BlueberryWaffles Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) On the REAL SDCC Azog, I'm wondering now that Mark Stafford denied the claims that we might actually see that exact Azog. Which would make me a happy duck. EDIT: I made the post for the 200th page! Yay! Edited July 29, 2013 by Tolkien Quote
Gryphon Ink Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Lynx, I think you and I should go Hobbit-watching together! I have exactly the same issues with the movies that you mention here. I'm even more down on the movies since I just finished re-reading the Hobbit and LOTR cover to cover (first time since before any of the movies came out) and am reminded of all the rich lore and history and secondary characters that had to be skipped over in the movies, and the character growth that all the Hobbits go through in the books, which had to be mostly ignored so that Frodo and Aragorn could be the great heroes of the movies. Still, this won't make me stop loving the movies and everything that they did get right. And even AUJ, for all its faults, is one of my favorite movies of the last few years. I could pop it in the DVD player right now and start grooving on Erebor and singing Dwarves. There is some magic in those scenes, one of the things that PJ definitely changed for the better. Thror going crazy in his treasure vault might be over the top, but it works so well and sets up a great character arc for Thorin, and Richard Armitage is living that role. Due to this, I am less interested in anything concerning the Hobbit, including LEGO sets. I loved An Unexpected Gathering, and I would probably purchase a well-made Erebor or anything with Radagast (although I'd always be reminded of that horrible bunny-sled chase in front of a green screen). Still, if the Lake-town chase is any indication of what's to come, I will pass on much of this wave. The set looks rather uninteresting and lacks 'displayability'. This is hardly the fault of LEGO, of course. The Hobbit simply doesn't include locations comparable to LotR, after all. Again, I agree, BUT EREBOR!! What a great location it is, and I am so eager to see what TLG makes of it. It's jumped over Moria in my personal list of most amazing locations in Middle-Earth, and is almost up there with Rivendell. This HAS to be the flagship set of this wave. Anything else would be an insult to the movie set designers. I'm thinking Erebor with Smaug for a $120 set, Thranduil's halls with Orc action for $70-90, the Laketown Chase in the $50 slot, small Dol Guldur scene for $20-30, and (hopefully) Radagast or (probably) Bilbo for $14. Assuming the 5-set quote (thanks, Deathleech!) is accurate. Beorn, unfortunately, gets cut again. I'd bet on it. The size that he is in the trailer makes it prohibitive for TLG to do him as a bear, at least. I think Beorn is destined to become the Hobbit trilogy's Tom Bombadil as far as Lego is concerned. Quote
8BrickMario Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 I am rereading the Hobbit on the trip I am am taking, so I'll be looking for anything to add to my LEGO DoS wishlist or hopes in the film list. Quote
Lynx Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Lynx, I think you and I should go Hobbit-watching together! Ha, let's watch the movies, discuss LEGO and play a game of LotR LCG :D Let me know whenever you are visiting Sydney! Quote
Deathleech Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I'm thinking Erebor with Smaug for a $120 set, Thranduil's halls with Orc action for $70-90, the Laketown Chase in the $50 slot, small Dol Guldur scene for $20-30, and (hopefully) Radagast or (probably) Bilbo for $14. I think Erebor would be more suitable as a TaBA set considering it's where the Battle of Five Armies happens. That, and if Smaug is a huge brick built dragon it might be really hard for Lego to do Erebor justice with a lot of the set just being devoted to building Smaug. The only reason I couldn't see Erebor being a TaBA set is because the action happens more around the outside of the mountain than inside with all the grand halls and such. I really hope Beorn is included in a set eventually. If not this wave, surely they will include him in a Battle of the Five Armies set since he has such a prominent role there. I think a big cool bear mold could really help sell the set to kids. Beorn's house would also make a terrific $70 set similar to Bag End last year. It would look great as a display piece because Lego could actually do the whole house, or at least the entire front. My only concern is Lego didn't make it when the Beorn scenes were in AUJ so that shows they had no intentions of making the set originally back then which is a bit concerning. With that said though, Tom Bombadil is a little different since he wasn't even featured in the movies making it impossible for Lego to make a figure of him even if they wanted to. Quote

