xenologer Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Im really loving the 'organic' look to the alien ships. Much Much better than the LoM or UFO style stuff. Would be nice to see an alien fig up close though... looks like they are able to use those old LoM stlye sled/gurney things, which maybe a bad sign as to their posability... I guess if it turns out the aliens suck I can just use my Exo-Force drones.... they aren't having much fun in the EF story anyway... The humans stuff looks decent, my main complaint is the smaller sets have cockpits that arent airtight... All the white slopes are a welcome addition to my collection... and I'm Especially loving the old style Space wheels in Orange. Hey Check it out! a Jedi Starfighter windshield, without the ugly jedi decal on it; now you can Actually Use that part for something else! Not sure what those odd cylinder things are... you can see them on the human dropship and mecha/tank Looks like they might be able to hold a minifig or LoM sled thing... Maybe part of the storyline is humans kidnapping aliens for the spacefuel contained in their oversized craniums? (see who's tied to the back of the rover in the alien jet set) be nice to see aliens be the good guys for once.... The air pump stuff sucks though... im skipping anything that uses those... Quote
oo7 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Those space sets looks horrible. But that can't mean much since that's the way ALL space sets look to me. 8-| Why are these sets so different (worse) than other previous ones? Futuristic ships are futuristic ships, it's all the same to me. Quote
birdie100 Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Hmm... just casting my eyes over those sets. I'm personally thinking uh-oh. However, if I look at the demographic of the people who I serve in the Pick a Brick shop in the summer, I'm fairly convinced I'll be able to shift plenty of those smaller space sets. They look really good fun! As a child, whilst mainly owning city and train sets, I would often end up with the smallest spacecraft models simply because they were the pocket money sets. In terms of getting people into Lego Space (particularly important since Star Wars can only last a certain amount of time before new children grow up without the awareness of a film...) those small sets look really new and inventive. I can understand the disappointment to those of you who can build vast moonbases etc., and I must confess I see the similarities to Life on Mars. But these Mars Mission sets are certainly a good way of the Lego designers warming up and getting used to having non Star Wars space products. For a first attempt (remember many of these designers were not at Lego pre-Star Wars) it's a very good tentative step. And, with the success of Exo-Force, I hope this range is successful. Us older collectors may be rolling our eyes in horror - but I think we'd have all been more impressed if we hadn't seen such brilliant new City and Creator sets... Quote
KimT Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 One word: DISAPPOINTED :-X *n* When someone said it would be kinda like Life On Mars, I thought "Okie, how much like can they do this?" Apparently A LOT |-/ They even "re-invented" the mars/alien lauch/shuttle/base thingy... Not much else to say... Maybe...just maybe it'll be better when the sets are actually released and being held in my hands for closer inspection...I doubt it, but just maybe... :'-( :'-( KimT Quote
CopMike Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 kim - the last thing to leave the human is hope ........ ;-) Quote
dunamis Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I'm mixed until I see more photos. The truck looks awesome, but everything else looks marginal at this point. LoM is the first thing that pops into my head. Looks like this is the first line of 2007 that has not been met with wild enthusiasm. I agree with the poster above who said the ship looks like the dropship from Aliens. Quote
Zarkan Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 These sets are, in my opinion, much better than LoM, and a step in the right direction That's exactly what comes to mind when I look over these pictures (and possibly the best response to the pictures overall, IMO). True, they are not clasic space for SURE, nor do they scream "BUY ME" as much as the new Castle, City, or Starwars, but in the end they look okay. The alien craft? Pft, they are really cruddy, but some of the human vehicles such as the Armored Drilling Unit and that plane like craft (2nd image) look very nice. The base is also bad, but the shuttle included is pretty good, the trike basic but the small craft good. Basicly, a totally mixed bag. But remember everyone, that these very well could be prototypes, so we can't give our final judgement just yet. Every line deserves a chance (every SYSTEM line. Jack stone is not one), and especially with this one, we need to keep our hopes up for the final pictures. ;-) Quote
KimT Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Is this too much to ask for? How hard can it be? KimT Quote
