Hi LGG. Sounds like you've got quite a train collection. I like the new Maersk a lot, but I would also love to have some of the old 12V sets. They take me back to how I admired them as a kid. I have a little display on my wall with some of my favorites. Now I want to add a harbor for the new City Harbor sets and the Creator Lighthouse.

In any case, welcome and feel free to share a picture of your collection.

Thanks for adding me 'Brickster'. Great town! I love how it changes time to time. I like the Maersk too, finally have them on there way. Super excited, though can't build them yet (no room or storage for other train). Looking forward to one day ordering the new Harbor and other city/creator set as well. I'll get out some trains for a photo shoot as soon as I can. In the mean time here are my steamers. Oh and should I post the others here or start a new topic? Either way, it doesn't bother me.

Great collection! This topic was intended to share your train collections.

I can't help but notice the wave of green - seems a popular color for LEGO trains as I look at some of my engines as well, even the European Cargo Trains. Might make an interesting discussion on a side topic.

Your custom black steamer/Emerald looks really nice as well. What are you using for your track bed?

I'm getting off topic, but how I wish that I had the space for a few tables in the room for a much larger layout. I would have a train(s) passing by a desert area with Wild West sets, a harbour with bridge and boats, a denser Modular City area, and other themes - that would make a good layout. I suppose I'll have to just settle for my little table now.

Hi All,

I am a former Lego-addict on the verge of relapse. I'm 36 years old and have played with Legos and Lego trains during my childhood, starting with the blue rail trains which belonged to my older brother. My favorite themes were City and Space (this was around the time of Star Wars). In 1983, I was fortunate enough to visit Legoland in Denmark during a family holiday. Needless to say, I was in HEAVEN ! The fact that i was in heaven was confirmed when I went into the Lego shop. I ended up leaving with the 7750 Steam Engine and the 7740 Inter-City Passenger Train, a bunch of tracks, switches, etc.

Fast forward to the present... I was walking around on the street in my city and saw a Lego shop and decided to go in. I saw the Emerald Express. Wow ! Then I saw the current Cargo Train set and gears started turning into my head. Thanks to the modern marvel of the internet, I started doing Lego train research and I ended up here.

I'm trying to fool myself into thinking that this is just a passing fancy. I know that if I start with the Cargo Train, it will be the beginning of the end and I will soon end up with the Maersk Train and the Emerald Express. Then I'll need some City buildings to round out my setup, o, and maybe some trees, and then I'll need some base plates, hmmm... (you all know where this is going I'm sure)... somebody stop me...

Thanks 'Big Cam' for the compliments. I also remember thinking "there are a lot of green trains", myself. It is an elegant color (E. Night). The other steam engine really pops, plus green is my favorite color. Perhaps it would be a good topic. So far we have 3? MOT, BNSF, and E. Night from Lego. An a ton of MOCs. I say go for it.

Actually that is the carpet  Since I don't have room for baseplates I chose a carpet that is. versatile. It acts as road, track ballast, and water. Very tight knit, very cheap. Those trains E. Night and Onyx Night are in storage. Those four lanes of rail where set for the photo. Thats actually the main road through town :classic:

Space is my toughest adversary as well. I'm constantly storing older sets for newer "used" sets to come in. New ones still in boxes :cry_sad:

Hallo train fans :classic:

I start building with Lego again two years ago (after a trip to Legoland, Billund) after two decades with darkage. My main interest is trains and started with moc a few months ago (norwegian trains). I`m a member of the norwegian afol association: Brikkelauget and the danish: Byggepladen.

Welcome ju87. I can certainly understand your thoughts. I find LEGO Trains really an interesting theme because one can go a few years without a train then buy the newest available, which sucks you in again. Only in the last few years have there been so many beautiful trains to choose from. I'm partial to Cargo Trains myself, but the Emerald is a fantastic set and introduced the PF system. I had to take out the motor of the Emerald to power the Maersk locomotive while I was waiting for the battery case to ship. Now I've got the Maersk running around the track.

In any case, hope you enjoy the forum and continue your LEGO Train interest.

The stack o' sets. I hear you! Got a few of those myself.

Hello!

I recently bought my first LEGO train... I'm an AFOL and my favourite themes are Castle and Pirates, but now that I have this train - 7938, I start to understand the passion of LEGO train fans. Currently I have only 7938 plus lights and the pack of straight and curved rails. I guess I will buy 7895 Switching Tracks soon as well.

I made this video with my stuff, have a look if you wish:

(HD also available).

Welcome to the Train Tech forum Nikola. It's always nice to hear how fans from other LEGO themes are enjoying trains. I don't have the red passenger train as I'm more a Cargo Train fan. I appreciate you sharing the video because when I power up my Maersk locomotive, I notice that same familar hum from the motor. Now I see (or hear) that it's not just my PF motor.

