Graysmith Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Ugh, I hope the Mantis "Star Slicer" isn't an exclusive set. I want it but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to get it, which I'd most likely have to (or pay more than I want to pay for it). Anyway, here's how I'd rank them: 1. Space Swarmer — Yes, you read that right! Bigger isn't always better. This is such a perfect little set. Great minifigures, great little spaceship and it'll have a price point that encourages multiple purchases for a whole armada of these little buggers. 2. Warp Stinger — Such a cool bug spaceship, probably my favourite ship of the bunch. Loses a little with those weird legs that are only there so that it can stand up.. I imagine it'll look much nicer if you yank them off, but then of course you can't really keep it standing up. Still, a fantastic-looking set. 3. Star Slicer — Another amazing bug spaceship (or mech might be a better word for it). Looks so much like the real deal. Just amazing what you can do with LEGO. 4. Vermin Vaporizer — It's not a complete slam dunk, but it's close. The mech looks a bit overly simple compared to other recent LEGO mechs, but still a very cool-looking set and I love the green. 5. Bug Obliterator — Far down mainly because it's going to be rather pricey and it's not that great. Or rather, when you split the ship up the separate ship and vehicle look great, but together the larger ship looks kinda crappy and odd. Still, if it were on sale I'd definitely get one. 6. Swarm Interceptor — The only set I'm truly disappointed with. The ship just looks kinda dull and uninspired (especially when there are so many other LEGO spaceships to compare it to, which you can't exactly say about an spaceship that looks like a wasp). Definitely a few steps back from the Viper in 7066 and many of the Star Wars ships as far as the design and look goes. Add to that the fact that it has no exclusive minifigures and it's a pass for me. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Oh, I forgot to mention, I'm surprised no one's mentioned the new technic piece featured in the "feet" of the mosquito and the legs of the Mantis. I think it's a cool new piece. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
Vindicare Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I don't know about the rest of you all, but the secondary vehicles in all of these sets seem like lame afterthoughts. I just don't see there being much of a real fight here(one set by itself, I mean). Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 (edited) I don't know about the rest of you all, but the secondary vehicles in all of these sets seem like lame afterthoughts. I just don't see there being much of a real fight here(one set by itself, I mean). I agree, but I'd say there's one exception to that statement. The dragonfly in the largest set seems pretty fleshed out and not afterthoughty. It's actually one of my favorite ships for the Insectoids, and I think a good bit of thought went into it (at least more than that for the other secondary vehicles.) Also, while its simple design lends credibility to the idea that the buggy in the Mantis set is an afterthought, I wouldn't call it lame. It has a nice look, and while small and simple, looks like it could hold out against the mantis. It has speed and maneuverability without being completely defenseless. I think though, that's just because of the ease of making cars for humans compared to bug-like ships for alien bug people. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited November 28, 2012 by Dannylonglegs Quote
DraikNova Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I, like everyone else apparently, love the Star Slicer now. I might mod the arms a little (I might even add shock-absorbers to give it folding blades), but for the rest it's awesome. The blue vehicle looks lovely too, just like the Swarm Interceptor. What this has highlighted most for me is the Warp Stinger. Apart from the brilliant parts I've mentioned before, the fact that they used an arthropod for the weapon of an arthropod faction is just perfect. I also love the robot's triangular head. Overal, this theme is probably my favorite of winter 2013. Quote
Graysmith Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Also, if someone finds out more about "30230 Galaxy Walker" please post. It's still doubtful if this is a 1st wave set or not. I'm fairly certain that this will be a polybag. The two recent Hobbit polybags are numbered 30212 and 30213. Should be interesting to see what it is.. Maybe a Galaxy Squad version of this Alien Conquest ADU Walker polybag? Quote
DraikNova Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I think the walker was mentioned two pages back. Quote
Algernon Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I find it odd that the red faction doesn't seem to have their own set. Just a few extra figs and parts in the Warp Stinger set. To me that hints heavily of a second wave... Quote
Space Odysseyer Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 I don't recall if the Mantis was confirmed as the exclusive before--though it clearly made the most sense with doubles of the Blue minifigs but 'exclusive' alien--but that Russian price pretty well proves it. YIKES what a price-jump compared to the Bug Obliterator! This price is an obvious mistake, the set should be priced at around 1999 RUR which means the MSRP will be around $40. Quote
Algernon Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 This price is an obvious mistake, the set should be priced at around 1999 RUR which means the MSRP will be around $40. Somewhere between $29.99 and $39.99 sounds about right. Quote
Sid Sidious Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 $30 to $40 seems to be the price Lego likes for exclusives, so if one of these sets is an exclusive, I'd put my money on the mantis. Quote
Deimos321 Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 (edited) Guys, Has anyone else noticed that the story line is a fail? In the below image, it shows the aliens invading Earth. Or what looks like it. file:///D:/settings/Desktop/LEGO/2013/Galaxy%20Squad/Galaxy_Squad_2.jpg But then in the box art it shows the humans fighting the aliens in space and on the moon or another planet. Have I missed something? Or is it a serious flaw? Edited November 29, 2012 by Deimos321 Quote

Have I missed something? Or is it a serious flaw? The comics combine themes into one storyline, and while Lego could hardly be said to have a Canon, the Comics are non-canon. (I am assuming that pic is from the comics because I can't see it.) The last arc had the Aliens from Alien conquest use their head-huggers to control the statue of Poseidon from Atlantis and make an alliance with the evil Pharaoh from Pharaoh Quest to build a statue mech thing. We don't know the exact storyline of this theme, but it seems really straight forward. Unlike with a story-dependent theme like Chima, this one stands on its own with a relatively simple story that could probably take place anywhere--earth or the moon of a planet in another galaxy. ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited November 29, 2012 by Dannylonglegs Quote

Have I missed something? Or is it a serious flaw? That comic probably isn't 100% canon. It's just a crossover that teases the next year's sets. Besides, it's a common sci-fi scenario to stop an alien invasion by making an attack on the alien homeworld or base. Particularly with bug-like foes, an attack on the "hive" is the best way to cripple the "swarm" so that they can't replenish their numbers and keep the invasion going. Quote

Algernon Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Exactly. The theme is clearly meant to take place in outer space, judging by the vehicle designs and minifigure designs as well. The exact storyline isn't very clear at this point, other than the obvious alien invasion premise. Besides, the two locations aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. This is about Galaxy Squad, a team of specialists who are taking the fight to the aliens. Perhaps the main invasion is on Earth, but the Squaddies are bringing the fight to space? Quote
Jargo Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Except that didn't work out too well on Klendathu. To fight the bug, we must understand the bug. We can ill afford another Klendathu. Quote