xenologer Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I agree with the poster above who said the ship looks like the dropship from Aliens. Looks more like a Halo Pelican to me... the Dropship had no wings and massive tailfins... Not sure why everyone's hating these sets so much... Like I said earlier... they look good, better than anything we've been offered in Space since Exploriens went dead.(I don't count SW as part of Space, but if you do -then yes better than SW too :-P ) Lets put it this way, its Exo-Force, without the stupid Eraser-haired minifigs. And without the story. Thats a good thing. EDIT oh alright, one thing that does dissapoint me majorly... is that the wheels on the drilling truck are mounted on bionicle legs with ball joints. This clearly means, no Working suspension system, and no steering mechanism... Quote
Vader Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Looks more like a Halo Pelican to me...the Dropship had no wings and massive tailfins... I actually said it reminds me of the ship in aliens ;-) Oh and KimT i guess thats a yes from Lego :-/ Quote
Darkness Falls Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Life on Mars all over again, except this time, the Humans have come to destroy Martian Life. WHOO! Great vehicles, though I can't get a clear shot of those martians. Colossal vehicles, though. Who knows? Maybe, in the end, instead of obliterating each other, they'll learn to get along. ...Maybe. Quote
PSPguy Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Why doesnt TLC call the theme what it realy is; "Life on Mars 2:Reborn" :-| Quote
spotfrog Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Some interesting new stuff, but the rest is... blah... just skimpy redesigns of LoMI. I can attest that the original tripod rover was far cooler. And why have Lego designs become so bare all of the sudden, it's like they're compromising weight and sturdiness for overall size. I'd much rather they cut down on the over-<insert that tiresome argument> gimmicks. :-/ Quote
ApophisV Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I am COMPLETELY disappointed. *n* Seems we are getting back to the Alpha Team junk spirit... *n* *n* *n* :'-( Quote
dunamis Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Is it just me, or are we seeing a modified saucer secion in a few of these sets? There are definite round sections that don't look the the typical round saucer parts found in the old Space sets: It is on the wings of this set: Or, is this part found elsewhere and I just don't know it? Capn Kirk 911 Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 (edited) anyone notice a copy of the tube idea between the first life on mars set and new new one....anyone I really like 7682 the flying craft looked nice! :-D ;-) oh...and the mining car looks preety cool! BearHeart Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 The Armoured Drilling Unit is pretty awesome. I'm not so sure about the others. That was my very first thought as well. The ADU looks good but Im gonna have to get a better look at the other sets to make a better judgement. The color scheme looks interesting. Quote
Lost Viking Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Wow, Mars Mission brings the Suck! :-X Quote
johnsocal Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 If a LEGO Space set doesnt include this then it really can't be considered Space. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 Three thoughts: 1) I thought the last collection of Mars Mission sets (if that is the name) was a bomb. Why on Mars, would they try it again? 2) One would think that Lego space fans would want classic space. I agree with Johnsocal 100%. AFOL theme all the way! 3) I suppose that after seeing the 2007 themes, there has to be one that's bad. It's definately Mars Mission. Quote

Just as LEGO dumped Knights Kingdom and went to just calling those new themed sets "Castle", I had high hopes of the new space theme just being called "SPACE" with the appropriate logo. I was really hoping to have some cool moon-base like sets to build with my kids to offer a real alternative to SW's space war theme. Don't get me wrong, Im all for space wars, but SW's just does it a whole lot better. Now my kids will never learn the concepts of peaceful space exploration and it will all be LEGOs fault ;) Quote
SpartanML Posted January 5, 2007 Posted January 5, 2007 I kinda look at this as the next phase in the Life on Mars timeline... we arrive... dont like the locals... leave and come back with what we do best.... The sets are very lame.... I like the beast drill tank but that's about it. I always have a place in my heart for the LOM sets.... the mechs they created where very unique and cool for the time... I loved those sets immensley when they came out... If the new sets were more along those lines I sure as heck would be alot more content.... but like Lego they fudged what to me was an OK series with this continuem... the 3 wheeler for instance.... is perhaps the most obvious rehash from LOM... a clearly poorly made rehash at that... with much cheaper design and a$$ ugly wheels.... Bottom line is I too would much rather prefer Classic Space or even a Pre Classic Space theme... what a shame Lego fudged such a good concept yet again with dumb Exo-force type knockoff on mars.
