Hi,

When i was a kid I had the lego trainset 7740 which was given to me by my grandparents. Apparently they had gotten it thru a savings action and as it turns out they had received two sets back in 1980. One of the sets was given to me, the other one was placed somewhere in a closet and was forgotten till this weekend. So now i have the lego 7740 train set in a sealed box. The box is a little bit faded (colors arent as fresh as they used to be) but is in pretty good shape for its age. I also have the adapter 7864 in its original box with plastic still around the box (so even the box is still protected).

Although my grandparents have given me the set for my future son (my girlfriend is pregnant) i realise that it is very rare and must have some value for a collector.

So my question is, if im going to sell it, how much is it worth? Because of its rarity its hard to figure out a correct price.

Where is the best place to sell is? Do i just put it on ebay or what?

Peter54: this forum is not intended to sell or advertise your LEGO sets (esp. as this is your first and only post on EB), but as you've asked a more general question(s), I'm going to go ahead and leave your topic rather than close it. There is also a Question Topic in Train Tech for simply asking questions. We have a Buy & Sell forum on EB but you've got to be an established member before doing so. Please see the guidelines.

As a brand new member, I'd also recommend you at least introduce yourself in either the "Hello My Name Is" topic or our Train Tech Registry if you are a train fan as this is your first post.

In regard to your question, you can always check Ebay or BrickLink to get an idea of your set's value.

@ Gifinim : Thx for the link, hadnt heard of the site bricklink. Seems like the set is listed for that price but hasnt sold yet. In the past there havent been any similar sales, neither on ebay.

@TheBrickster : sorry for not following the strict forum rules, didnt know where to post the question. I thought you guys would be excited that somebody found a rare lego set and is willing to sell it for the right price...

Hmm, a 'rare' LEGO set, we all have loads of such a 'rare' LEGO sets. I like the 7740 very much. Have had one since I was a child! Some years ago we had a very good deal at Ebay (actually my cousin did, but I went with him to pick it up), a 7740 plus more train stuff like a working red motor. was for about 100€ I think, really a good deal, the people were even amazed it went for 100€ at Ebay... We left them with the illusion, in order not to disappoint them :)

Sit down and have a look at this

Of course there is no guarantee someone will pay that much for it!

Yeah that seller has a habit of listing stuff at prices which will put off most buyers, though he has a bunch of very rare stock. Trying to sell on eBay for such a rare item might not get a good price either.

Not sure how to take that, but I do this to keep the forum from becoming a spam fest/market place and free of the kiddies. As I said before, I encourage you to introduce yourself - that always helps others to get to know you and share your intent in joining a new forum. In any case, I left your topic open in the place that it was posted rather than moving it to our question topic so that you'd know it was still here. I did change the topic title so it doesn't read like an Ebay listing (eg. MISB, etc.).

All: please resume normal discussion - thanks.

Hi,

first of all, congratzlation for getting your hans on a "new" 7740. But I am a little confused.

Isn´t Selling a gift, which is meant for your child (even unborn), not the same as stealing? According to your post, it sounds just like your just entrusted with the 7740 and not the owner. I would be glad to be proven wrong.

It's not a matter of Legal, but more of Ethics. It's a matter between him and his grandparents who are much likely not aware of how much the set could be worth. You do not know what he is about to use that money for. And perhaps his grandparents would endorse selling the set, if he gains some extra money for his family.

Conclusion still: Matter between him and his grandparents.
