JayLogan Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 I built this model about six months ago and it took me about three days to build this using LDD. Back then I wasn't really interested in sharing it, but since I just joined the forum I decided to post it here for everybody to see and to see if anybody likes it. During the build I didn't use any advanced techniques because I don't know any (or maybe I do I just don't know it). The whole model started out as a little experiment with hinge plates as I was playing around with different angles. Then i decided to build a small scale test model of the city (somewhere between midi and mini scale) just to see if the basics design elements of the city would work. Then as the hours passed the model became considerably larger as I wanted to get more details right thus eventually reaching the current size. At the moment it has 2340 pieces and by my count the whole thing is 60.8 cm x 54.4 cm (give or take about 2 cm-s). The weight is unknown, that one one will only be clear after I can build this in real life (which won't be soon). Right now I list this as a v1.0 because it still need some work. The work it still needs by my count: -the bottom needs some plating work especially in the middle -implementation of the city's stardrive on the bottom -and maybe some retouching of the buildings. The first two a pretty self explanatory (if you know the show or seen a picture of the city from below if not then here's a picture of it) the buildings might require some explanation. I did the buildings last, after the base structure was done. There are a lot repetition in the buildings (especially in the small ones at the end of piers, those were made by the cloning of some templates I made on the first pier I've done, although I used different patterns for each pier) and that I want to change up a little bit, mostly in the city central. Another thing I might change a bit about the buildings is the large amount of yellow trans pieces. They are supposed to represent turned on lights all over the city after sundown and I thinks they look good, but I also think I may have used a bit too much, so I'll definitely look into it. As soon as I'm done with the revisions and I deem it to be a final version I will try to build it and when that happens I will post it here along with the updates on the general design. After all my text, here are some pictures and the rest can be seen on my flickr here. The overall look of the model from an upward angle. The same from downward. View of the city from above. And under. A close up of the two pier types I used and the city central from above. A close up of the middle of the city and the central tower. Close up of pier type 1. Close up from pier type 2. As I said there a a few other pictures on my flickr about the city (I took 14 total to start with). I really hope you guys are going to like this and hope you have some thoughts to share on the model. Quote
TheLegoNinja Posted September 30, 2012 Posted September 30, 2012 Epic MOC!!!! I cant wait to see this in real life. things are always better in the brick, unless they arent ! Are the hollow piers some kind of turbine generator? Quote
JayLogan Posted September 30, 2012 Author Posted September 30, 2012 Epic MOC!!!! I cant wait to see this in real life. things are always better in the brick, unless they arent ! Are the hollow piers some kind of turbine generator? I'm glad you like it :). As far as I know it's not a turbine, since Atlantis isn't supposed to have any other power sources other than the ZPM, the naquadah generators the expedition team brought along or the usage of the lightning in the half season double episode in season 1. What I was trying to recreate is a narrow (in the scale of the city itself) path on the middle of the pier with water on both sides (reference at the end of the comment). I'll probably try to replace it with maybe simple 1xn plates, as this was kind of a knee jerk reaction in that little path :D .Plus as I just realized it today, the pier isn't supposed to be hollow, but only have a large "hole" for water to flow in. The underside is solid. What led me to believe it was hollow was the fact, that all piers have water containing pools, rather large ones on these piers. The other thing was the not 100% clear CGI of the stardrive engines (seen on the reference pic of the original post). The CGI paints the active engines in shades of blue, which in my opinion are rather similar, to water effects, so I wrongly assumed, that these piers would be hollow. This is one of the things I intend to fix in the next version. IF I'M right this will look really awesome in brick, I really hope I'll be able to build it IRL in a few months. The reference for the pier as I promised Quote
soccerkid6 Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Looks just like your reference pic You captured the angles very well and the micro scale towers look great Quote
JayLogan Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Looks just like your reference pic You captured the angles very well and the micro scale towers look great Thanks a lot :) The reason the whole thing got this big because I wanted to get the general outlines of the piers right and I couldn't do that on a smaller scale (if you take a closer look you'll see that I used 1x3, 1x4 angled bricks to get the shape). DraikNova Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 (edited) I actually like the buildings. Good job. Edited October 1, 2012 by DraikNova Quote
Wedge09 Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Very good work, I like the building style  Quote

zero1312 Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Although I'm not a big fan of SGA, I must admid that you did a marvelous job at this construction. Are you going to build it with real bricks? Quote
JayLogan Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Although I'm not a big fan of SGA, I must admid that you did a marvelous job at this construction. Are you going to build it with real bricks? Thanks :) I plan to build it with real bricks as soon as I reach the final version which is probably 2.0, 3.0 tops. Unfortunately I won't be able to build this in real life for at least a few moths, because, well, I don't have the money yet to buy the parts, but in a few months I probably will. The other issue why I'm putting off the real life versions is the listed reasons above, where the model still needs some improvement, plus I forgot to list the fact, that I probably still need to work a bit on the piers' connection to the central base. See, the majority of the model's weight is in the pier's and I'm always a bit afraid that when I try to pick it up in real life the pressure will be to much on the bricks connecting the individual piers to the triangular base and it will break apart. So I'm actually still changing some connectors to longer plates/bricks with overlapping connections for better weight distribution. Quote
