure :-D I know this might die out as soon as this thread reach page two, and that might be soon. I cannot see where the page could be on classic castle or eurobricks, but your idea with a flickr group might work well. In fact my vision is that it should be possible to join the fight just by adding a picture to a flickr group. It might be possible via the flickr api, then it would also be easy to expand, maybe even beyond lego. The elo ranking is designed to let a good player reach his true rank fast. However, a players chess skills is a little more stable than random peoples thoughts on lego figures. But I think it work ok. Would it be stupid to let new figures add a story when the old once does not have one? Quote
Haltiamieli Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Would it be stupid to let new figures add a story when the old once does not have one? Maybe the old ones could have it added manually (like posted here/emailed or something and then added by you to the page)? There's only around 50 figs now, so maybe it wouldn't yet be too much bother. I too had thought about suggesting small bios. Quote
Phyre Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I agree on all of that. The elo system would work a lot better with a lot more figures and a lot more people doing fights. Any ideas on how to make people upload figures? One person doing fights can easily get his favorite figure in top. There are however some constants in the elo system I could tune a little. When a figure wins, it can get 32 point from the other figure. That is a lot of points considering that there are only 46 figures in the game (46*1500 points). That means that the figures can jump a lot up and down the rankings. When I started uploading my figures, I was admittedly biased, voting for my figures whenever they appeared, often regardless of how cool the opposing figure was. But then I realized that not only was this not fair, but it altered where my figures "should" be. In other words, when I look at the rankings I'm interested to see what other people think of my figures compared to everyone else's (and each other). When I give my figures unfair votes, it messes up the results so to speak and my figures aren't accurately ranked. Anyway, what I started doing was only voting when the two figures were not mine, or when they were both mine, and refreshing the page whenever it was mine vs. somebody else's. I'm really interested in seeing this really take off, and I'd really like to see a lot more figures getting added regularly. I have a few more of mine to still upload, but we need more participants, more overall figures, and more people voting to get truly accurate results. It's a really fun and cool idea, and hopefully we can get some more participants. It would be great if we could get this site on the front page of Eurobricks as a news story. I think that would really help more people to get involved. Quote

Bentoft Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 Maybe - or just the fact that I bumped this thread :-D Quote
soccerkid6 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 This is an excellent idea I'm much surprised to see my fig Sir Glorfindel is ranked No. 2 right now Quote
Capt. Bluebeard Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 (edited) Interesting (and very addictive) idea! I've uploaded a minifig too, just for fun. EDIT: Just realised that the pictures have to be exactly 300x300 Have sorted it out now of course, and have even added some new ones too! Bluebeard, out- Edited September 2, 2012 by Capt.
