Lordof theBricks Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Because frankly, we may not have two or three more years of LEGO LotR. From what I remember, Indiana Jones was a line that sold really well, but after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out, they only released another wave or two of sets. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happened here. If we do get another wave of LotR sets, we absolutely need at least one Gondor set, preferably more. If that Witch-King set doesn't come this year, it should definitely come then, as the Witch-King and Eowen are both key characters. Either a Treebeard or a Balrog set would also seem necessary but I doubt we'll see either in the same wave. If possible, I have confidence they will release some kind of Minas Tirith set. Amon Hen, although not completely necessary, could also make a great set. This doesn't leave a lot of room for Arwen, who is one of the main characters in the movies, and the overall Middle-Earth mythos. Frankly, it is much more crucial she comes in this set than Old Gloin. Why are everyone so pesimistic? I actually never thought LEGO Lotr woll work just 2-3 years.I do believe that this will be one of the most selling lego ever after Star wars and Ninjago. There is soo much important characters, and sets they can make,so I do believe LEGO Lotr will work for next 20 years, like Star wars. Why are everyone soo scared they will not? Quote

Its not like star wars at all. LOTR/hobbit is done after the last hobbit movie. Star wars keeps interest alive with some tv-show that is aimed at kids and are the top target for LEGO. Lotr/hobbit won't have much or any support after the last hobbit movie is out on bluray. Quote

Delta 38 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 A bit late on this, but regarding the Fell Beast, I don't think it's large enough to be accurately portrayed as a brick-built creature. If we're getting a moulded Eagle in the Black Gate then any Fell Beast we get can't be too much larger than that. Smaug MOCs can't really be compared to Fell Beasts because Smaug is bigger and can be rendered in a less-blocky form. Though I prefer moulded Fell Beasts, it's unfortunate that we lose poseability, particularly in the wings. Part of the reason why they're so intimidating in the films are those huge swooping movements it makes. Quote
Ardelon Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 (edited) Maybe a more realistic way to get a molded fell beast (which I prefer to a brick-built variant) with enough construction elements in the set would be to combine it with an attack on Minas Tirith set. Think this: a stretch of wall and a siege tower or catapult with two Mordor Orcs and a soldier of Gondor. Maybe even add a tower with a Gondorian trebuchet, for the fell beast to knock down. Then: 1) either Eowyn (on her horse?), Merry, Witch king on fell beast 2) or Gandalf on Shadowfax, Pippin, Witch king on fell beast Six figs, of which 3 main characters, a horse, a molded fell beast, and plenty of construction. The one downside I see to this is that it would be a pretty big set, and it might mean no small Uruk hai army type set for Gondor soldiers and Mordor Orcs (though this drawback would be mooted if TLG released battlepacks). ShaydDeGrai Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 A bit late on this, but regarding the Fell Beast, I don't think it's large enough to be accurately portrayed as a brick-built creature. (snip...) If you go back to the source material, you'll realize that, even in the movies, the portrayal of the fell beasts was too small and the image from the video game ads is downright tiny. If you assume that a mini-figure is about 6ft (1.8M) tall. A Fell Beast _should_ be about 48 studs long with a 56 stud wingspan. The talons alone should be large enough to entirely wrap around a horse and rider. Granted, as portrayed in the movies, the fellbeast were very serpentine (the books suggest more of a featherless bird / pterodactyl-ish creature) rather than bulky and muscular, but the overall length would still dwarf a conga line of cave trolls. A molded fellbeast on this scale isn't LEGO anymore, it's an action figure crossed with a model airplane. Molding it on a smaller scale and you run the risk of the fell beasts looking cute or cartoonish rather than being one of the most terrifying creatures in Middle Earth. I can appreciate various arguments both for an against a brick-built model, but fell beast being "too small" isn't one of them. I think even my own brick-built take on the subject matter make the creature smaller than it should have been. Quote
Durins Bane Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I very much doubt it but does anybody reckon that the tower of orthanc set will be announced at the brick fair 2013 on January 18 because on this link http://www.hothbrick...nvier-prochain/ it says that there is going to be a new exclusive set announced on January 18th, or will it be a non licensed set? I will be at Brickfair again this year, as this is my home. I will also be displaying my minifig scale HD. I will let yall know what happens.,, Quote
Vindice Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 The Battle of the 5 armies should be a lock in set, I thought movies 2 and 3 were going to be shown only 6 months apart? that is correct, only 6 months between parts 2 and 3. One thing people need to keep in mind about any set that could feature Eowyn, Merry, Witch-King and Fell beast is that there is little chance of this being a low priced set. I believe the molding and printing process for large beasts is very expensive for TLG. I think for this reason there is a greater chance of it being in a larger set, possibly Osgilliath although I never saw that set as being very likely. I do think we will potentially see a lot more wanted figures falling into cheaper sets though, TLG is very much reacting to market demands and they realise that the minifg has probably become the pinnacle of most sets (good or bad thing??) therefore I think we will be seeing Witch-King and Sauron very soon! I agree that we shouldnt expect LOTR to last beyond 2-3 years but It will depend on how well it sells. I expect they wouldve released most sets by that time so there will be little call for it beyond then. At the end of the day it comes down to money. Some licenses are a cash cow and everyone loves to milk a cow! Quote
General Magma Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 (edited) In the SW 2013 topic, somebody just mentioned there was going to be a new exclusive LEGO set reveal this weekend. I think it's gonna be the Tower of Orthanc, but I'm not sure. Edited January 15, 2013 by General Magma Quote
pathas Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I think that will be 10232 Palace Cinemas, but of course I´d like to know some news about Orthanc We will see... Quote

