Than take a hint from the modular line and make them conncetable with technic pins and stackable, and you have a school that can be as big or small as you want. You can do the same with a house theme (i.e. Friends, LEGO has made plenty of sets, but if they added floors and walls to many of them you could build a large house.) Same would work for a mall, zoo, hospital, etc.

This is a concept that Lego has largely moved away from in recent years. For example, the old Castle themes used to have connectable pins, as did the first batch of Harry Potter sets. It's a really cool idea that I could see Lego using in other themes, like the Zoo that you mentioned. Imagine having 6 or 7 Zoo sets of varying sizes that could all be hooked together into a coherent whole. I don't know why Lego doesn't do more with that concept.

I imagine it might work better with a zoo than with a school. A zoo is typically outdoors, so a builder could easily include or not include specific segments at their own discretion. But with a school, you have the issue of the parts on their own being less useful. After all, you can't easily plunk a single classroom on a city block. It wouldn't look right on its own, since it would probably lack exterior doors or any sort of facade.

Once again a rumour/pictures topic becomes a wish list.....come on we don't want to upset 'Ricecracker' or 'Rick' now do we ? :classic:

On topic once again, here is the great land of Oz it seems the availability of city sets is stuck on elite police and great vehicles plus one fire truck....I wonder what it's in the states or Europe product release wise ? :look:

One thing that I'm not happy with is the sets that Lego have decided to drop from their catalogue. A lot of sets new to last year are discontinued, yet sets from 2010 are still current!!! Annoying

It's not only Lego, but major retail chains.....take Kmart here in Oz.....sets that they have had only six months are on clearance and they still carry the 2011 police station but cleared out the 2012 police station ?

I'm wondering about 2013 if sets will stay for the whole year or only half the year....like 7993 service station did, though it made the odd now and again return for the next year and a half here in Oz ? :look:

Not seen any of the 2013 city sets in Tesco or Toys R Us. In fact very little city sets left on the shelves after christmas, which is the norm.

The shelves are pretty bare in northern Illinois also. We have a couple of large sets left and the great vehicles line plus some small fire and night police sets.

I was as the LEGO store here in Glendale, CA. They had all City sets minus 60008 Museum Break-In. An employee said they sold out fast on those. 60007 High Speed Chase was a big seller too.

Easy guess why 60007 sold well......Chase McCain !

Bought the new fire truck yesterday and I recon its the best fire truck LEGO have ever made. (certainly in the City era anyway)

That was my feeling as well. I love the new ladder piece, it also has a hose and compartments to store tools. It comes with the ribbed hose piece to attach it to the hydrant. Plus the best part - it seats two and looks fairly realistic. Easily the best fire truck ever seen in LEGO Town or City.

Not so sure about the helicopter polybag

The motorcycle & fire chief car seem incredibly overpriced

TLG could have picked a different head, but what do you guys think of the front of the flatbed truck?

I like the front of the dump truck better and I'm really thinking about MODing the flatbed so it looks more like the dump truck.

news form London TOY fair , just confirmation of what had rumors before ......

City

The new City sub-themes for later in the year are coast guard and cargo airport. The coast guard sets are, apparently, slightly <insert that tiresome argument> and aimed at a younger audience. They do appear to comprise mostly large single-use pieces (boat hulls, aircraft cockpits, etc.). The coast guard vehicles in the sets are white and orange with blue accents. The five sets are:

  • 60011, Surfer Rescue, jet ski, 2 figures, shark.
  • 60012, 4 x 4 and diving boat, 2 figures.
  • 60013, Coast Guard Helicopter. This looked like the the most interesting of the five, the helicopter uses a new cockpit piece that, while <insert that tiresome argument>, looks pretty good. The helicopter is rescuing a wind surfer. 2 figures.
  • 60015, Coast Guard Plane, seaplane rescuing fishing boat, 3 figures.
  • 60014, Coast Guard Patrol, the largest set, quite a lot in this one: large floating boat, RIB, rock and lighthouse, small helicopter, sharks.

The cargo airport sets were far more interesting. They are green and white:

  • 60019, Stunt Plane, is actually a bit out of place because it doesn't really go with the rest of the sets in terms of theme or colour. It'll be £10 and features a black/red/white single-prop plane and a small ground support vehicle.
  • 60020, Cargo Truck, £25, is a 'great vehicle': a 6-wheeled truck, an excellent orange fork-lift truck and a couple of pallets. A superb set by the looks of it.
  • 60021, Cargo Heliplane, £25, features the new cockpit piece also used in the coast guard helicopter and has end-of-wing mounted rotors. It looks to be supporting forest logging operations as the set comes with logs and a guy with a chainsaw.
  • 60022, Cargo Terminal, £70, contains an absolutely huge cargo plane, the largest LEGO has made by the looks of things, at least 40-studs long I would estimate. It also contains various ground support vehicles, including a conveyer truck for loading the pallets, and also a control tower.

I sure hope that is a typo. The rescue team should at least be 2 people (1 chopper pilot, 1 rescuer). I'll be intereseted to see how this new helicopter would measure up with the 7738 Coast Guard Helicopter (2008), probably the best LEGO helicopter ever. I'm not encouraged by the new cockpit piece that is (tiresome argument) probably a big, single-use, and highly-specialized/junirorized part, though I'll reserve final judgement when pics come out.

Well, compared to the big elements that include nose and windshield, like used in the Helicopter Rescue from 2012 (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=4429-1), I prefer this windshield. I think this is more in line with a traditional windshield, and the nose can be brickbuilt. I would prefer to use this as a windshield for bigger aircrafts.

You can see the new piece here:

I can't imagine the new one topping 7738, just based on the sheer fact that the new one is "only" rescuing a windsurfer. The old one had a whole lot more going on, and a surfboard is a poor replacement for that fantastic life raft. I still think the chopper itself could be great though, and I don't necessarily mind having a large cockpit piece, especially since this new one looks infinitely better (and accurate) than previous ones. Brick-built would've been nicer, of course.

Anyway, agree that 2 sounds like a typo. 3 minimum, pilot, diver, surfer. Any less than that wouldn't make sense at all.

I like the front end of the dump truck better, too, but I also like that they look like different makes or models. The dump truck looks a little more realistic to me.

Just got back from town, seen the retailers summer catalogue today,

  • 60013, Coast Guard Helicopter. This looked very ulgy, the front cockpit could have been duplo but 60015, Coast Guard Plane, takes the crown for the pig ugliest set of the year in the town range. It is almost a copy of the Police seaplane from a couple of years back.
  • 60020, Cargo Truck, £25, is a beautiful set.
