Mahtion Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Orcrist is the biggest disappointment of the Hobbit wave, it deserved its own mold. The shape is unique, nothing like the short sword that has been recycled from LOTR hobbits to now the Hobbit dwarves. It is iconic and featured heavily in the movie, much more so than Sting. Sting does glow a 2 or 3 times but it was never even named! All the characters responded to the legendary status of Orcrist. The only reason Sting gets a mold is because it already exists in the LOTR wave where Frodo has it. Quote
Cammo Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Looks like there will be more variation for Bilbo. He wears a blue coat when he meets Smaug: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3726486528/tt1170358 Quote
Sigolf Brimabane Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 (edited) He names Sting when he encounters the Spiders in Mirkwood forest, which is the first time he uses it. It definitely deserves a new mold. And so should Orcrist. Glamdring fits well with the regular long sword, but as for Andúril it 'should' get an own mold because of its importance, but it won't. The Sting swords could be used in an ancient theme setting due to its resemblance to a Spatha sword used by Greeks. Or maybe rather a Roman Pugio knife... The only reason Sting gets a mold is because it already exists in the LOTR wave where Frodo has it. Sting doesn't have a name yet in The Hobbit. Balin explains to Bilbo that great swords earn their names, and The sword that will later be known as Sting "really is more of a letter opener." There is a specific point in the book where Sting gets its name, and the movies haven't gotten there yet. (Although Lego sort of did.) I agree that using the short little hobbit sword for Orcrist is my biggest disappointment. ( I finally violated my normal purist tendencies and got an acceptable replacement from Brickforge. I just couldn't stand Thorin without it.) I would absolutely love it they made Sting, Orcrist and Glamdring in that new Monster Fighters glow in the dark plastic, just for one set, so we could get them glowing around orcs and goblins. General Magma Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 (edited) I hope you're correct, but I remember your certainty regarding a new mold for Orcrist - which never happened. That seemed like a strange move from LEGO's side, since it's a rather unique weapon that looks nothing like the short sword Thorin actually received. We have seen Anduril/Narsil in both the video game and an earlier poster, however. I'm pretty sure I should be right this time, the sword I thought was Orcrist just looked a lot like it as for shapes, even in the blurriness. If anything, I was right about both The One Ring being a new mold and Legolas using the olive green color that was newly introduced back in December/January, so I haven't just been wrong about things. If Thorin was included in the Goblin King set, Orcrist would definitely be needed there because of the Goblins' reaction upon seeing it. Unfortunately, every Dwarf only appears once, so that may have been a potential chance lost. Something else I personally found strange was the lack of Thorin's wooden shield in the Warg Attack set. It's where he gets his nickname from (Oakenshield) and it was used in the scene, so why not? Even an attempt at depicting it like a printed 1x3 flat tile would've been better than nothing. Quote

General Magma Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 (edited) My first lego MOC *snip* Although this is not the topic MOCs belong to (I'd recommend you to make a separate topic for it), those are two fairly impressive armies of Rohirrim and orcs. Where did you get all those orcs from, especially? The MOC doesn't seem bad either, but there's too much of the same foliage all around. I'd try changing that. General Magma Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Does anybody know of a good discount that may currently be going on within Europe? I've let myself miss out on the 20% discount (amazon.de) from a few weeks back, but now I'm hoping that there may be an even better discount in the future, though currently there seem to be none and anything below 20% doesn't work for me anymore. Does Amazon have such discounts organized for certain time periods and is it known when a possible next one may take place? Quote

jhc2nmfn Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 That new glow in the dark plastic would be awesome for those swords especially as new molds. Im fairly certain were going to atleast get a different sword for andruil, id be happy with the sword of gryfindor from hp hogwarts set. Just as long as its different. As far as orcist goes and even the oaken shield, if lego only made the sets based off of book knowledge and set pictures and stuff then maybe they never really saw what orcist was going to look like so they didn't want to attempt one. This would easily be proved false if TLG did in fact see the movie prior to making the sets but I doubt it. I mean you would think that they would have atleast given him a shield instead of another axe if they had the knowledge from the movie. Maybe now that the movie is released and they see the weapons better some new molds will be released. Just a thought. I remember the discussion on whether or not the 'bonus level' structures Quote

The physical Oaken Shield was most likely something that Lego did not know about until the movie released. It isn't an element of Thorin's backstory from the books and does not appear in the concept art or production materials. It is a character detail that Richard Armitage, the actor playing Thorin came up with as part of his characterization, and was not revealed until very close to the movies release. As far as how to do an oaken shield. Hmmm? Has the loud hailer / old SW blaster ever been produced in brown? Edited December 30, 2012 by Faefrost Quote

Although he may have thought of it for the Warg Attack, the original Oaken Shield idea was present in the appendices. Quote

deskp Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 (edited) I'm doing a little experimenting with some Rivendell structure. 305 pieces without any of the patform in the back. Edited December 30, 2012 by deskp Quote
Mr Narwhal Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 (edited) Well, this is my first post, and I have some GREAT news. On the pictures of the preliminary sets, there is a blue Lord of the Rings banner going across the top of the page. If you look closely, it appears that the banner continues on to the next page, meaning the sets we know of now aren't the only ones. Here's proof: http://imgur.com/wXBw5 . Although I may be wrong, I think we still have something to look out for. Edited December 30, 2012 by Mr Narwhal Quote
Mahtion Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 (edited) Welcome Narwhal! I like your enthusiasm but I don't see a blue banner, more like black. I also don't see how it continues unless the other sets like Castle and City didn't have the same color banner. Oh and deskp awesome job on Rivendell. The tower looks skimpy and thin but this is a promising start and is inspiring. Please design more including the scene in the Hobbit where Gandalf speaks to Lindir and Elrond rides around Thorin with the other Elf riders. Edited December 30, 2012 by Mahtion Quote
Fives Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 deskp, you've done it again! That Rivendell is really nice, perfectly fit with LEGO's Council set. I would really love to see that as a set, only it would be better if the inside was Frodo's room, with a bed and a couple chairs, which would mean the set cold have Gandalf, Frodo in casual clothes, and a Rivendell Bilbo.
