CommanderFox Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Thanks for the Hi-res pics GRogall! Very excited about these new sets! They seem alittle small but the minifigures don't look bad at all! Love Arwen CF Quote

just2good Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Anyone have any info for what the hobbit sets are this year? None anything definite yet, but if you're in for some crazy speculation about the DOS sets by me based on a mini-poster (which was later revealed to be from the AUJ times), check out this post I made a while back. Darth Lurtz Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 I always thought of a Minas Tirith set a three-level version with the gate and front walls, a middle level (living for citizens?), and then the citadel with the White Tree, throne room, and funeral pyre. Add in Gandalf the White with Shadowfax, Pippin (Gondor), Denethor, Faramir, 4 Gondorian soldiers, Gothmog, and some orcs with a catapult and a troll. A "battle-builder" set for $30 dollars with some orcs, a catapult, a wall, plus some Gondorians and a Rohirrim would be great. A mumak set for $40 with Legolas, two Rohirrim, and some Haradrim on a mumak would also be great. A $20 set with Eowyn, Merry, Theoden on a horse, and the Witch-King on a fellbeast would be amazing. To be honest, four waves of LotR could properly cover up everything the fans want. While I think your ideas are nice, I think you're being too optimistic about the prices. Quote
Mr_Malfoy Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 While I think your ideas are nice, I think you're being too optimistic about the prices. The prices I based off of the current LotR wave. The $30 set would be like Uruk-Hai Army, the Eoywn vs. Witch-King would have a brickbuilt fellbeast like Shelob, and the $40 set would also contain a brickbuilt mumak, like Shelob, but bigger. Quote

Str0ngbad Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 (edited) ^Make it 275. None anything definite yet, but if you're in for some crazy speculation about the DOS sets by me based on a mini-poster (which was later revealed to be from the AUJ times), check out this post I made a while back. They may use just those seven dwarves again this wave, seven making half plus Thorin. However, I highly doubt that Mirkwood Spiders and Barrel Escape will run for another year. If that was LEGO's plan, they'd have been better off waiting until the second movie to release them in the first place and just giving us a small wave the first time around; saving shelf space for other sets. The movie hitting the scenes those sets are based on might boost their sales some but it won't make them sell like they are new. Most people who would want them will already have them. We're more likely a small Mirror of Galadriel set than a big Lorien set, which would give us Galadriel and a possible variation of Frodo. I would rather that than Galadriel in a Hobbit set, which could make room for other Hobbit-only characters. This seems odd to me. I feel like there is far more to cover in LOTR than the Hobbit in the same amount of time. Also, (not much of a spoiler but I prefer to err on the side of caution) Galadriel should be part of the Necromancer/Dol Goldur action. I can't imagine anyone not wanting a set of that. Granted, her scene with the mirror is among my favorite of the trilogy. I just think she will fit better into a Hobbit set and now that LEGO has made Arwen, they already have her hair mold so she will require no new pieces. Edited May 4, 2013 by Str0ngbad Quote

Will it happen? I sincerely doubt it, but who know what Summer 2014 holds. Quote

I sincerely doubt it, but who know what Summer 2014 holds. Exactly! Alcarin, it seems like you are expecting some Death Star sized model or bigger. I seriously doubt Lego will devote the time or money to something that big for any other theme than Star Wars. The model Nuju made has lots of play features, still looks instantly recognizable as Minas Tirith, and is a fairly cheap price point for what you get. Is it perfect? No, I think he could of put the Fel Beast and trebuchets (Gondor/Mordor battle pack?) in another set to lower the piece count and price. That would free up some pieces to make the bottom wall taller. I think his MOC could also use some white detail bricks throughout and more gray at the base. I would hardly say it looks like "crap" or a "waste" though, far from the contrary. It's a very functional set. If you want some $1000 set like the MOCs people build nothing is stopping you from getting the pieces and making it yourself. For everyone else and kids, this set would be perfectly suitable. Again, you have to remember Lego is aimed mostly at kids. You aren't going to get everything YOU want such as mass battle packs and only 1 of each main character throughout the entire line with 500 dollar mega sets. That's just unreasonable. Quote

I rather have no Minas Tirith than a lame Minas Tirith... Love the city too much to watch its potential be wasted.... give us only 1st lvl of wall and Grond with siege tower etc.... and ill be happy rather have that, than have a failed minas tirith like on that project. Kids dont need 200$ or more sets afterall... any set with 150$ or higher is aimed for adult LEGO fans more than ever... you think parents will run to shop to Buy their kids Orthanc? no way... See I dont have much cash i could barely afford sets, but when I buy LEGO I want to buy them because they are amazing... If you make a 250$ or 300$ LEGO set its not for kids... you think every kid who gets 30$ LEGO set will also get minas Tirith for 250$ ??? I dont know any parent who bought their kid DEATH STAR Edited May 4, 2013 by Alcarin Quote
Deathleech Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Orthanc would make a great Christmas present for kids. Also, what do you have against that Minas Tirith Nuju made? You have yet to give any actual constructive criticism and instead just keep saying it's crap, trash, etc (you did this in his thread too). The fact you would rather have a wall and gate and Grond seems kind of silly because that's nothing like a Minas Tirith set should be, that's Grond with a gate. Quote

