WesternOutlaw Posted March 13, 2012 Author Posted March 13, 2012 Hi All, Hi Shayd. Welcome to Train Tech. Sounds like we have some similar background relating to the LEGO Train hobby, except for having a grandfather who was a train engineer. In fact, I think that's pretty neat. Hope you enjoy the forum. SDH Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Hi all, I'm Scott and I've been a Lego user since I was a kid in the 80's. My only train right now is a Metroliner (in pieces) that I got when I was a kid. Love seeing all the MOCs and layouts here. Quote

LiamM32 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 I'm new to Eurobricks and I also started with Lego Trains recently. The only train set that I have now is the Emerald Night. I have it motorized with Power Functions and I'm currently building a custom (MOC) coach to add to the train. You can see it with the unfinished coach in the picture. I only have 24 9v curved tracks, a blue crossing, and a few straight and curved blue rails. I'll try to get some PF straight track but it's expensive on Bricklink now and the options for train track Lego has now are very poor. I wanted to get a Lego train as a kid. It was one of the few toys I wanted back then that was neither well advertised, nor did my friends have one. Back then, I tried to get the High-Speed locomotive and some tracks from Shop at Home, but my mother must of made a mistake so it never arrived. So finally, after getting the Emerald Night in early 2012 (right after it's discontinue), and some track and PF, I think that it's great, and that I've been missing out all these years on a great branch of Lego. My next train will probably be either a MOC cargo train or the Maersk train. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted March 30, 2012 Author Posted March 30, 2012 I'm new to Eurobricks Welcome Liam. I think you picked the best train to start your LEGO hobby. I would recommend the Maersk as your next purchase. I doubt you'll be disappointed. Hope you enjoy Train Tech and Eurobricks as well. Quote
Iarnrod Raille Liath Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Hello, my name is David though my EB name is "Iarnród_Ráille_Liath" which means grey rail railway in Irish. My first LEGO railway set was blue rail level crossing 146 when I was 3. When I was six I got the trainset 7710 which I still have, albeit without its box. This was electrified with 12 volts conductor rails a couple of years later. In time I acquired other 12 volt (and a couple of 4.5 volt) accessories such as the remote controlled points (7858 & 7859) and level crossing (7866). Perhaps my best buys were locomotives 7755 and 7760 which I bought in 1992 and 1995 for €20 and €25 respectively. Though I take a passing interest in 9 volt trains and what followed that my loyalty is to 12 volt. My interest would be in operating and maintaining my 12 volt system. I am 35 next month and have fond memories of browsing for 12 volt LEGO when I was a child. I remember these being readily available north and south, especially in Dublin when I was a child. Indeed I recall when I electrified my 12 volt railway and I thought that I had 3600 instead of 1800 of conductor rails. My parents tried in vain to get a second box of rails but to no avail. As luck would have it we visited Mullingar in the mid 1980s, 80 kilometres west of Dublin. Though Mullingar would be regarded as being "down the country" or "outside the Pale" there were curved conductor rails on sale in a shop there. These were promptly purchased and 12 volt electrification was completed. Like any enthusiast I have ideas for my railway like converting scissors crossing 7996 for 12 volt operation. I will add that I am also into building HO scale models of Irish trains. I have met a couple of members of this forum in Dublin. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 Hello, my name is David Hello David. Welcome to our LEGO Train community. It sounds like you've got a long history with LEGO Trains and I too remember those fond memories of looking at 12V sets in a LEGO catalogue. Hope you enjoy the forum! Quote
EPJL Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 I have 4 trains + some rollingstock. thay are all MOC except for 10015 and 10017. The trains are inspired by real trains but they aren't replica's. Here are some pictures Crane (WIP) Quote
PeteM Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 (edited) Hi all - I've just got back into Lego and the trains after digging my old 12v system out of the loft and setting it up for the first time in 15 years! My layout is the same as when I was 14 (based upon one of those in the 7777 book) so I'm looking to extend and expand it in the next few months to make it more elaborate, run a few more engines etc, so will probably have a ton of questions to ask the more knowledgeable people on here (I've already got a load of useful advice just from browsing old 4.5v/12v threads!)! 1974 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Hi there TT (sorry, this a long post ..) My name is Ole Frost Berry and I'm a (LEGO)train nut Trains a wicked cool and I've been fortunate enough to both steer (is that the right term?) proper trains and to get inside info on motors etc plus been to a bunch of train museums Trains are definitely a turning point in the modern world, imo Back in the 80's (I'm 37 now) I was fortunate to own a bunch of the classics (+ some 'blue stuff'), like 7740/50/60 and a heep of tracks and automation (and those wonderfull buildings, oh do I miss them!). Unfortunally my life took many wierd turns and the lot ended up in thrash I've been away from the LEGO from since '89 to about 8 months ago. Of course one the first things I had to buy was the current batch of trains and also to look up some of the stuff I missed in that period. That was fun, a bottle of good redwine and BL/Peeron'in all night .. The 9V era just flew right ower my head and there's is honestly not very much of that I'd like to buy (I'd like the Santa Fe and the Metroliner though, but NOT for those prices). I've been to some exhibitions and I've seen the 9V system in full use, but for me it represents the worst of LEGO trains : Powered by rail (thus only one train on the same tracks at one given time), but no automation So I knew that system is not for me. It does have one huge advantage that I'll get to in a little moment .. PF really rocks! I like to make motorised cranes etc and I've also build motorised crossings etc, PF is perfect for that. Much easier than the old 4,5/9V motor system. But I like to make stuff more automated, which means using opto sensors etc. Of course that means stepping out of the LEGO universe and use electrical components that can do what I want and not what TLG offers. But I'm no purist anyway I find some of the latest PF/RC trains quite good. I don't have huge problems with the 7898/97 system and I've bought some of those as well. Of course the 7897 is design disaster with that huge gap, but I find the actual remote control to work just fine. And they have different powered trainbases compared the current PF trains. And my excuse to buy vast amounts of LEGO, eh I mean my son, likes that horn very much And that is the only problem I really have with PF : It's REALLY difficult to make a PF train with a narrow top section (like the 7760) because of that darn batterybox! If PF (batterybox/RC recivers) at least came in more colours, I'd be semi happy 9/12V really had an advantages here. So I try to work around that .. I'm working with custom LiPO/standard 9V batteries I can hide under the train or in narrow 4 wide bodies. So far, it's working well Yes, quite 'unLEGO', but I've chosen PF and 6-wide trains, so I must work around that until TLG offers what I want. Time will tell I'm an electrical technician that works with low voltage/batteries everyday anyway so it's a piece of cake So PF is my way. But of course nostalgia hit me and I've bought a few old 12V trains just to check them out again. A 7740 and a 7727, but really, they don't have the smooth ride like PF and are too much a maintance headache. And only one train on the same track. Not good. I'm gonna use the parts for something else and unload the rest So far my stock/stash includes about 15 of the latest PF/RC trains (the majority is 7938 for parts, they're cheap in Denmark), but no Emerald or Mærsk. I find those two quite ugly and I have no need for steemers and I'm not much for supporting Mærsk anyway (not a topic for this forum, sorry) .. so shot me, haha. Oh, I also luv the flextracks! Great if you don't have much space/wants to make weird curves, also great for making elavation I've only kept one 3677/7939 and a bunch of the rolling stock, the rest have morphed into new trains Sure, soon I'll display the lot. But right now I have to make the track/city. Luckily, I recently gotten a spare room in my flat. It's only about 12m2, but it'll have to do for now Good forum, not too shabby moderator (those 80's reviews you did really made me smile), good people, fantastic MOCs What's not to like? Quote

