Do pardon me saying this, but when, even once, was Orthanc confirmed as a UCS? I might be wrong, but I don't recall ever being informed of this once in the thread.

There has not been an official statement from LEGO but user GRogall, whom I understand to be consistently reliable, has confirmed it. I'm thinking someone else confirmed it again a week or two ago in here. I don't know if either of them said it was 'UCS' but it's a reasonable conclusion based on its reported size.

I was able justify purchasing Lego LotR for the Warrior Elrond figure, but I can't justify the Unextended Hobbit for a Bilbo variant.

Well there is the additional perk of getting Blu-Ray and Ultraviolet versions too, even though most people (including myself) would probably be satisfied with just DVD.

You're right though, I don't think I'll be throwing down that much money if it was for the exclusive fig.

When should I expect the extended edition to be released? I may be able to convince a friend to split it with me since I don't have a blu-ray player... But if the extended edition will be coming out shortly after, I'll probably pass.

All I've read is that they will have an extended version at the end of the year to help push the next installment and in time for the holiday season. Seen here. http://screenrant.co...t-release-date/

Isn't the Hobbit extended enough? I'll admit I personally didn't mind the many diversions taken in the film from the book but to think they're going to pad it out even more is a bit frightening.

There was also a bit that was in the book but not in the movie. I'm excited for it but I may get this one rather than wait until November/December even though the figure isn't a must have for me. Thanks for the answer TheLegoDr.

I have been thinking about getting the Target exclusive set for Bilbo in market attire but now I'm not so sure. Pardon my ignorance but in the US everybody has Bluray and they are pretty cheap some as low as bargain DVDs used to be. Also bluray players are cheap as well and VHS and DVD combos are like twice the price. I jut can't imagine opting for inferior technology especially in the medium of film. Watching movies at lower than 720 or standard definition seems antiquated by today's standards of entertainment.

At any rate I would of rather seen this in a complete Hobbit set after all three movies are released, or at the very least in the extended editions version.

It sucks, but there were collectible editions of the individual movies that had bonuses you couldn't get with the trilogy set. They were well worth having - I'm still POed at myself for not buying the Fellowship set with the Argonath bookends when it was affordable.

Anyway, didn't PJ swear up and down that there would NOT be extended editions of the Hobbit movies? I thought the whole idea of extending the story into three movies was so that he could cram every single Hobbit-related idea he had ever had into the story onscreen.

If it turns out to be an exclusive minifigure, that would be totally unexpected.

Then it would be the An Unexpected Journey's Unexpected Minifig.

Navegating on youtube I found a video that relates Dominic Monaghan(Merry) and Elijah Wood(Frodo) to Lego.

Probably the have some of the LOTR sets. :classic:

I don't have Blu-ray.

Wait, what? Oh, come on...

I don't own a Blu-Ray player. Besides, I'm waiting for when the extended edition box set inevitably comes out.

I wonder if this is a deliberate move to sell more copies, since there probably are a number of people out there that are content to wait as well. If this is indeed exclusive then I'll be very sad. :sceptic:

(By the way, I've never heard of "Ultraviolet" before. Huh.)

Hey guys there will be a new bilbo figure with special blu ray versions in US. His market outfit.

Oh man, that sucks for people who don't have blu ray or who are waiting for the extended edition, like me :hmpf_bad:

Ultraviolet lets you put a movie on your computer and then download it on mobile devices (iPhones, tablets, etc).

Well, Bilbo does not excite me that much - and the torso is nice, but not that special. I just hope there will be an extended DVD edition having the exclusive fig. If not, well, it's not an Elrond, so no problem.

Just to point out, this is actually the Blu-Ray/DVD *combo* pack. A lot of movies are being packaged this way, hoping that people will buy them because at the moment they just have DVD players but they know that in the future they will upgrade to Blu-Ray. So, no, it doesn't suck for people who don't have Blu-Ray. It's actually better, because you know you won't have to buy the movie again when you upgrade your hardware just so you can get the best picture and sound.

I am in that category myself, and this just might be the version of the movie that I buy. Although I own and love the Extended Editions of LOTR, I really have little interest in an Extended of AUJ. I thought the movie already seemed stretched.

Well considering I have hundreds of DVDs, I don't really feel like upgrading them all to Blu-Ray as that would cost thousands upon thousands of dollars. Not only that, most new Blu-Ray films run around 10 dollars more than the DVD counterpart. That is a pretty significant amount when you consider a DVD is only 15 bucks anyways. That's almost a 100% increase in price.

Also Blu-Ray was in under 30% of U.S. households by the end of 2012 so no, "everybody in the U.S." doe NOT have Blu-Ray. Far from it in fact. It seems most people don't find the rather heavy price worth the slightly increased quality. That and a lot of people stream videos from providers like Netflix and Amazon now.

Well, if you look at the LOTR extended editions, having the movie itself in the extended version may be good, but all of the extra features and videos on the disc are still in standard DVD. So you could buy this and have the blu-ray version of the movie and rebuy the extended versions in regular dvd (when they are on sale) to get the best of both worlds if you really wanted. That's what I was going to do with LOTR since I bought the DVD extended editions 7 years ago or whenever they came out and will just now buy the movie only in blu-ray.

Back on topic: This Bilbo is neat and everything, but might not be enough to sell the movie. Some people who were going to buy anyway will probably buy from Target then because of this, but there are quite a few that will wait and/or just pick up the figure in the aftermarket.

I think dark blue would have looked better for the coat. That looks like the regular LEGO blue to me.

Edit: I agree with Deathleech. Most people I know can't tell the difference, even though I'm always amazed at how much crisper blu-ray is. So no one else I know owns a blu-ray player. And with that said, I only buy movies that will benefit from the blu-ray treatment (which surprisingly is few and far between) and usually only if I can find it on a good clearance. Most of my blu-ray collection was purchased on black friday deals. I guess technically my 3 year old daughter has a bigger blu-ray collection than I do, since all of her cartoons look millions times better on blu-ray than standard definition.

I do like Lego's trend of releasing exclusive figures we would not have itherwise seen with non-Lego products, even if I don't care about the Bilbo figure. I would love to see an exclusive Aragorn or Faramir figure with a future product IF they would not be releasing it otherwise.

Also, Blu-Ray is practically worthless IMO unless you have a very large television. It may make a small difference otherwise, but I don't notice it. Like DL, I have no interest in spending thousands of dollars to replace 500 dvds with a moderately better media. That and most of the dvds I own have not been released on DVD, and this is especially true with TV series. Blu-ray is the biggest rip off since Beta.

You are ofcourse entitled to your opinion, but calling Blu-ray the biggest rip off since Beta is way out of the question, just because you don't have a HD television to experience It's potential. And no one forces you to buy your DVD collection to Blu-ray, since there are Blu-ray players that just plays DVD's and upscale them properly to HD. LotR (and the upcoming The Hobbit) are a treat to my eyes with Blu-ray on HD television.
