A few questions, actually, more like a request.

For Challenge five can the maximum be bumped up to 64x64 - I don't ask because I want more space, but because it makes it a bit easier for us that prefer to start with base plates rather than brick-built bases. Putting together 4 32x32s is much easier as they are more readily available than smaller size plates. They are usually cheaper too.

Also, the more I think about it, we may need the extra room. Refuge camps are usually sprawling, and to include more than a couple of those features and an impressive ancient structure, I just feel like this challenge screams "big." But really, the reason I ask for the extension is for convenience when laying down the foundations.

On another note - this challenge is really interesting, if you had told me yesterday I would build a Lego refugee camp by November, I would have laughed. Very interesting idea. Now to finish the 5th guild challenge so I can move on to this task.

1 : I believe that this format is set so that builders like Zcerberus (or whatever he is called at the moment) who build borders don't have to restrain their building space to 44 x 44 or something like that, + the minimum is 36 x 36, so you could easily do a 48 x 48 build.

2 : This challenge is fairly demanding and does scream "big", but you can fit a ton on a 48 x 48 baseplate, just look at waterdeep as an example

I personally think this challenge is set up perfectly and I hope to see what people make of it.

have all the other challenges been 2 months? I always start my entry in the last week default_laugh_new.gif

Although you're right that a bigger layout gives you more flexibility and space to work, we are trying to move away from "Big" MOC's. The entrees will not be judged by size or grandeur but by creativity and aesthetic and how well they fit the criteria. I assure you that a great 32X32 design will be much better than an OK 64X64. There are enough sites out there where people rank creations by size alone, but we don't share in that policy.

Another thing to note is that you don't have to build an entire camp, (You'd need a MOC the size of a dining room table for that)you should build just part of one. Think of it as a random sample of life in the camp and surrounding area.

Also, the build does NOT NEED to be square. You can modify 52 x 52 so that it is still at or under 2704 stud area by making the build 32 x 82 or whatever. That may solve some of your crisis!

I don't get this:

7) A location belonging to the original structure to add to the lore. (Ex. Within a mine, perhaps a mining gallery, or within a mystic forest an area of flowers/animals.

That means a place within the camp that is thematic to the mystic location you pick. If you want your camp in a dwarven mine, perhaps this can be a dwarven throne room. If your camp is in a mystic forest this location can be reserved for a magical pond, or a mystical tree that bears strange fruit etc.

It's merely a suggestion, you don't "HAVE TO" include any of the items in that list.

I assume you meant does not need to be square. I never thought of it that way, as in that you could go longer while thinning out the width -- which may change things up a little for me for what I was planning.

As I said above, I really was not asking so I could make something bigger, I was asking because it made it easier for people that already have the more readily available 32x32 plates and not the small baseplates. It was coming from a spending perspective, not a lazy perspective. 54 x 54 is such a weird number as I cannot think of what you would stick together to get 54 studs, other than a brick built base (which more power to you if you have the means to do so; and, borders really never really impressed me, so I don't do them myself).

I also agree that bigger is not always better, I was just saying that this challenge seems "big."

Stupid phone. Does NOT need to be square...

Nonsquare is all the rage.

Ofcourse, blame the phone

I'm actually a big fan of square!

To square or not to square?

Back on topic, I am glad this 5th challenge it will be running until November, that way there is more time to organize for building.

Since we're talking about borders, do the borders count in measuring the size? And, not that I think I'll have any at this size, being a vignette builder, but to be thorough, what about overhang?

:rofl::laugh::rofl:

I'm glad about the deadline as well, I've got several MOC's "almost" compleated that I'd like to finish first.

I thought we might be going smaller for this challenge, but the size hasn't changed just the sheer amount you want us to fit in!!!!

Border is certainly "reasonable overhang" so long as it is only a couple plates thick. Just be "reasonable" and you'll be fine.

I'll just be using my normal dark bley border with the rounded corners, so that should be fine, then. :classic:

I have used varitions of that border many times. It is TOTALLY fine.

I seem to remember that some people had multiple entries for Challenge 1. Is that acceptable for Challenge 5? I have two ideas and I would like to build them both (I probably will only have time for one, but who knows.)

Yes, I submitted three entries for Challenge 1. (Those were the days! Where did I find the time to build all those?) I think unless otherwise stated, multiple entries are acceptable. Unfortunately, they will not add up the scores of each one and declare you the top builder in the guild!
