Heroica RPG - Quest#52: Tower of Doom

[Endgame]

The Darkstar once again tries to pull at my mind, but I drive off the foul words. The infatuating voice of the Darkstar was lost in a sea of my own whispers - the biggest of which being, of course, Sorrow. However, even though I no longer showed it, my death still replayed dutifully in the back of my psyche, always reminding about what I was - but I wouldn't allow it to tell me who I was.

"Syntax. Get a grip."

I nearly doubled back - wasn't it normally I who was saying that? Am I really slipping?

Although the Darkstar was not fully taking control, it was changing me into something even more ugly then I usually am. I take a deep breath in, allowing the elf's words process. I fix my posture, my normally crooked frame standing tall. I relax and spread out my shoulders, and unsheathe my fan. I spread my feet out and face my enemy. Had Nerwen been listening to the "natural rhythm of the world", or whatever she did, she would notice my "disharmonies" subside then nearly vanish - replaced by a simple but sorrowful rhythm.

The Darkstar once again tries to tempt Maurice from his Holy path, and once again fails. The party pile on Wither, with Guts landing the final blow on the strange-looking Inquisitor. Nerwen gets a rare outing with her mace, and makes the Dark General Fragile. He has nowhere to run, and nowhere to hide.

But Guts stands firm, and Mizuki gets the final blow on the Dark General, who crumples to the ground, and drops his Darkstar-powered Scythe. It breaks in two, and the gem itself rolls off.

Guts smirks as he buries his blade in the chest of the red abomination, and moments later, sees Mizuki finishing off Haroka. The raider quickly walks over, falls to a knee by the corpse of the general, and without hesistation, takes Haroka's head off with a single chop with Lifestealer. With the head in his hand, he stands back up. Casually wiping the blood off Lifestealer onto the general's beard, and sheathing the blade, Guts sees the gem, the Darkstar, and picks it up. He says:

"I always thought it would be smaller, and... darker. It looks like the gems in the sealed tomb of Haroka, remember? Hm, anyway, we did well, Haroka was a murderer. We stopped him in his tracks before his Scourge could really begin. I hope this city can recover..."

The raider puts the gem in one of his pockets. Guts takes a single look at the loot, and says:

"Mizuki, take the Top hat, Nagure the hammer, Nerwen the staff. If you feel slighted in the portion of loot you have received, let me know and your suggestion for how to do it differently."

The raider takes a green bottle filled with wine from his belt, and says:

"I've been saving this one for a special occasion. Charissian Rouge, a good year. Don't have glasses, but what the hell."

Guts uncorks the bottle and takes a sip, handing the bottle for someone else.

I take a few steps back and look at the scene around me. Blaohoel was nothing but a dead pile of gills... Floodgate too was a crumpled heap. Wither lays in the debri dead, and even Haroka himself was vanquished, his giant corpse in the center of all this calamity.

"Keep the Darkstar away from the Essence of Sorrow. The darkstar has revived someone before, has it not? Wouldn't surprise me if it does it again."

The party pause in the rubble of the Tyrant's Tower, savouring their victory against Haroka and his Inquisitors. They hear movement from behind them, and whirl around, to see Ismelda and Hergrit carefully picking their way through the ruins.

"A nasty end for a nasty man!" says Ismelda in her blunt way.

"This is the sort of thing that was in the water!" said Hergrit, looking at the remains of Blaohoel disdainfully. "Hopefully now we will have fish again!"

"You have set our city free, heroes. Miranda will forever be in your debt. You have killed the tyrant and his closest warmongers, vanquished the Sisterhood and the corrupt Miranda Guardsmen. I can forgive you turning my kitchen into an inferno!

I hope you realise the enormity of what you have accomplished this day. Go in peace, with our thanks and gratitude!"

The party head towards the glade where they had been dropped off by Byverion. The doorway popped into existence once again, and they opened it and climbed in.

Hlin was delighted that Vres and Laxadaisi were safe, and the Maginastra greeted them warmly.

"Heroes, you have returned! I trust your mission was a success? Vres and Laxadaisi have told me how you freed them."

"It was indeed a success. The Tower has fallen, General Haroka is dead, as you can see." Guts holds up the head. "Two things, before we are off. One, Haroka mentioned the Tower was given to him. Add to that your mention of your kind of folk being behind magic appearing buildings, and that makes me think one of your former colleagues is a traitor, do with that as you will. Secondly, what will happen to the Seamonster we summoned?"

"And what shall we do with the ashes of Haroka's "lover?" I say we just tie a weight o the bottle and catapult it into the ocean, but who knows..."

"I certainly picked the right heroes for the job, then! Good work, all. Very well done. As for your suspicions, this is indeed troubling news. The sudden appearance of the Tower had the hallmarks of my erstwhile employers, but as I said before, we are sworn not to interfere in the affairs of your realm. My infraction in Ve'er was enough to get me indefinitely suspended. To think that one of the Council of the Watchful Eye could be a traitor... It is unheard of.

How did my little sea creature do? I bet he was an impressive sight to behold as he smote that accursed Tower. I would loved to have seen it. Kjorfalneire will head out to the middle of the ocean, he won't be a bother to anyone. Maybe I will enlist Heroica's help again in recapturing the beastie, but he's certainly earned a little bit of freedom after being in those Amulets for so long."

QM Note: I'd like Chromeknight to present the vial, if possible. Meanwhile you can all swap your equipment back over, I'll sort out the 200 gold piece reward, and I can put up the final stats and have you back in Eubric just in time for Wren to destroy it

As for the leviathan, unless you know heroes that can walk on the sea bed swim like fishes, I expect he is out of reach.
