Rez Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) Appears that the sets will be primarily white with their highlight colors varying. Was never an insectoids fan, so I was holding out hope for the Squad guys. Super dissappointed with the design of the set we can see. Was hoping for a bulkier command ship, and having it be a glorified Snowspeeder with half the thing a wheeled vehicle seems like a waste when the next set appears to be a giant wheeled vehicle. Giant wheeled vehicle(vermin vaporizer, I'm assuming) still looks fairly promising from the super tiny pic... still hopeful that one and the smaller sets catch my eye! Zarkan Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I always thought Insectoids was highly underrated, so I'm glad to see TLC reinvisioning the concept. Of course, as with all themes these days, the aliens/non-humans are just the monsters - though to be fair, outside of a single maze book, I think that was also the case with the Insectoids. Regardless, its good to see the return of space. Quote
Aanchir Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) I always thought Insectoids was highly underrated, so I'm glad to see TLC reinvisioning the concept. Of course, as with all themes these days, the aliens/non-humans are just the monsters - though to be fair, outside of a single maze book, I think that was also the case with the Insectoids. Regardless, its good to see the return of space. The story behind Insectoids was a real mix-up. In the United States, at least, there was very little media depicting them as anything but freaky alien invaders. Certainly that was the story treatment used in LEGO Mania Magazine comics (including the ever-baffling Scooby-Doo crossover). Magazine Cover Story Page 1 Story Page 2 Story Page 3 In several countries (such as Turkey and New Zealand), the story in the catalogs was that the Insectoids were heroic travelers from a planet called either Otopia or Zotax who settled on a planet that was hollow, covered in holes like a giant beehive, and populated by giant insects. They built force fields over the holes to seal the giant bugs in, and created spacecraft disguised as bugs so they could enter the planet's interior without being attacked by the giant insects. Inside the planet were the energy crystals they needed for survival. In the UK catalogs, the Insectoids were not treated positively or negatively, but rather as a powerful nation with a base on the planet Armeron. Commander Webb, Captain Zec, Insector Leon, and Insector 2 used their bug-shaped spacecraft to search the planet for the powerful Voltstones, which were created when lightning struck the planet's surface. It is not clear if this story treatment is meant to overlap with the more common story treatment seen in Turkish and New Zealand catalogs, but it certainly contradicts the US story where Insector 2 is the Insectoid Queen Gypsy Moth. One thing I like about today's story themes is that the story is generally consistent between all the regions in which the set is sold, rather than radically different based on the individual regions' marketing direction. lightningtiger Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 You can't see much in that tiny image, but to me it's a fusion of all the past sci-fi themes all wrapped together especially Mars Mission. Quote
General Magma Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) "Galaxy Squad"... I remember this guy telling us that the human soldiers in this would have different colors rather than just one. What if each color belongs to one squad? I mean, it wouldn't be a squad anymore if you had 5000 troops of each color fending off Insectoids... And what if each squad will have some significant resemblances to older space themes? Ceroknight Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Not a big fan of the orange colour scheme but we'll see... The alien vehicles look awesome though! Quote

Ceroknight Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Well, no worries then, looks like each set has a different color scheme for the squads. Yup, that's why I like this theme Quote
Laura Beinbrech Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Hmmm.... Orange I think that would work for the followers of Tzeentch (need to get more builds done for the bad guys). Anyways, between the awesome aliens and interesting color scheme, I'm very interested in this series. Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 If each unit is a different colour it shouldn't surprise us......Battle Of The Planets had five different colour uniformed heroes and even in CW the clones have different colours on them. Quote
DraikNova Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 (edited) Wow. I love the small land vehicle, it's just so sleek and has a style similar to a lot of Alpha-Team: Mission Deep Freeze sets. The launcher mechanisms and that thing that looks like some sort of evilish orb next to it are also great. The main ship has an interesting four-winged structure and a humongous set of engines, so that's awesome too. The smaller human ship seems like a scouter and is a little difficult to make out, but it seems to me like it will be much-praised when people get the set. The alien ship is great; it has terrifying-looking claws and an overall "wow-factor". Also, there appears to be some sort of giant white globe-like structure in the second-largest set. Si-MOCs Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Looks fun! Some great pieces in some interesting colours - and nice to have some colourful guys that can be like Space Marine squad leaders... or if I get enough, colour coded squads Slightly disappointing it's not Space-Monster-Fighters Quote
DraikNova Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Some people will probably use the monochrome CMF (series 1, I believe?) astronaut as a private or something like that. Quote
Delta 38 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 I personally like the orange, but if every set has a different colour scheme, that's even better. The downside is that some of the figures available only in larger sets would be harder to army-build with. I can't actually see where the multicoloured vehicles thing is coming from. I see a lot of white and the set in the middle appears to have purple figures, but no differently-coloured vehicles. Quote

How can the set "disapoint" you? We only have a super-tiny, super-blurry picture of it, how can it possibly be enough to pass judgement on the theme, much less the set? Let's wait for more pics to follow... Quote

It's not that tiny OR that blurry, and seeing a close up of the thing isn't going to change my mind. And I -wasn't- passing judgement on the entire theme, just the one set, and I specifically said that I was hoping for a bulkier command ship, not a snowspeeder that can land on top of a rover. So all your questions were already answered ;) I even said that the other set looks promising and that I hope the smaller bits look cool as well. Quote
DraikNova Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 I actually think the main ship looks like it is very bulky. More so when it's combined with the other parts. Quote
LegofreakKO345 Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 Thank you CM4S for the picture, it is small but... wait... ADU helmets? In ORANGE? Guys I suddenly have the urge to buy these sets. Does anybody have more pics? I am dying for new pictures. Quote
gerkenz Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 (edited) I just found the decription of the set 70701 at amazon.de: Sorry, German only: "Ein gefährlicher Alien-Moskito rast auf seinem Weltraumflieger heran! It seemed that there is an alien moscito, a blue defence team, Solomon Blaze ( Hero of the blue team? ) and a jet which could be split in 2 parts ( a jet fighter and a defence tower ). Very prommising! :-) edit: the other set descriptions are available, too. ( since August 2012 ?!? ) there is a green team, some more and every team has it's hero/leader. Very cool that we will get new colored space suits! Perfect for my MOC in Skærbæk 2013...hopefully. ;-) thanks LEGO. Edited November 3, 2012 by gerkenz Quote
Laura Beinbrech Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 Some great pieces in some interesting colours - and nice to have some colourful guys that can be like Space Marine squad leaders... or if I get enough, colour coded squads Should be quite possible, what with the Series 1 Spaceman (especially since I've been seeing a TON of Series 1 Spaceman parts in the local LEGO Store's "Build A Minifig" bins), Series 6 Space Girl, Space Police III troopers, Space Villian and ADU troopers, we'll have, at minimum the following colors for futuristic space troopers: White, Pink, Dark Bley, Black, Medium Azure and now Orange.... Alternatively, someone could put black or silver visors in the white, black, pink, medium azure (blue) and orange ones, then we could have the LEGO Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Quote

DraikNova Posted November 3, 2012 Posted November 3, 2012 (edited) I hope we get different Insectoid figs too. And a green (hopefully lime) space suit? Edited November 3, 2012 by DraikNova Quote

I was thinking the same thing. TLG might homage all their past themes within this one. They can keep that orange, though. I like the new figs, but the vehicles we've seen so far are a bit meh, to me at least. Still, the teeny tiny pic of the whole line shows potential with the larger sets. I hope somewhere in the lineup, either the initial, or potential second wave, we get a Galaxy Explorer 2, or something close to it. Quote