Look if you cannot see why that Minas Tirith is waste of a set I really dont feel like explaining it to you... but seriously maybe check this image http://images4.wikia...inas_Tirith.jpg then compare it to Minas Tirith in that project and then check how much better LEGO Helm's Deep resembles ACTUAL helm's Deep in movie and how LAME does the project resembles Minas Tirith... the size of the wall lvls are completely disproprotionate to the size of the set and it looks like a giant mountain stronghold rather than the Citadel seen in the movie (or picture) and i am yet to start explaining how Trebuchets actually look like they are SO LARGE compared to city size and there is tons more... Remember this is NOT a FORTRESS, this is a CITY! White City, without 1 building for its people? Clearly does not do ANY justice to the set. its tons more to say but I do not wish to explain it all to everyone, but anyone reading books and seeing Movies and checking City will see that this is just ugly recreation (yet still probably best from LEGO) of Minas Tirith that actually mocks the City... now here is how the City should look... http://images.wikia...._der_Könige.jpg Now put it in LEGO vision and divide it in 3 x 250$ set and VOILA you do the city justice The City has to be atleast 1,5x Orthanc SIZE... more like 2x if i remember correctly. deskp Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Orthanc would make a great Christmas present for kids. I disagree, cause of the limited minifigures. Not only are there very few minifigs in the set, none of them are the action hero kind, just old men and some uruk/orcs they might already have. If youre gonna spend that money on a kid several cheaper sets is better value. Assuming the kid already have ALL the other sets is abit of a stretch for most. Quote

And they quite possibly could make a very passable Architecture scale City of Minas Tirith set. But Minifig scale, it's not going to happen. Ever. The best we can hope for is a nice robust play set that communicates the basic shape and feel of the main action. The siege. The beacon. The tomb and precipice. There are really only 2 ways to pull that off. Several completely disjointed play sets with a hunk of white wall and some soldiers and Orc's, ala the horrid Mines of Moria. Or a larger "Wedding Cake" style selectively compressed set ala the CuuSoo project. You say Helm's Deep is accurate. Really it isn't. It is just as much selectively compressed for minifig scale. The new Black Gate set is even worse. How high should those walls be? But it communicates the idea and the scene. Heck I remember he wonderful MOC of Orthanc some AFOLs did for one of the Lego shows. In true minifig scale the tower is over 2 meters tall. Minifig scaled Lego sets are not meant to be scale models of the subject. They are meant to be a representation of the subject balanced for play. (Or weird AFOL swooshing and fondling). Quote
Delta 38 Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 The City has to be atleast 1,5x Orthanc SIZE... more like 2x if i remember correctly. Well, I really doubt we're ever going to see anything even near the scale of Orthanc. Orthanc is a tower, firstly, and the height of the set was probably prioritised over the structure (which is why we only get half of it, though you could say we would've gotten half anyway). Orthanc also has an interior which works rather well, I'm not sure what Minas Tirith has besides Denethor's hall. More importantly, where would the interior be? Probably not in the walls, so that's at least half of the set just being there for decoration. I think the idea posted on Cuusoo is quite nice. Multiple layers of walls is about all I can think of doing at the moment, I can't see Minas Tirith realistically happening any other way. Quote

Problem is They need to scale Minas Tirith to helm's Deep/Orthanc/Black Gates which means Minas Tirith has to be about 1,5-2x size of Orthanc Tower which is like 70cm??? So In order for Minas Tirith to even REMOTELY look like it should even compared to minifig size it should be about 100-115cm tall minimum(top of the white tower that is) It would be absolutely HORRID if Minas Tirith is not TALLER than Orthanc.... Black Gates so far are the worst when we talk about those problems , oh an ofcourse the Weathertop, but ok we can imagine weathertop being only the upper part of the once mighty tower and it passes ok. Well, I really doubt we're ever going to see anything even near the scale of Orthanc. Houses of healing, inns, each wall lvl had its own garrison with stationed troops, and all these people need to sleep somewhere ... I am sure they had library (possible multiples) and tons of other stuff... Minas Tirith is not passable exactly because of its size... Everyone is entitled to his own opinion and me as a LEGO and LOTR fan say I rather get NO Minas Tirith as a whole) than to get a dumbed down version that does the beautiful White City injustice.... Anything smaller than Orthanc would make it injustice btw. Quote
