Brick Miner Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 i saw this on ebay earlier this week, but didn't mention it here as i was considering buying it... ebay auction listing but now that i've decided against it (condition is too poor), i have some questions... has anyone ever seen this before ??? i thought LEGO only recently started making store displays, and the seller lists a date of 1993 ??? how strange. where would these displays have appeared. i don't ever remember seeing one when i was a kid... and i shopped at TRU, target, kmart, KBtoys, etc... bricklink can't confirm this displays existance either. bricklink retail displays. what value do these type of things usually realize ??? any insight into the mystery of retail store displays is appriciated X-D - BrickMiner
Grrr Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 I have seen store displays like that here in NZ since the early 90's. (the earliest one I can remember is from the islanders in the pirate theme). They seemed to come in two sizes - the small ones were around the size pictured, generally about 45x60cm and about 30cm tall - and would sit on a shelf/table amougst the sets. The other type were around 120x80cm and were freestanding, though the base of the model would be around 50cm off the floor. The surrounds were always yellow and generally had lego and the theme's logo's on them. The models were glued and generally had basic levels of motorization (ie some small parts spun etc). From what I understand they never became the property of the store and went back to TLG once the store had done with them - hence why you don't see/here much about them now. I have seen them come up for sale from time to time (only the small ones mind) - they generally sell for around $50 US - but considering they are glued and often yellowed from sitting under a flourecent light for a long time, I don't think they are worth that. Particularly as they have often drilled through some parts for lighting and motorization cabling.
phoinix Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 the first store-display i can remember is of classic-space back in the 80s!! Its at a toy store in Nicosia-Cyprus where i used to get lego as a kid.. the store no longer has lego but they still have that beayteful display (that they wont sell..I have asked them twice and they said someone offered about 4000 euro but they didnt sell)
Jipay Posted January 12, 2007 Posted January 12, 2007 As stated, displays existed before. And bricklink can't keep track of all the displays as some of them are unique for each country. Some other displays are specificaly done for one single shop. So that leaves a lot options ! *sweet*
Brick Miner Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 thanks for the info guys... i wonder, did these ever exists in the states in the 90's ??? as i said, i don't recall seeing them until the past couple years... however, this WW display is definitely US, as it says "wild west", and not "western" in its logo. its possible these items are only from hobby shops. -------------------------------------------------- they generally sell for around $50 USlooks like this one got a bid of 75 USD, but the reserve wasn't met. i'd pay a couple hundred for a mint one, but not 4000 !!!- BrickMiner
mutley777 Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Brick miner Thanks for the retail display link as i never noticed them on BL before. I just had to buy a star wars lego banner :-D
Minifig Lecturer Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 The Arnotts shop here used to have a big LEGO exhibition with many layouts in all the themes each Christmas . Was great. I went to ones in late 1980s and early 1990s. Think they died out around the time classic stuff died and now Arnotts don't bother with LEGO at all anymore like the other big stores :-(

xenologer Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 On the Topic of Displays: How do the Displays at Lego Shops go? I know there are some definetly 'official' ones(official sets propped up to look nice), and they seem to get broken into Brick Grab-Bags when they're done. But every once in a while at the Lego Shop I'll see some that are apparently fan-made displays, for example Once I saw a cool mini-classic space diorama credited to 'Brick Stackers club' or something like that... Anyone know how those get in there? and who owns them? I mean... is it some activity where you can approach TLC, and they'll give you all the parts you need to produce a display for them?(sounds like it'd be a fun gig to get into... especially if they let you keep anything...) :-D
Norro Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 :-D :-D :-D i don't trust anyone with a pocket book that is possibly bigger than mine ;-) - BrickMiner I am just picturing myself living by this rule, and hiding in some remote location... X-D God Bless, Nathan BTW the custom displays are normally made by LUGs, you see the announcements on Lugnet fairly frequently. The parts belong to the members and the display is returned.

CopMike Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 xenologer - Me & RAS made a Endor Bunker Display out of our own pieces and the shop contributed with a 7657 AT-ST. The display itself used to be for Duplo 4960 Giant Zoo which the shop had two of so we got that on - ripped out the Duplo and put in our instead. It now sits on the LEGO SW-shelf in the shop and the kids go crazy X-D! We
xenologer Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Cool I guess its just you donating your time? not an employee or contractor or paid in any way. Or even 'on the books' offiically, just an agreement with the specific store manager? Nice model, btw where did you find that Clear! Treasure Chest piece? I guess it must be a Space Pirate's Treasure...
Zaktan of the Shadows Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 No, I have not seen it. But my brother said he saw something similar -ZotS