LovinLegoSince97 Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 (edited) I love trains and always have. When I was young my parents would take me on a few local trains that were around just for fun. I got a lionel model when I was young, and around christmas time I would bring it out and play with my legos along side of it...When I was growing up I loved Lego but there wernt very many trains. A couple in the Lego at home catalogue but when your that age my parents wernt willing to spend a lot of money on a Lego train for me (even though we were well off).. My best friend got one of the 9v models and we both loved it. ( I should see if he has it still...) A bout a half a year ago I found my whole stash of bricks in a large bag, all compents loose from my childhood, except a star wars naboo starfighter. Thats all it took for me to start up again....finding my old bricks. Now that im 23 I have two lego trains(Maersk and Red Cargo) and can only strive to get more! I must have bought 25 different small and large sets in the past months. I love building them, modifying them and anything that has to do with em! Ive created a small cargo yard and a small town to go with it on the other side...If I was a multi-millionaire I would buy Lego and donate to charity. maybe even donate Lego to charity! Since Im no millionaire I guess I can just try to work at making an acceptable Lego Metropolis. I can only hope TLG comes out with more and more trains.. P.S. Nice name *The Brickster*...Was an evil criminal in the Lego computer game "Lego Island" I begged my parents to get it for me because I loved lego but was getting older..My parents graciously got it for me when I was in the 5th grade. I learned about EB from LegoSjaak and have become good friends with him after much back and fourth "penpaling". He is a very nice fellow, with an amazing metropolis and trains. Ballast Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 (edited) Hiya, I am already registered here for a while but I guess I'm more of a lurker than an active poster I'm 26 years old, orginally from the Netherlands but due the nature of my job as chief officer on merchant ships, I spend more time abroad then in my home country. I grew up with Lego and the 9V trains in the 90s. My first train was a 4564 and a 4558 . After that, my dark age kicked in untill I purchased a 10133 hauling a 10170 . Ofcourse the 10120 hauling 2x 10025 had to be added to my growing collection too! Later on I added the 10194 , the 10129 Last month I was able to fulfill a wish that I had has a child by purchasing a 10001 . Soon I hope to make a train of my own using PaB and Bricklink Edited June 14, 2012 by Ballast Quote

ChristopherMcL2 Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Hello everyone, I'm relatively new to the world of LEGO trains. I have a few sets like the Toy Story 3 train and the Emerald Night. I'm hoping to eventually combine my modular buildings collection with a proper layout. One of the areas I'm really interested in investigating is layout automation. I would love to make all of the building light up at night etc. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 Hello everyone, Welcome Chris. You're certainly off to a good start. One of LEGO's most beautiful passenger trains and a Wild West Train. I'd give them . Hope you enjoy the forum. Quote
ChristopherMcL2 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Thank you for the words of encouragement Quote
