A quick shrug of surprise danced across Sylph's concealed figure. A feral growl rumbled from withing his cold-iron helmet, the noise of a wary wolf regarding a threatening stranger, the sound of a bear meeting a challenge. The Druid huffed as an elk would huff hot air from its nostrils, or as a wounded wolverine would in defiance.

He chuckled, the hollow sound reverberating in his metal mask. "You disappoint me, Regret..." He started slowly in a voice as capricious and jumpy as a cornered fox. "You wish to wound me with such a hollow insult? Your blasphemy falls short. To love a god; to devote oneself to a thing of infinite emotion, feeling, Knowledge, and power; to follow the spoken and unspoken wishes of the very earth; to gratify even the darkest desires of all her creation... That is the noblest calling; my own calling. I serve my Goddess faithfully, and faith is rewarded--not by your silly conceptions of "bedding Sylvania," but by much greater still. You can seek to offend all you like, but I don't believe that you, in all your 'knowledge,' can still even comprehend love. You've buried yourself too deeply into its antithesis." The Druid sighed, turned to his men, and called out his orders.

Perfect Regret gives a chuckle.

"Alas, poor druid, you underestimate me. Do you think my powers of perception are only skin-deep? Do you think the master of death hasn't picked up a few ways to peer deeper into somebody?Outward appearance to me is meaningless - so easily altered, so easily changed. However, a soul is a soul. When tainted, you simply can't undo the blemish. When twisted, it doesn't repair itself. You can hide your face behind a mask... you can hide behind your party... but you cannot hide your soul. The words you speak are so hollow in comparison to what they are coming of of Druid, truly. You say that I do not understand love? Perhaps I don't. Prometheus did, but unfortunately that poor soul is long gone. But you... you do not understand love, companionship, friendship, loyalty. You don't want to. Your story is the exact same as mine, Sylph Solanum! You walk down the same road as I... My story is yours, you're just a few chapters behind. You try to purge yourself of hatred, Druid. Denial. You will begin to see the world as it truly is, and reject it. Anger. You will try your hardest to simply make the best of this pitiful realm, beg for a new beginning... and fail. Bargaining. You'll enter a state of dark catharsis, unable to choose what to do. Depression. And there is no Acceptance, Druid. There is none down the path you walk - only Hatred. Unending Hatred and Regret; what you once tried so hard to avoid you become. One day, Sylph Solanum, you'll be in this exact same predicament once more... just switch the positions. Loneliness, hatred, despair, sorrow, regret... all the embodiments of the path you walk. Embrace it, and save yourself thousands of years of folly.

We're kindred spirits, Sylph. There is no denying it. Lie, druid. Lie like you always have, and always will, until you become brave enough to master the darkness in your heart."

QM Note: Doctor's appointment this afternoon, so I'll run a round tonight. :look: Also, on Wednesday, I am getting a wisdom tooth pulled. I'll be out of commission for the later part of that day, methinks, so I apologize... The rest of that week I have off, though, so we'll move fast.

Sylph's snarky air seemed to consume itself around the verbally assaulted Druid. He took a brief step back. When was the last time someone peered into his soul and saw his spirit? And the things the abomination spoke... How far had the thing actually looked, and what was it simply garnering from the none-too-subtle threats the Druid had leaked to his foe in his arrogance. Damn!

"You're wrong." Sylph finally stated, grim determination defining his every syllable. "You're wrong to think that we are the same, abomination. In fact, we are opposites. What you do out of hate, I do out of love. And you're wrong to think I know so little of loyalty and friendship too. I am nothing if not loyal to my goddess, and my men are loyal to me until we defeat you, as am I loyal to the Heroica organization..." What was the point of arguing with the Regret? Did it matter in the long term? Possibly now. The stakes were higher now. He'd dug through the protection and glanced at Sylph's most hidden feature... A feature that Sylph did not wish to expose quite yet. Hiding behind words in battle with a monster seemed futile, but still, the charade had to go on a little longer... Yet a little longer. If not for the Regret, then for the party. And the Regret had misread his motivation too. Perhaps the word game could continue still longer.

