shinobisgreenshinpads Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Although the figures are my best friends since my pet kangaroo, I actually found the sets for nearly every superheroes theme to be quite disappointing. The castle and house from Monster Fighters on the other hand were action tastic, definitely my best of this year. Quote
ShaydDeGrai Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Although I haven't managed to get my hands on the last wave of kits for the year (sorry, Hobbits...) I'd say my year to date favorites include (in no particular order): 9474 Helm's Deep 10224 Town Hall 10228 Haunted House 10227 B-Wing Fighter 10225 R2-D2 10226 Sopwith Camel 10223 Kingdom's Joust 9398 4x4 Crawler 6869 Quinjet Aerial Battle 9396 Helicopter Quote

just2good Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 (edited) Hobbit sets do not count, right? 1. Vampyre Castle (Lovely set, great figures) 2. 6857 Funhouse Escape (Great price, awesome figures) 3. 9474 The Battle Of Helm's Deep (So recognizable, awesome figures, good price-per-piece) 3. The Zombies (Nice price, awesome figures) 4. Wolverine Chopper Showdown (Nice price, awesome exclusive figures, but a really bad chopper) 5. 10228 Haunted House (Okay price, nice figures, awesome house) 6. 3061 City Park Cafe (Great piece, PPP, two nice figures, and a great way to start a Friends collection) 7. 10229 Winter Village Cottage (Awesome PPP, but the figures are okay and the house is more of the same of the other Winter Village houses, but still good) 8. 6873 Spider-Man's Doc Ock Ambush (three good unique figures, great PPP, and some nice pieces) 9. 9471 Uruk-Hai Army (Awesome figures for the price, but not a good standalone structure with some meh pieces) 10. 9448 Samurai Mech (Good robot, but a little bit weird if used outside of Ninjago) Edited November 17, 2012 by just2good Quote
Vindicare Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 I'm going to add another vote for 30201 Ghost. For only being a polybag, it's right up there on my must buy list. For that reason, it's on the list. Quote

TheWarden Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 (edited) In no particular order... I would give LEGO Design Awards to these ten sets. I used a variety of reasons from whole set design, appearance, quick play experience, long lasting play experience, part inventory, minifig design, and a few others. I'll come back with explanations on each pick after lunch perhaps. 3315-1 (Inv) Olivia’s House: The best "doll-house" style set LEGO has ever produced, period. This set's design is light-years ahead of LEGO's previous efforts in terms of Belville and it's ilk, chock full of furniture, nicely designed rooms, play scenarios, etc and full of building details that even look good to AFOLS. Also, when you have customers outside your intended target (older male AFOLS) wanting to buy this, then you know you did something right. 4202-1 (Inv) Mining Truck:If you ever had a Tonka truck as a kid, this is one of the best sets to capture that flavorful fun. 4625-1 (Inv) LEGO Pink Brick Box: An underappreciated budget gem. Odds are if you are an AFOL, this bucket is probably useful to pad out your rare color inventory. 5887-1 (Inv) Dino Defense HQ: Dino got passed along amidst other themes for many I believe, but this playset, with one each of (most) of the dinos, just seems like so much fun. 6857-1 (Inv) The Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape: One of the hardest to get sets this year, it really hits all the notes and backs it up with a perfect set of minifigs in one spot. 6866-1 (Inv) Wolverine's Chopper Showdown: The helicopter design is not the strongest, but a very solid budget offering. 9492-1 (Inv) TIE Fighter: I have a few thoughts. One, this is arguably the best non-UCS TIE ever produced. It's a success a long time coming, not that all the other TIEs were failures, just that all the others seem to be in a similar design approach, while this one just comes ahead. Two, this has UCS design but at a non-UCS price appealing to the casual collector I think. 9516-1 (Inv) Jabba's Palace: Wow, again, miles ahead of the first one. First, it really is evocative of the source material. Second, ignoring the price, the minifig design is surprising. One might argue that they have too much detail, but we won't get into that here. 10228-1 (Inv) Haunted House: A refreshing take on the modulars to see something so different, it makes me wonder if we will see "non-Town" modulars again. 3300003-1 (Inv) Lego Brand Retail Store: A beautiful disaster, I say. It's so frustrating. I no doubt think that this would be a great seller for AFOLS if it was a normal buy-able set, why, who wouldn't get one to put on their desk at work, mantle, coffee table, etc? I would, but maybe I'll Bricklink something similar since most of us prefer not to pay the second hand market prices for it... Maybe we get a minifig scale LEGO store set sometime in the future? EDITED in reasonale. Love to hear if you agree with me or think these a bunch of bollocks. Edited November 18, 2012 by TheWarden Quote