I hope you enjoy the forum! :classic:

Howdy all,

I have been a model railroader since the early days of my memory, crawling around watching my dad running his old Marx train until it quit and was replaced with a Lionel train set and a Bachmann HO scale train set. By the time I was in elementary school, I had trains of all kinds, except one to go with my small collection of Lego. I had no European trains, and something about the Lego trains in the catalogs that came with Lego sets in the mid-1990s screamed European to me. They were far outside the family budget however, so my hopes never materialized.

One Saturday morning during high school, I was at a garage sale with my mom. I noticed some baskets full of Lego, and went over to take a look. My eyes widened with surprise when I saw that there was a complete Lego train set (4561 Railway Express) in one of the baskets! After all those years, I had nearly forgotten about Lego trains. I grabbed the basket and went to ask how much it was. The lady said $15. My jaw dropped. I didn't have that much with me, but I told her if she held it I would be back shortly with the money. I told my mom and jogged all the way back to our house to grab a $20 bill, then jogged all the way back. I immediately set it up and tested it when I got home, and soon added a 10013 flat car, a pair of switches, and a box of straights. It held my attention for a while, but I liked the realism of my HO scale trains, and by the time I went away to college for architecture, I had again forgotten about Lego trains.

Fast forward to six months ago. Halfway through my final year of architecture school, I was beginning to think about what the next few years would hold and what place my hobby would have in it. Over the summer my latest adventure had been building HOn30 narrow gauge trains out of N-scale locomotives and cars, resulting in some small, portable trains in my favorite scale that I could carry around in a toolbox. But part of the fun of "real" model trains for me is the act of building trains and scenery, and carrying around an entire model workshop with me during the possibly "nomadic" years of my life ahead sounded daunting at best.

Enter Lego trains again! I remembered my old Lego train, and started thinking about how portable it would be. I looked up Lego trains online to set about expanding that old set again. My heart fell when I realized 9V was "officially" dead and I would have to convert to a new system if I didn't want to shell out $50 for a box of straights. But $90 for a complete Power functions package? I let the idea alone for a while, but the 7939 Cargo Train was beginning to grow on me. I finally decided to take the plunge and blew all my Christmas money on one when Lego SAH had their after Christmas sale.

I enjoy now having a collection of trains that I don't have to be as gentle with when I take them out and put them away, and are easy to take out and get running when I don't have much free time to spend. Plus, as a designer, Legos push all the right buttons as just looking good and being one of the most well-designed toys ever made. Not to mention my fiancee now loves that I have trains she can run without me having a heart attack. I will never stop "real" model railroading, but for now Lego trains are where it's at.

And that Maersk train is doing a good job of making me itch for more.

Let me offer a big welcome for Architrains, esp. with this being your first post.

I enjoyed hearing your story about finding a Railway Express in a garage sale. Just to find LEGO is a difficult thing, let alone a LEGO Train. I must admit that I still miss 9V, because slapping on a 9V motor was just so much easier than all these PF components. The big wheels of the Emerald Night is a big plus though.

Hope you enjoy the forum and share in out Train Tech topics.

Hi I'm Twistopher a AFOL from Upper PA in the USA. I bought the 7939 Cargo Train this past Friday night and have longed for those old 9 volts over the years but when your a kid and money is tight and your vices long (books, music, movies), well I went into a dark age lasting from the mid to late nineties til 2008. It took me a day till I opened the set and two days to complete (Saturday night and Sunday morning). Was it worth the money I spent? YES!!! Only thing i'm disappointed with is the PF controller, It fits in the palm of my hand, it makes me feel like a giant. Otherwisw PF works fine and even the flex track works pretty good.

Welcome to EB and to the Train Tech forum Twistopher. It is certainly never too late to come out of one's LEGO Dark Ages, especially with all the great models/sets that have become available over the past few years (Trains, City Modulars, and other Exclusives come to mind).

Glad to hear that you like your Cargo Train. I haven't built mine yet because the Maersk seemed to trump it. The engine looks really interesting though.

Hope you continue to enjoy EB!

Hey Everyone... I've been lurking about for ages... thought it about time I said hello....

I returned to Lego after many years away (the teenager, beer cars n ladies bit) and when my little Wifey fell preggers with son number 1 the floodgates opened... I went a bit mental buying City and Star Wars stuff.... I then went on to sell the sW stuff again as I decided to concentrate and building a City for my boys, yes boys, whoopsie baby number 2 came along in quick succesion!!! lol...

So, now, I have a handsome bundle of vehicles, tweaked and modded, a couple of interesting buildings n stuff. Now here's the twist....

While all that was going on I was also collecting oo guage train items for me.... but now, now I am getting rid of most of it in order to feed my craving for lego trains.... I love the concept... perfect combination of daddy/son fun!!! (more dad than son tbh....) and the latest range of trains really do inspire me to get involved....

I am awaiting the delivery of my PotC Queen Anne's revenge and already I am considering swapping/ selling it to get the Maersk set, I have already offered ALL of my Polybags in exchange for an Emerald Night in the sell/ swap forums ( http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=56081 ) & I should have the current freight set by mid June to get the ball rolling. I am very much looking forward to the MOC/MOD aspects of building a network and have a heap of ideas up the ol sleeve....