"You think I can't see the world for what it is? I am a thing of this world, just as you are one of another. I know this worlds crevasses and climbs like I know my path. Your words cannot divert me. I know my course. I don't regret an action I've made or a thought I've conceived, for every stumble or doubt has simply strengthened my resolve to follow the right path. After all these years... I regret nothing. And I shall never regret anything. I shall not descend into darkness even in the darkest times, for my goal is the unfaltering light guiding my stride." Sylph spoke truthfully, or at least as truthfully as he dared to speak.

Galen was growing worried. The discussion between Sylph and The Regret didn't sit well with him, even though he couldn't understand most of it. He had never asked Sylph about his past, as it was the kind of conversation one would start around a campfire, mug in hand -- and so far they never had a chance to rest and reflect. But what was Sylph, and how old was his soul? Could he really become angry and hateful over time? Or was The Regret only trying to mess with their minds?

"You're not going to make any friends today, Regret, so stop trying."

"Don't worry Galen, I could never fall to his level." Stated Sylph in response to Galen's worried comment. "And I shall never be his friend. It is my crusade to rid this world of abominations such as this ether-made half-souled monster."

Perfect Regret merely chuckles, gnashing his razor-sharp teeth as he does so. He speaks in a wry tone, amused by the party:

iXjNLbw.png

"Say what you will, Sylph. At this point, I am simply left wondering how MAGNIFICENT the explosion will be when I end your existence, Druid..."

The battle continues. The ethereal puppetstring becomes thin, trying its hardest to ensnare two minds at once. The puppetstring's iron vice begins to slip as it manipulates the pair of heroes, nearly destroyed by the party. The round goes rather well until Romulus rushes Perfect Regret's claw. With a sinister cackle, the abominable Progg employs some powerful magic. Tendrils of darkness erupt from a gap in the Progg's shoulder blades, rushing up the beast's arm. They meet at the palm, rapidly coiling into a massive spike of darkness shooting out of the beast's hand. With a floruishing movement Perfect Regret mows down the entire party, Elgar knocked out cold by the ruthless assault. The pestilent spike manages to even poison a few heroes before retracting back into Perfect Regret's hand. Wounded, Galen is able to finish off the string. His wrench fles through the air, clipping the puppetstring in two. The heroes shake their heads rapdily, snapped out of their trance.

The battle rages on!

the abomination before them gives a mniacal cackle. The party is still in awe over the beast's immense power, Perfect Regret the most powerful foe they have faced thus far. Sylph mend;s the party's wounds, Romulus rushing up to Elgar's side, reivivng the Evoker. He staggers upwards, and prepares a spell... but he is discombobulated, groggy from his knockout. Perfect Regret spies the opening he needs, and slashes through the entire party. Hal tumbles backwards, unable to take the gargantuan blow. The round goes no smoother afterwards - they deal some damage, but Hal's absence leaves Rhodus unoccupied. With a snarl the fallen Prin ce pounces on Sylph, crushing the druid with a devestating blow from his tail. Alex's guardian angel arrives at the last possible moment, watching from above in silent dismay as Aquos withers away due to the poison coursing through his system.

The battle rages on!

"Elgar, now might be a good time to use your phoenix incense, then we show that clown what we are capable of."

iXjNLbw.png

"Oh, you've demonstrated the extent of your capabilities more then I could ever need. Your skills seem to compose entirely of flailing, snarking, then dying, in that order."

"I agree, and he goes first in battle order, so everyone gets full health."

"Only the fallen will get full health though. Incense won't do the rest of us any good." :look:

"I think 'you've Lost' is a tad bit presumptuous, Regret, don't you?" queried Sylph calmly as he stood up after Elgar used his incense. "And, Galen, that's what I'm here for." stated sylph slyly, none the worse for just having been unconscious. "I'm afraid, Regret, that the only tactical advantage you gained that round was removing my luck. Fortunately, Your wise nephew is capable of duplicating those effects... And I was planning on having him do so soon regardless. Also, I'd like to thank you for removing the poison from his system, it would have been annoying to have to do that myself. Now, men, it'd be simply lovely if we could get one of these enemies off our backs. Everyone on the calamity claw. I know it may not seem as direct as piling onto the behemoth himself, but it'll free us up later if we can get rid of him now. He's the closest to dead, and I'm going to want to keep us all as lucky as possible, which may mean sacrificing the sleep hold we have over the two we haven't been targeting."

