vexorian Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Most of the insectoids' new molds weren't that good anyway. Quote
Aanchir Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Is it bright green on the Vermin Vaporizor? It looks different in various pics so i'm not getting a handle on which green it actually is. I hope it isn't bright green as that's just so garish. Regular green is much better but I suppose Lego will probably replace regular green with bright green eventually. What makes you think Bright Green will replace anything? After it's been around for over two decades I think we're definitely past the threshold in which it qualifies as a threat to existing colors. Personally, I love bright green and am glad to see it's finally getting the respect it deserves in set design after years of use primarily for plants and baseplates. It's certainly no more garish to me than Bright Red, Bright Orange, or Bright Yellow. Of course, this set doesn't have too much of it anyway compared to the Green Lantern Constraction set or the Garbage Truck. Quote
vynsane Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) The "golden ratio" of $0.10/piece is also just a basic standard we, the outside community, have in our heads. TLG apparently has an internal price sheet that set designers have to adhere to when developing a new set, so some pieces 'cost' more to use in a set than others. Mark Stafford (Nabii) made reference to this part of the process when he posted a pic of his Raid-VPR a few years back. Perhaps the pieces used in the GS sets just cost a bit more than others, in terms of the budget of the set design. Edited November 30, 2012 by vynsane Quote

Perhaps the pieces used in the GS sets just cost a bit more than others, in terms of the budget of the set design. Very interesting, and that indeed makes a lot of sense. The Dino line from earlier this year is a good example - there was a very low price/piece ratio due to the expensive Dino models included in each set. I think the designers did a good job of making the sets feel substantial anyway. The $0.10/piece is probably just a generalized ratio that most sets happen to share based on LEGO's pricing model. Obviously gigantic canopies, printed parts, and unique minifigures are all going to cost more than that. Not a big deal to me anyway, they're priced fairly enough and I love them! Worth every penny IMO Quote
Graysmith Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 By the way, isn't it odd that there's not even a teaser site for this theme? It's available on (some) stores, up on LEGO S@H, yet no site. Can't say I keep up that much with the official LEGO microsites, but isn't the norm to have something up before a theme goes on sale? Quote

I get the sense that releasing these sets so early was a last-minute decision on LEGO's part - I suppose they wanted to capitalize on the holiday season. Quote
DraikNova Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Probably a decision the stores themselves made, not LEGO. Quote

ETAV8R Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 (edited) I stopped by a local Lego store to see if the GS were on the shelves and they were. Very cool sets. I wish the little buggy from the Vaporizer set had rubber tires though. Seems cheap without them. I picked up the Space Swarmer but will wait for them to show up at Target. Still have quite a few 2012 sets to pick up. Lego also had some of the new city, technique, and creator sets. The new police figs are cool as is the packaging. Now I don't usually army build but I do understand wanting a few more figs to wage combat. They really need more bugs and some of those purple capsules so the insects can capture all the squads who try to get them. Edited December 1, 2012 by ETAV8R Quote
PenPlays Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I just picked up the Swarm Interceptor. I'll have my opinion up later tonight. Quote
M'Kyuun Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I'm resisting the urge to go looking for these, as I've asked for the Interceptor and the Swarmer for Christmas. If I see them myself, chances are high I'd be bringing one, if not both, home with me, esp at their low price points. However, this early in the release, TRU is probably the only store carrying it , and I tend not to buy much LEGO there due to the markups, which get pretty steep on the larger sets. I usually don't follow storylines on LEGO themes, but I was reading the descriptions last night, and noticed that the insectoids' motivation is to collect the humans' robots. Just thought I'd mention it. I just picked up the Swarm Interceptor. I'll have my opinion up later tonight. I'm looking forward to it. Quote
PenPlays Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 I forgot to mention that I saw the Bug obliterator on display at the Lego Store. It's much, much bigger than I thought it would be . Also all the GS boxes are of a new reduced size . The $29 sets are now inside $19 size boxes. Both the Obliterator and the Vermin Vaporizer were in the exact same shaped box (Hobbit Bag End set is the same size as well) even though they have different price points. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. From the get go, the box for the Swarm Interceptor looks too small for $20. You however can't rattle the contents very well. Very quiet Lego clinks when it shakes (I loved that sound ) Quote
DraikNova Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 It´s really annoying I´ll have to wait for three weeks to get my hands on these. Has anyone ever heard the reason the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg) get LEGO about three months later than other countries? Quote
just2good Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Got the Warp Stinger set! It's surprisingly great! Here's my video review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIzrK6C0hZk Quote
Masked Builder Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I'm considering pick that set up mostly for the pod. Other than that it's really not all that cool for me. I suppose I'll keep thinking about it. Quote
Vindicare Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 TRU here in Santa Rosa California has 3 of them. 70700 Space Swarmer, 70704, Vermin Vaporizer & 70705 Bug Obliterator. I was upset to see even these were marked up...I thought they only price gouged Licensed sets. Well, I'll take full advantage of their price match guarantee(if they'll honor it) or start shopping elsewhere. I need a Brand Store closer to me(like so many others) Quote

Why do all the Toys"R"Us locations have only these three? Oh, I reviewed the Space Swarmer set: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSPHNqjWWfA And I changed my profile picture to the Twitch family portrait! Oh, and for those wanting a comparison: Quote
Algernon Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I am unreasonably jealous of you all. I must wait until Christmas unfortunately. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 (edited) just2good, you are just too good! thanks for the two reviews! Got the Warp Stinger set! It's surprisingly great! Here's my video review: *Pow* It doesn't balance on the legs? What's the point of only having two of them? *grumble grumble* Actually, it looks much nicer in the video, reminding me that it is in fact Lego and not some poorly designed clone. I actually admire some of the techniques and allot of the new technic pieces. It reminds me of the good old days. Don't get me wrong, I'm still not getting this set probably, but it's not too bad considering all. I like how you mentioned the wheel pieces were indeed not double sided studs. Your review also makes me like the mosquito figure allot more too. You managed in one scene to capture a particularly menacing and not-too-goofy angle. Still though, I'll have to agree to disagree with you on the best minifigure ever, as that title truly belongs to Queen Gypsy Moth... Space-God save the Queen. I do have a question; what is the second piece in the Insectoid's gun? 1. Scorpion, 2. ?, 3. trans-Magenta disk. As for the Beetle-Pod, I love it. While I usually like more streamlined craft, this one is quite alright the way it is... And that Minifigure is just.... ~Insectoid Aristocrat Edited December 1, 2012 by Dannylonglegs Quote
PenPlays Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 (edited) Well, there may be a review about the Swarm Interceptor, but let me just say that, being that this is the largest less-than-$40 set that focuses on the Squaddies, it does not disappoint! When it separates, it is a small pod and a turret with a large stick poking out at the front. Glad I chose this guy first for the Squaddies. I will hopefully pick up the Space Swarmer sometime before the LoC and Ninjago sets realease... maybe. Bottom line. If this is a one wave and done series, it will be the first since Aqua Raiders that I will collect completely. Edited December 1, 2012 by Penkid11 Quote
Capt. Redblade Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 It might just be me, but when I first saw this guy's face, my only thought was "It's a trap!" Quote
DraikNova Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 Wow. I love the Warp Stinger's tail, but I'm going to have to do some major modding on the head. Quote

Hrw-Amen Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 So looking ata lot of these sets, the aliens vehicles do not seem to be actual ships to me. They appear much more like walkers, like insects would be. Is that the impression the rest of you have or do you imagine them flying through space? Quote

Generally, I agree, although the Dragonfly that comes with the Bug Obliterator and the Space Swarmer are both clearly spacefairing vehicles. Quote