Deathleech Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) The video game is lisenced from the book aswell. Yup! It's a little confusing, but Lego has the license through Warner Brothers to create the LotR/Hobbit Lego sets. Anything they make has to be based off things featured in the films, not from the books. If it's not in the movies they can't make it since then they would need the book rights. WB Interactive published the Lego LotR game though and they have the rights to the LotR books so basically anything in the books they could of included in the game, even though it's done in Lego. At least that's how I think it works. Edited July 30, 2013 by Deathleech Quote
Gryphon Ink Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I just meant that just as Bombadil is the LOTR character most fans of the books missed in the movies, Beorn is the Hobbit character fans of the book will miss in Lego form. You could be right about him appearing in TABA sets, but I think the odds are against it. The Battle of Five Armies already includes wargs and eagles, and I think TLG will not want to make a special new Beorn mold along with those creatures. It's just not economical. Too many big animal molds means fewer minifigs and bricks, and people will balk at buying an expensive set that's very light on construction and minifigs.p Quote
N7LEGO Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I'm sure we'll have it too. He's one of the most important characters who came in the story after AUJ. Quote
Deathleech Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) Ya, I would be severely disappointed in Lego if they did not do a Beorn figure. In the books he has a whole chapter devoted to him and a very prominent role in the Battle of the Five Armies at the end of the book. I would guess PJ is adding a ton of his own material to give Beorn even more focus in the story too, much like he did with Radagast. I know Lego can sometimes skip important characters, but even if they didn't make a new mold they could at the very least reuse the existing bear mold and give it a slightly different print job. While not ideal considering Beorn's bear form size, it wouldn't be far off from how much they reduced the eagles. Edited July 30, 2013 by Deathleech Quote
Faefrost Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Beorn's house is one of the first movie sets that was revealed to the public, and that we (and the Lego design team) had detailed looks at. This alone makes me suspect that Lego has something Beorn based in the works. They tend to work with what information they have, and the earlier they have it the more likely it is it will be included as a set. Quote

I agree with all of this....I'd be really surprised if we didn't get Beorn in the upcoming wave. Lego don't exactly adhere to 'correct' scale in a many of these things (e.g. the new eagle) and so a repainted city bear would probably 'work' as Beorn in the context of Lego. Equally, they haven't been shy about developing new molds for LOTR/Hobbit so far (cave troll, goblin king, warg, eagle....) so an entirely new mold for Beorn doesn't seem that unlikely either....especially as I can't think of any other new molds that are definitely required for DOS.....assuming, of course, that Smaug is brick-built. Str0ngbad Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) Most importantly, I don't think anyone else in a Beorn's house set would require a new mold. Lego should have been free to design Beorn, both man and bear forms, however they wanted to. I don't like his size in the trailer so a scaled down version will suit me just fine. Worst case scenario: I buy a City bear and name him Beorn. Edited July 30, 2013 by Str0ngbad Quote
SMC Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) I almost got the city set just for the bear when I saw it on sale so I would be happy with that or a new big one, as long as we get one in a set I want I don't mind. Edited July 30, 2013 by SMC Quote

In the book, it's said during the battle of 5 armies that Beorn is bigger as he become more angry so maybe that's why he's bigger than we imagined in the trailer because he look very angry attacking the dwarves Quote
Sam892 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 On the REAL SDCC Azog, I'm wondering now that Mark Stafford denied the claims that we might actually see that exact Azog. Which would make me a happy duck. EDIT: I made the post for the 200th page! Yay! I positive we will see this fig in a future set for two reasons. 1. This figure uses two new molds ( head and claw ). To create a single mold it costs a huge amount of money, so for two molds it would cost double. I doubt that LEGO would invest presumably tens of thousands of dollars creating two molds for one figure, that would be made in a limited quantity and given away for free. Even if its just a variation of this fig maybe using flesh colour or tan colour or white. 2. I haven't read the Hobbit but from the first film I got the feeling that Azog will be an important character in either the second or third film. Quote
BlueberryWaffles Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Duh. I know how expensive molds are. I'm not stupid. what I meant is now we could see TAN Azog. Quote
Gremer Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 2. I haven't read the Hobbit but from the first film I got the feeling that Azog will be an important character in either the second or third film. In the movies, he's the main Orc, so he is fairly important. I am expecting an Azog, just in a different color. Quote
Seaber Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Is it possible Lego made Azog tan like Wormtongue and Gollum to give them that pale, ill look. Then when he didn't look as good as he could, keep 100 of these an figures as a free giveaway and putting whiter Azogs into production? Quote
Captain Settle Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 No, I think they will have came up with the prototype idea a long time before the convention, so I don't think his tan is a mistake. Quote
ZCerberus Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Umm, hello? Is this whole page basically FUTURE set discussion? Once again, it belongs in the FUTURE LotR thread. This thread is for the sets we already know about. Quote
Kez Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Just read this analysis of lego LOTR and Hobbit sets, it was rather interesting http://www.brickpicker.com/forum/index.php/blog/13/entry-386-benchmarks-lotr-and-hobbit/ Quote
Kez Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 (edited) Oh, the black gate set is one of the best lotr sets IMO, the play features are great, the build is fun and the figures are awesome, Id highly recommend it (maybe even two) EDIT: Wahoo, 5000th post, crikey thats a lot of writing Edited July 31, 2013 by Kez Quote
