just2good Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) On that note I guess it's time for me to share this gallery I've been making, showing all the Current and potential future hobbit minifigures compared with the movie. Click the image to view the gallery. Obviously I intent to update as we get better images. {pic} Holy shiz-biscuit, you've out done yourself deskp. And I thought your comparisons last year were impressive... Wow, just wow. Edited October 19, 2013 by just2good Quote
SMC Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 + another one for great work deskp, did you do a LOTR comparison? Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Ah awesome deskp! Lego have done a pretty good job so far with regards to minifigures designs. Now to see the ones we don't have yet! Quote
Mutant Orc Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) I'm actual disappointed with this wave. The sets don't look anywhere near as good as I'd have liked, especially the Mirkwood Elf Army (of horrible generic faces) which is, quite frankly, . I don't like the necromancer and Azog looks silly in tan. Radagast looks strange too. The sets look empty for the high prices they will be sold at. The smallest set is the best. SMC Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Radagast look great to me and I am liking Azog more and more over the months but I would have liked him to match his warg better and think white would have looked good. The necromancer is not great but that might be how he is in the film. Quote
Speedza-Demon Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Does anyone else think that they might use Radagast's beard piece for Bolg? It's the right shape for it, if they changed the color and gave him a helmet it would work perfectly. Quote

Speedza-Demon Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 His beard is conected to his hat Really? Hard to tell from the picture. Nevermind then. Quote
Brickadiergerard Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Beorn! He looks like the Cowardly Lion caught in a wind tunnel. What is PJ doing?!? Whatever it is, it makes for one odd minifigure. Quote
Kez Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Great gallery deskp, hopefully we will get mini figs for those ones that you have listed in your awesome gallery, especially Bolg would be good, thanks for your work and dedication Quote

Azog was always tan/cream in the movie! The lighting of the shots made him seem white but even in the light scenes of dos he is obviously tan. radagast is highly accurate to his movie counterpart, they nailed the beard colour and the hat and the torso looks accurate. On the box art it shows in the minfig line-up he has a different face apart from his shocked look and I'm sure a double sided face will be the case. The necromancer is how he appeared in AUJ and probably Dos too! I am intrigued to see how the scene plays out. Quote
Dr.Cogg Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 I like these sets, but I wish Dol Guldur looked more like the huge ruins in the pictures, rather than just a battle scene from the movie. The set kind of reminds me of Mines of Moria. Quote

The_Chosen_1 Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 As awesome as the sets are, one gaping hole remains: Smaug. Quote