Lego Harry Potter was one of the best selling Lego lines ever. It was one of the only 3 Lego lines that turned a profit in the dark days of 2003. But it still quickly disappeared when the movies ended. These type lines almost always only make great profits in years where a corresponding movies are released. Just look at the difference in sales between LotR and Hobbit sets. Notice how quickly Unexpected Gathering sells out? The same even held true for Star Wars. That at least has been buffered by the success of The Clone Wars TV show. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 The Hobbit movies is why the license was purchased at all I'm sure. The Hobbit movies allows current marketing away from the TLG, so they can join in on the sales of other companies. I can't imagine the theme lasting too much beyond the last movie, unless they re-release the LOTR movies in theaters or 3-D Blu-Ray or something that may help push it into people's lives. With that said, as great as Hobbit sets are selling, I've seen some on clearance here at Target. I would assume they were mismarked since the same thing happened last year with POTC sets immediately after they were released. (And same goes for POTC, if there is another movie, they will release more sets). Quote

Sigolf Brimabane Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I hope they make a film about Túrin Turambar, who wouldn't wanna see The Children of Húrin become a movie? :D Though it is very obscure, so probably they wouldn't be able to pull it off. Everyone knows of the Hobbit and the LotR, but the rest of Tolkien's works are pretty unknown. Many people have heard of Silmarillion but never read it for example. There have been quite a lot of rereleases of films in the cinema, I saw that they were showing Finding Nemo in 3D when I went to see the Hobbit. I have no idea how they make old films 3D, but if they do that of the LotR trilogy I am sure people would go see them. It would be worth seeing them again in the cinema, despite the fact that I've seen them so many times over and over again since the release way back in time. Quote

I think even my own brick-built take on the subject matter make the creature smaller than it should have been. The game version is clearly much smaller than it should be. The Witch-king's Fell Beast bites Théoden's horse in the film, I think, whereas the moulded version in the game looks like it could barely swallow a minifigure's head. I'm imagining that if the Lord of the Rings line continues for some more years we'd see at least two Fell Beasts, one for the Witch-king and one generic Nazgûl (or unhelmeted Witch-king, like at Osgiliath). If that's the case, I don't see a brick-built Fell Beast being too likely, especially if there's an incentive to collect them. Lego models typically downscale things. Helm's Deep or Weathertop weren't even close to being minifigure-scale, and it's probably unrealistic that a brick-built Fell Beast would be made simply for more accuracy. The Oliphaunts in the game (also moulded) are downscaled like the Fell Beasts are, and if we ever see one of those, it's certain they will be smaller than they should be (horses were being stomped on at Pelennor Fields). Again, the moulded Great Eagle we're getting in the Black Gate is probably a good indicator of how big a Fell Beast would be, though by any definition the Eagles appear to be tiny. And yeah, I see your point about a moulded Fell beast looking cartoonish, but I think that applies to any moulded creature really. The Cave Troll and Goblin King we've gotten so far are both moulded and don't look as imposing as their film counterparts, but that hasn't really detracted from them as figures by themselves. There are plenty of examples - like Indiana Jones and Toy Story - that LEGO stopped releasing sets of after the newer movie came out. A lot of these lines were really effective. I've heard that Indiana Jones was selling extremely well, but they cancelled it anyways. There's no reason to believe the same won't happen to Lord of the Rings. Quote

Everyone knows of the Hobbit and the LotR, but the rest of Tolkien's works are pretty unknown. Many people have heard of Silmarillion but never read it for example. Unfortunately the Tolkien Estate have the rights for all remaining Tolkien work, and they are not selling them, so even if they wanted to make any more movies, if its not Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit then its not going to happen. They don't even have the rights to stories from Unfinished Tales including 'The Quest for Erebor' which goes into more details on why Gandalf was interested in the Dwarves quest. It is also the reason for the joke in the Hobbit movie where Bilbo asks Gandalf about other Wizards and Gandalf mentions that he cant remember the names of the other two 'Blue Wizards'. This is because they are only refered to in name in Unfinished Tales. Quote
metalandi Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I think LotR is more compareable to Star Wars than any other licensed theme. It's a really "big" thing so to say, and there's a big fanbase of the Tolkien world, that goes far above the movies. Look how long we have star wars already...i think there's a big chance it will be similar with LotR. At least the line will continue until the last Hobbit movie is out, i think thats pretty safe to say. So at least 2 more years. Quote
Faefrost Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Star Wars is and was an industry unto itself. LoTR's will be a much more finite license. Keep in mind that Lego does not have a license with the Tolkien Estate. They have it with WB/New Line. They can never expand beyond the precise things presented in those 6 movies. LotR will follow a similar product arc as Harry Potter. We probably have at most 5 to 7 years at the best case, and 3 to 5 years at the worst. Quote
