I think on the whole, you're correct.

As an aside, my five year old son's three favorite things are Lego, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars - which I attribute to my excellent parenting. I texted my wife the Lego Orthanc video the day it was released to show my son while I was at work. Her response was "he wants to know how long it will take for him to save his allowance to get it...as if you're not going to buy it the day it comes out."

She's right, but he doesn't know that yet and we're getting extra mileage of his chore chart because of it! Again, excellent parenting.

It's posts like this that prove LOTR is popular with more than just teens and adults! Really makes me hopeful that this line will last!

I would be fine with Lego breaking Minas Tirith into a few sets and having one be the Citadel and White Tree like in the MOC Yooha posted. It looks really good. I don't think they would include everything in that MOC though, it looks like it easily would cost as much if not more than Orthanc and isn't even all of Minas Tirith. I would suspect Lego would only have the Citadel and the tree and probably opt not to include any of the side buildings or the (large) gray base. If they do make a base, they might give a thin one leading out to a point at the end to give the overall shape of the top of the city. That could be a nice $80 set that includes Faramir, Denethor, Pippin in Gondor clothing, Gandalf the White on Shadowfax, and 2 Gondor guards.

I would still want at least a gate set though, and I am not sure how they would make the two connect without making the Gate set huge, or making a third set that includes most of the middle of the city. Minas Tirith has a really iconic look, just like Helm's Deep does so I would like to see a set that includes the whole city if possible, even shrunk way down

I agree with that play sets are fine, but it will be impossible to connect them

maybe if they make Grond+gates and then simialr to uruk hai army white wall+ soldiers/orcs/catapults

The Ship Ambush set review was great, though, aside from the minifigs, there isn't too much I find interesting about the set. It looks good, though.

I'm headed to the Lego store next week and I sure hope these sets make an early arrival. If not, they are finally opening a Lego store in my hometown on May 24th. Life is good!

That'd be nice. Generally speaking, don't the sets only make early appearances at the big box stores? I thought the Lego stores only put them out when they're "supposed" to be released.

Sometimes, but the LEGO Brand Stores have been known to put the products on the shelves early if they happen to have the shipments in.

i'm taking the family to Legoland windsor for a couple of days near the end of May. I'm really hoping the sets might be at the store by then. At the moment my son is saving up for Arkham Asylum but if he sees the LOTR sets then all bets are off!

According to one of the managers at my local Lego store, that will never happen with licensed sets. The street dates on licensed sets are part of the contracts, and they mainly come out when the licensor wants them out. Some of them, such as Lucasfilms can throw a fit to Lego when they get broken. It's one thing if a store breaks the street date on an internal line such as Galaxy Squad or Castle. That's really just an issue between TLG and the vendor. But breaking it on the licensed sets gets the license holder involved, which gets painful. I think TRU caught some flak last year for breaking the street date on the summer wave Star Wars sets.

I see. Well, I know that some other stores, such as ToysToysToys, had the Hobbit sets out in November. Sure, they were overpriced, but so is every set they carry. I was just surprised to see those sets out at that time.