Hopefully it won't be long before I can display my own take on things, as I am a fan of British Diesels and hope to replicate some of my fave's...

Anyways, enough waffling, thanks for the inspiration, I hope I can so justice with my plans. Thanks in advance for having me here...

Rgds... JC

Welcome JC. Sounds like you have a good plan to acquire some LEGO trains, although I'm not sure if I'd part with my Queen Anne. I've got her on the fireplace mantle and like the colors. The Maersk is a beauty though. In any case, hope you continue to enjoy the forum and participate in our various Train Tech topics.

Hi all!

I'm RSLego, a TFOL. :classic: I currently have these Lego trains:

-Santa Fe Super Chief (I'm trying to convince my mom to allow me to sell it so that I can get the Maersk.)

-Burlington Northern Santa Fe GP-38 (My favorite Lego train! )

-High Speed Train (The green one.)

The rolling stock that I currently have are:

-MOT Caboose (Looks good with the BNSF. )

-A custom gondola car. (Carrys "grain" )

I hope to get more soon.

Welcome RSLego. I'd think twice about selling your Super Chief. You'll have another year or two to purchase the Maersk. The Super Chief brings a hefty price on EBay and other retired LEGO stores.

Hope you enjoy the forum.

EDIT: oh, make sure you vote for the BNSF in the Diesel Dilemma thread if you have not already done so.

Hi RSLego,

could you please give me the email address of your mom?

(I'll try to convince her that you are not allowed to sell the Super Chief  ) This is a piece of great value. Not only money-wise but LEGO-wise. This set has set the bars to quite high levels.

As The Brickster said (my interpretation of his message): Don't sell the Super Chief.:thumbup::thumbup:

Welcome and listen carefully what The Brickster says!

Hello Everyone

I am Stefanwest. I just started collecting Lego Trains. I am 47 years old and I grew up in Germany where Legos were my favorite toy. I still remember the first set I had. It was a Shell Oil gas station that came with a yellow tanker truck. The Lego cars and trucks back then had silver metal wheels. This past year I started collecting and building the Lego City sets that had trucks in them. I like building trucks. Recently I went and bought the Lego Cargo Train set (7939). I really enjoyed building that train and "testing" it on it's track. I have since gone and bought the Passenger Train (7938) , Emerald Night, Maersk Container Train and the Lego Factory Hobby Train (Swiss Crocodile) off ebay. So far I like the Hobby train and the Maersk. I wish I could go back and get the BSNF and the Super Chief, but those two are demanding high prices. I currently am trying to build a James Mathis designed German DB111. In my college days in Germany, I rode many of trains back to parents on holidays on trains with this engine. So far it is working out ok. I have to make some modifications because some of the parts are very hard to come by or not available at all. So I am making some modifications. I do use Lego Pick a Brick and the Bricklink website for parts. The Maersk train is really the top train for me. It is the most realistic looking train and I am hoping there are future train kits that use this as a base. So far my "testing" room consists of the spare bedroom where I put a small layout on the bed. :) Been reading the forums here for awhile so I decided to go ahead and register.

Thanks

Yes very wise advise do not ever sell the Super Chief it is one of the best LEGO trains of all time, I paid x4 the original price for mine. It is worth it though.

Hello Everyone

I am Stefanwest.

Hi Stefanwest, Welcome to Train Tech. I'm 45 and I know very well your shell station. It was in the first Lego catalogue I ever had, and I always wanted it as a child but never got it. I still have that catalogue, and when I started to collect Lego again it was one of the sets I searched for. I eventually got it again but the tanker is in very bad condition, so someday I'll replace it.

Hi, I'm sok, 24, from NL.

First lego train set I ever had was a second-hand 7727 back in 1994 (if anyone is selling one, contact me pls). I switched to lego technic around the age of 10 and what little train stuff I had got lost somewhere. Now, 15 years later I'm keeping a moderate Technic collection and only just started 12v trains again, slowly building up a collection. My budget is still somewhat limited as a student, and the prices that traders are asking for this stuff are retarded so it's taking awhile sifting through the ads to find the good deals.

I don't have much room at my current place to build lengthy track layouts but when I move to a new place somewhere in the next few years I'll get me a nice place for the trains. Back in the day me and my dad used to build mountains and tunnels from papier mache to decorate my lego city and I'm looking forward to doing this again.

- Sok.

Collecting the 12 volts that becomes indeed difficult

sometimes you can buy beautiful things on second-hand sites

much success in collecting 12 volt trains

Might as well add me to the list.

I Love LEGO Trains, the train sets were some of the first ones I had as a kid, and I still have a passion for them (along with all the other themes).

I have train sets from the early to late 90's, Metroliner, Cargo train sets, passenger trains, the new Emerald Night, to *soon to buy* Maersk train.

And not to forget the few MOC trains I have as well.