Gosh, you are angry. personally I think all the sets are... reasonable. The Beorn set looks like it'll be the same price as Shelob, but the Mirkwood set looks like it was intended to be larger and has had to be cut down to Uruk-Hai Army size. Those walls are too short! If Escape in Barrels is supposed to be under it, it'd be taller than the whole structure. Don't tell me you'd Rancor Pit/ Jabba's Palace it. The Dol Guldur set looks fantastic minifigures-wise, even if Azog is the wrong colour (I stand with that- he'd just look horrible on a white Warg), but a little too cluttered in shape. And what on earth could be wrong with Radagast? He looks perfect for the character, even if leg printing would be highly appreciated. Quote
Mahtion Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) Ok now that the finished pics are out we can definitely see a better idea of what this wave has to offer. Oddly enough my favorite set is DGA because it is most complete and 'polished'. Sometimes less is more if the details are there and the overall set looks complete and high quality. A large set while nice may lose some details and appear bland or incomplete or poor quality. I think DGA has a great ruins piece with a fun play feature as the axe booby trap allows for some interesting elements. Beorn while small looks distinct and interesting and the two Gundabad orcs actually have hair. Mirkwood Elf army had the most potential but I am now debating on whether to get it. It is not very accurate, detail-less and the Minifigs dont look quite like their movie counterparts. I like others am disappointed in the lack of Elven helm molds and I fear that lego may never make the Mirkwood armored guards we see in the trailer. These Elves are a mix of Legolas/Tauriel rather with strange leaf shaped shoulder wraps which have no resemblance to the movie so far. We only get more longbows and PoP daggers and a typical generic grey broadsword. Just to tease us, we get the heavy tower shields (poorly printed no mold) that the Mirkwod armored guards carried which makes little sense now with these leather clad ranger type Elves. We never see any curved elven swords which are so iconic to PJ's Middle Earth and feature so promimently in Mirkwood carried by almost every soldier type. Thranduil and the orcs are the only redeeming factor of this set sadly.I was hoping for some lanterns or braziers like in the trailer, I do like the storage space inside the tree! DGB is great! I love the minifigs and the amount of play features. The statue is great as others noted and I love the walls, wrought iron spikes and the stairs. I just hope that it will look like Dol Guldur proper once it is folded back as others have suggested as a possibilty. Like some say Lego gives us great and then not so great sets. Sometimes the lack of consistency is sad but we remain hopeful. I just look forward to TABA and the possibility of more armor or helmet molds for the Elven infantry, the Iron Hills Dwarves, and the heavier clad orcs. Edited October 19, 2013 by Mahtion Quote
greeny Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 (edited) As awesome as the sets are, one gaping hole remains: Smaug. I actually prefer not getting Smaug in this wave. For the next film there is hardly any material to base sets upon SPOLIER I can only really think of Erebor and the Battle of the Five Armies SPOILER so it makes sense to get Smaug or otherwise it will be a pretty empty wave! Smaug may be an exclusive or a larger set in Wave 3, that is a possibility. I think Wave 3 will feature BoFA heavily and some Erebor/Dale locales, also the White Council (Galadriel and armored Elrond?) may rescue Gandalf and that could be yet another Dol Guldur add on set. Darth Malgus Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 I think including Smaug as he's in the movie title and an important part of the story that's missed, wonder if the new orcs will mena we will get some Mordor orcs if they decide to do a 3rd wave of LOTR Quote
CMP Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 I'm loving these. Mirkwood Elf Army is amazing. Quote
SMC Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 more pictures of the backs of the sets on this blog, I must have missed them if they were linked to before. http://animatostudios.blogspot.co.uk/ it makes 79011 - Dol Guldor Ambush more interesting with the axes and shows are 79012 - Mirkwood Elf Army comes apart and look like a few world look good added together Quote
Fives Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 So now that we've got some official images, here are my thought: Dol Guldur Ambush: simple, but effective. This could easily be used as an Orc army builder. The build itself looks nice, although the big swinging hammer and axes on the back of it kinda look stupid. Beorn looks awesome! The hair/beard looks fantastic! Shame he isn't taller. I'll likely get at least two of these. Mirkwood Elf Army: another great set. A nice build, which looks like it allows for additions of more sets to expand the base. Thranduil looks great, as do all of the figs. And the Warg is nice. Probably get two of these. Dol Guldur Battle: Epic! I love it. Lots of new figs! Radagast looks spot on, and Azog is sooo great! The Necromancer looks a bit weird, but my opinion will likely change after I see the movie. All in all, this is a great wave! I can't wait to get my hands on these! Quote
Wardancer Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Hmm, with my focus on elves I was half looking forward and half scared of the Mirkwood Elf Army set. Looking forward because of the new options it would give. Scared that it would be the mega perfect game changer which would overshadow my own elven army and/or cost me big amounts of money. Now I am half disappointed and half relieved. A game changer it is not. Three times the same elf with a print that is Tauriel's with extra leaves on the torso. Good for elven rangers or something, but in no way reaching in the potential that elf figs can have. 2 shields is a nice amount but I do not like the design. The forest maidens was the last really good elven shield. So I guess I won't know what to do with these shields. Maybe they look better in reality. Thranduil is awesome and a another good example for how good figs can get. Maybe it will make sense to use him for regular soldiers if he will ever be available for a reasonable price. The warg is the second highlight. Interesting that they release them in a third color now. I still remember seeing a preliminary dark tan new horse which never made it to the market. I hope the warg will really come in dark brown. They do look a bit odd with saddle and rider, because they are not as tall as a horse, but one can still make nice mocs with them. So I guess I will buy 3 MEAs, sell off the orcs and buy one more warg. This will make one regiment of elves and maybe one regiment of Thranduils at some points. It is a nice addition to the army, but no basis for a new one. Quote