Alex's Guardian Angel hovers over the party, their unconscious bodies scattered across the rain-soaked rooftop. Once a radiant, it was now nowhere near as glorious as it once was. From its constant beating at the hands of the Proggs, it looked weary... defeated. A glowing white silhouette, cracks ran up and down the luminous figure. From those wounds a bright light shone out, a beacon of blinding light coming out from the giant gash in its chest - presumably from The Regret's blade. Elgar lifts his Phoenix Incense aloft, a fountain of flame spewin out form the battle. The inferno envelops the party, awaking the senses and startling the knocked out heroes into consciousness. The Phantom Aquos beats his tentacles on the rooftop, mixing in a solid percussion with some good woodwind. The satisfying result invigorates the heroes, allowing them to go ballistic on Perfect Regret, he tries to evade, but Lady Luck is blessing the party - they decimate the Calamaity Claw, Romulus dodging a punch from it and actually jumping on top! He runs down its forearm and goes right for the shoulder, lodging Combrys in the beast's shoulder blade. For the first time Perfect Regret gives a grunt of pain as the sword buries into him. Being a being of pure ether, he wouldn't simply die... No, his exit would be more volatile. The entire arm glows a ghastly purple color, tendrils of magic going out of control as they are released into the air. In a burst of black light the arm is blown clear off, flying right off of its socket. Romulus jumps off just in time, avoiding the consequences of the dark explosion. Black blood oozes of Perfect Regret's now exposed side, a pulsating mass of organs being revealed... but the Perfect Regret was as eldritch as his appearance would suggest. New armor seems to simply grow from the abomination's body, its horrid teeth gnashing in glee as it repaired itself. Bones locked together and fused, sealing off the exposed organs... With a demonic cackle Perfect Regret raises his tail into the air, the entire appendage hissing as its various barbs and spikes shifted and shuffled around. It hums with power... but instead of lunging for the party, it goes right for the wounded angel. The divine being is too weak to evade, the tail snatching its prey and capturing it in an iron vice. The Progg chuckles as he tightens his grip on the angel, the holy creature letting out a chilling shriek as it went through the monster's sadistic torture. With all of the screams squeeze out of the angel, Perfect Regret gives a mocking sigh... and allows a gargantuan beam of darkness to erupt from his tail. The devastating beam pierces right through the angel, sending the guardian colliding into the stone floor - and shattering upon impact! The angel breaks into hundreds of shards of light, the fragments hanging in the air for a few moments before being completely blotted out by the darkness... The newly revived party stands, mouth agape, as they watch what may have been the angel's demise.

With the Guardian Angel dispelled, or perhaps even destroyed, Perfect Regret launches into another mocking tirade. He seemed none too concerned with his amputated arm, his awareness heightened and his tactical actions improved from the event!

iXjNLbw.png

"A guardian angel is only as strong as the faith of the one who summons it. What a sad, pathetic creature you dragged into our world, Paladin! Heh heh heh... do you truly believe, holy man? Have you grown disillusioned with Ennoc? Or has Ennoc grown disillusioned with you?"

The battle rages on!

"So it's the sceptre Regret is worried about now. It's very well defended, but there's more than one way to skin a cat. If we take out his other claw he will have a hard time trying to hold that sceptre straight!"

"Regret. As I imagine you know, three heroes have wielded this blade. First was Daxus. He was on Quest #36, when they left our dear friend Rhodus for dead. Unfortunately he wasn't, and he killed the poor hero. Then I got it, after Rhodus was defeated again. He's not very good at winning is he? When I defected in the search for false hope,I imagine everything said was false and to ensure my allegiance to you, Galen got it. He is a fantastic Hero, one who I look up to.

Now I have it again.

En Garde Regret. "

Romulus laughs as he attacks Blue from the back row.
