"Relax, dragon. I've learned a long time ago that giant hoards of valuables are either cursed, a trap, a mirage or owned by someone that can snap you in half without breaking a sweat."

Benji shouts out to the dragon or whoever else is in the room: "Hello! We are searching for a boy named Shaun! Have you any clue of his whereabouts? We do not come to take your gold, despite my companions' jests."

Benji shouts out to the dragon or whoever else is in the room: "Hello! We are searching for a boy named Shaun! Have you any clue of his whereabouts? We do not come to take your gold, despite my companions' jests."

The glowing eyes detach themselves from the darkened ceiling, and in one loud swoop the dragon lands on the heap of gold in front of the party.

"I'M GLAD TO HEAR YOU'RE NOT THIEVES", the dragon booms. "BUT A BIT DISAPPOINTED AS WELL. I'M BORED, AND A GAME OF "ROAST THE ROBBER" WOULD HAVE CHEERED ME UP. THERE'S ONLY ONE OTHER THING THAT COULD MAKE ME FEEL LIKE TALKING TO YOU... CAN YOU GUESS WHAT IT IS?"

The dragon lets out a sound that resembles purring. She runs her claws through the treasures, making them clatter and ching.

Thothwick stood still, mouth wide with agog, as the Dragon landed and yelled at the party. "I've only seen one this close up before, and this is far more elegant than the Wyvern. It's beauty surpasses the elegant creatures I witnessed from afar in Dastan."

"Please, we've not come here to harm you, or pillage your treasures. As previously aforementioned, we've arrived here via our search for a lost boy. But, I've so many questions, and I am most interested to learn more about your race. How did you come to be here? Do you hail from Dastan? Are there many more of your kind here, or around Eubric?"

"Would you like some more gold? You know what they say - um, gold is nice yeah"

"I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK. ONCE THIS ENTIRE CAVE WAS FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH GOLD, BUT NOW ALL THAT REMAINS IS THIS MEASLY PILE..."

The dragon purrs again as she talks about her favorite subject.

The dragon ignored the Metasimian and the others. The party had not won her to their side, yet.

Guts counts out 50 golden coins, and adds them to the pile.

The dragon sniffs the coins as they hit the pile.

"THAT'S... A START."

Giving Guts a sly nod, Thothwick walked towards the treasure pill, knelt down, and reach into his coin purse.

"I present to you a tribute of 87 gold, to you, the most elegant of Dragons."

Thothwick backed away to the party, bowing to the Dragon as he did so.

"Oh come on. What are you going to do with all this gold anyway? It's not like you have weapons to upgrade, potions to buy! You see that guy?" Guts points at Sir Daggerfall. "He's the kind of guy that kills your kind in the stories. A trained dragon-wrangler! We just want to find out where Shaun is, I think my tribute was well enough for you to help us. Or do I have to pay some more for the deluxe package with included dragon-flight. That'd be kinda cool."

"THANK YOU. YOU MAY CALL ME SMARAGDEA. OH, HOW I LONG FOR THE GLORIOUS DAYS WHEN I COULD LITERALLY SWIM IN GOLD..."

The dragon seems to indicate that the 137 gold given is still not enough.

The dragon's eyes narrow into slits.

"IS THAT... A THREAT? YOU DO REALIZE THAT I COULD SWALLOW YOU AND YOUR "SIR" OF A FRIEND IN ONE GULP, DON'T YOU?"

The party's stance with the dragon has taken a step back.

"Not a threat, dragon, I'm just warning you, don't make me angry, he is a dragon killing machine. Believe me, bigger dragons than you have tried. Now you are trying my patience. You can sit there and talk the big talk, or you can actually help us so we can leave and you can go back to rolling in your pile of gold, or whatever it is you dragons do. What will it be?"

The baffled dragon looks at the other party members. Fume rises from her nostrils.

heroicaquest44-smaragdea.jpg

"IS THIS MAN SERIOUS? DO ALL OF YOU THINK THAT HE'S IN HIS RIGHT MIND TO BARGE INTO MY LAIR AND THINK HE CAN CALL THE SHOTS?"

Smaragdea then turns to Guts. Her voice has lost all softness, and is now cold and grim.

heroicaquest44-smaragdea.jpg

"YOU CAN THANK YOUR LUCK THAT I'M ACCUSTOMED TO YOU HUMANS. OTHERWISE YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS WOULD BE TOAST BY NOW."

heroicanpc-skuld.jpg

"Please, Lady Dragon! We only want to find my friend Shaun!"

heroicaquest44-smaragdea.jpg

"I AM NOT IN THE MOOD TO HELP YOU."

The dragon turns her back to the party and lays down on top of the pile of gold.

"This beast is not going to help, girl. I thought this Tiamateus guy was a friend of Heroica. It seems his dragon is not. No help, no gold. It is that there are children watching, otherwise you'll end up like the dragon that rested in the quarry close to here, wounded, beaten, her hatchlings dead, her hoard gone, and she herself running like a scared cat."

Guts picks back up his fifty gold.

"So I assume we have to entertain this dragon. Let's see how a riddle goes."

Dreyrugr turns to the dragon and speaks in a louder voice.

"What has roots which no one sees and is taller than the trees. Up and up it goes and yet it never grows."

Answer: A Mountain

"Guts, you idiot. Do you have no respect for this noble creature! I'm ashamed at your behavior." Benji turns to the dragon as if she were more of a friend to him then any of the heroes. "Smaragdea, if it will please you I will offer you all of my gold - down to the last coin. Nothing is too much for a beautiful creature like you. I understand what its like, to once have been great and mighty, and then be reduced to a pitiful state. I do not own much gold - a mere fraction of even what you have right now, but I will give it all to help you redeem your former glory. I am still trying to redeem my honor, and I would do anything to help another in need." Benji pauses for a second, (perhaps he had revealed too much of his identity?) and then gruffily turns away. "Thats all I have to say." He says with a grunt.

"Nah, I don't have any respect for dragons. They are glorified, kleptomanic lizards, if you ask me. The last two big ones I met tried to kill me as soon as they saw me, either this one is still waiting for it's chance, or will kill me on my way out. I say we leave. Now."

"I say you shut the **** up and learn to respect elder races. Now."
