AmperZand Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) @8BrickMario I'm using a combination of three methods: CM4S's back light, feel and dots. I maneuver a small part to the bottom centre of the packet and shine a light through to identify the part. Most of the time, that tells me right away what the minifig is. If the part is one from two minifigures such as the mug, I feel for other parts such as the grandad's newspaper or check the dots. The librarian has a distinctive set of three dots arranged triangularly on the right side; the grandad doesn't have that. I find the combo method faster than any single method alone. I'm calling the combined approach DoLF (Dots, Light & Feel) and the act of doing it DoLFing! Edited May 1, 2013 by AmperZand Quote

Artifex Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 From Lego's Facebook page just now: LEGO The LEGO Minifigures Series 10 has landed and with it comes a golden opportunity! The super rare Mr. Gold minifigure, has wandered off to several mysterious places and only those with the Midas touch will find him. RenesisX Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Cleared out a Target today when they opened at 8am. Had a hell of a job persuading them to sell me the whole lot. I thought it would be 2 boxes of 60. I didn't know they were doing single hanging boxes of 120 now. It was a sealed case. They wouldn't let me have the case. They said they had to put the empty case up on display. Weird. Quote

I found another fresh case at a local Meijer store and got to feel through the whole case, no Mr. Gold so I just snagged the lone Medusa since it was the third time I noticed she was only one per case. I've hit up 5 different Targets over the course of the past couple weeks and 4 of the 5 times they just dropped the whole box of 120 into my cart - cardboard sleeve, display, figures and all. I took the display twice. Gave one away today to a guy I met at the Lego Store. Guess it just depends on the store / employee you get. Most of the Targets in my area don't use the endcap display anyway. They hang the figures on pegs on an endcap. And I have reached my search limit of 1,000 packets searched looking for Mr. Gold. I can now officially give up. Although, if I happen to be in Target or Toys-R-Us and they have a sealed box, I'll probably give 'em a search anyhoo. - MJ Edited May 1, 2013 by MicroJow Quote

I only kept a set of 16 plus a few extras. I didn't open any of them, just gave them the 'ol touchy-feelie to see which figure was in them. - MJ Quote

8BrickMario Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 (edited) I went to my local LEGO store and eveyone was gathered around the bin of S10s. Everyone (my friend and I included) was finding minifigures that other people needed. After a short while, my friend and I were the only searchers. We had a time limit, and there were about 300 (or it seemed like it) minifigures, so if there was a Mr. Gold, we didn't find him. That Tomahawk Warrior is the bane of my Mr. Gold-searching existence! I got a Trendsetter, a Decorator, a Librarian, a Revolutionary Soldier,a Bumblebee Girl, and a Sea Captain. Paris, the Librarian, and the Decorator are my favorites. I like that Hilton's chihuahua can fit beside her on the stand. Cool things to do with the Decorator for playability: Take the medium azure cylinder off the handle and swap it out for dark gray (clean roller). Put a light gray stud in the mouth of the bucket and remove handle (paint can, but could be a cookie jar in other scenarios). I wish there was a 1x1 round tile in Medium Azure (same as cylinder' color) to put in the bucket for paint to add even more playability! Unfortunately, the piece does not exist in this color. I took the display twice. Gave one away today to a guy I met at the Lego Store. Guess it just depends on the store / employee you get. Damn. I hit up like 5 Targets over the last few weeks (some of them multiple times) and not one of them would sell them before 1st May. Target made a mistake by allowing the tills to ring up the sales before May 1st. Anyway, I went to another Target tonight and cleared them out. They let me take the display box and the outer carton this time. Most of the Targets in my area don't use the endcap display anyway. They hang the figures on pegs on an endcap. Exactly! The manager that wouldn't give me the box had me help her remove all the Series 9 from the pegs on the endcaps so she could put up the empty display box. Weird. I'd never found the minifigures in that store before - they were in the camping/hiking section. I don't know why. No wonder they still had dozens of Series 9 left. And I have reached my search limit of 1,000 packets searched looking for Mr. Gold. I can now officially give up. Although, if I happen to be in Target or Toys-R-Us and they have a sealed box, I'll probably give 'em a search anyhoo. Ah man, I feel for ya. The odds were well in your favor - from people's very, very rough calculations it looks like maybe 1 Mr Gold per 600-1000 packets. Quote
RenesisX Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Might be a -bit- off topic, but I just discovered a really good way on finding out which minifigure you've gotten. Put the front of the pack on top of a small (doesn't matter what size) but bright light. On the back, that little flab, fold it over. The middle part will be completely see through and you can see the contents of the bag. Might help a few of you guys with Mr. Gold... This is great, thank you! I didn't want to do the feel method on them in case there was a Mr Gold and I scratched the hell out of him. This works great with my uber LED torch behind them. Although I keep accidentally blinding myself. Quote

The odds were well in your favor - from people's very, very rough calculations it looks like maybe 1 Mr Gold per 600-1000 packets. What? This odds are ridicously low! Lego produces 400 million minifigures in 2013, half of which would be collectible. One third of which will be in S10. So you have 5000 Mr. Gold over 65 million, making them 1 out of 13000. How the hell did you think that was so easy??? Quote
8BrickMario Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 (edited) About the Decorator: I realized that a 1x1 round tile will not fit in the bucket properly! So correction: I wish the STUD (not tile, stud) was made in the same color as the roller's cylinder and the paint splashes on the Decorator. Edited May 2, 2013 by 8BrickMario Quote

AmperZand Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 My only question with this method is where to get a light to see the pieces in stores. I bought a sealed box and took them home. I've been using a torch in an otherwise dark room. Works a treat! I'll be keeping most of the S10s or trading them with fellow AFOLs (including one who also posts at EB). The rest I'll return to the store I bought them from. I'll be leaving an indication of what each packet contains if the store's staff want or removing them if they don't. Quote

RenesisX Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I tried but the leaflet is always in the way. You give up too easy. Did 60 packets with the light method last night. Just push the leaflet and base to one side. Takes 2 seconds. Quote
Basteq Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 I made a 200km round trip to look for Mr. Gold today. After another around 16 boxes (1000 figures) still nothing. Depressing :( Quote
