NiceMarmot Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Wow! I might have to go build that SD. Really nice job on that one. Like the others have said, I think you totally nailed the proportions perfectly. Quote
Metallic11 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Now that is a set I would definitely buy Quote
ISDAvenger Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 That ISD is absolutely awesome! Well done sir! Quote
Legofin2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 WOW, awesome, can't wait to see today's!! Quote
Praiter Yed Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Nice to see you doing this again - looking good so far, but the Star Destroyer is definitely the highlight at the moment - so sleek Quote
Wedge09 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Wow, this last model is absolutely the best so far, I love it :wub_drool: As lightingtiger says Brick'on Brickdoctor Quote
Bricktooth Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Wow, what an excellent MOC! How the hell did you manage to build it so accurate in such a small scale? Now I have an urge to build the Executor in scale to this, which is probably impossible for me, even in LDD. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted December 5, 2012 Author Posted December 5, 2012 We must accelerate our plans. Begin landing Day Five. My lord, is that Midi-scale MTT? I wouldn't say that this was a tough as the Gungan Sub, but... wow. I don't think I realized before how many angles the MTT mixes with curves. The nose of the vehicle is a jumble of hinges and bricks at different angles. I ended up adopting a layered plate approach, adding actual angled or curved parts only where it was obvious that the 'real' thing was significantly angled or curved. It's sort of a simplified shape, but I like the way it turned out, and I think it manages to avoid the sort of unrefined look of some of TLG's models (usually of Star Destroyers) that use the stacked plates technique. The Multi-Troop Transport (MTT) was a heavy repulsorlift vehicle used by both the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems to transport B1 battle droids and Droidekas prior to and during the Clone Wars... DFOL Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Wow, i'm thorougly impressed by these MOCs Brickdoctor! Especially the ISD is probably the best midi-scale rendition i have seen to date, would love to see it made in the brick some day! Quote
Oky Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Nice job on the angles and details, Doc. You certainly have an eye for these things. But for some reason I can't help but think of a brown, gun-toting Jabba when looking at that model. Quote
swils Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Doc, I don't know how you do it, but I love it. I kinda-sorta went very broke last year before I could actually buy the pieces to construct *any* of the models, which really disappointed me, heh. I was so very distraught that as soon as I had some spending money again, I went and overcompensated by buying a UCS Shuttle instead Maybe I'll piece together an ISD when I finally go home later this month using whatever colors of bricks I've got. Looking forward to the rest of the month! Quote
Brickdoctor Posted December 7, 2012 Author Posted December 7, 2012 But for some reason I can't help but think of a brown, gun-toting Jabba when looking at that model. Argh, now I all want to do is take a big brown Jabba with a gun and drop him on today's model. Doc, I don't know how you do it, but I love it. The UCS Shuttle's basically a really big version of what I considered to be the best model in the '11 calendar, so I can't say I disagree with the decision. I look forward to seeing it in physical bricks. Day Six. It's an invasion army. Midi-scale OOM Security Droid is an odd move for the Trade Federation. On the bright side, it's better than last year's battle droid. I. Hate. Miniland. Battle. Droids. OOM security battle droids were security droids of the Trade Federation and Confederacy of Independent Systems used for the purposes of defense and detection... Masked Builder Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Doc, I am please to see your excellent work again this year. You never cease to amaze. I don't like the droids either, I think that Star Destroyer is my favorite so far! Quote
Only Sinner Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I would like to see the miniland battle droid get hit by a train (LEGO, of course). Would someone from the train side of intrest possibly arrange this? That would make for a merry Christmas. Quote
Oky Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Argh, now I all want to do is take a big brown Jabba with a gun and drop him on today's model. I hope you didn't take it the wrong way when I coupled it with my funny in the blog post. It's TLC's MTT that looks like poop, not yours. As for Day 6, I actually quite like it. It's a vast improvement over last year's battle droid in my opinion. However, I'd maybe get rid of the cheese slope which makes the neck look too thick. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted December 8, 2012 Author Posted December 8, 2012 I hope you didn't take it the wrong way when I coupled it with my funny in the blog post. It's TLC's MTT that looks like poop, not yours. As for Day 6, I actually quite like it. It's a vast improvement over last year's battle droid in my opinion. However, I'd maybe get rid of the cheese slope which makes the neck look too thick. No, I knew what you were saying. The problem is that the 'real' battle droid has a neck that leans backwards, and at the same time, I couldn't think of another legal connection that would allow me to attack the head to the shoulders while allowing the head to tilt forwards. Without the cheese slope there, the shoulders transition to the neck too abruptly and the neck looks like it's coming out up from the back instead of leaning back from the shoulders. We have a plan which should immobilize the Droid Army. We will send Day Seven to knock out the Droid control ship which is orbiting the planet. If Midi-scale N-1 Starfighter can get past their rayshields, we can sever communications and their droids will be helpless. I started out really fast on this one, but it got tougher than it looked. I'd built a minifig-scale N-1 before in LDD, so I had an idea of where to start, but I ran into difficulty with the engines and the size as a whole. I couldn't make the cones of the engines 1-wide, or this would turn out closer to mini-scale. But the main portion of the engine needed to be thicker than the cones. If the cones were 2-wide, the main part couldn't be 3-wide, because then it'd look closer to minifig scale. (for comparison, the official N-1 set from '99 used 3-wide engines) I settled with what I've got above, the same technique I used for the Y-wing in last year's advent calendar remake. It worked well there, but the Y-wing is obviously more angular and greebled than the N-1. I'm still not satisfied with the overall blockiness of this model, but I think it captures the feel of the craft with simplified shapes, a compromise often unavoidable in this scale. Reference material is here. The Naboo Royal N-1 starfighter, sometimes known simply as the Naboo starfighter, was a starfighter used by the government of Naboo during the late years of the Galactic Republic and early days of the Galactic Empire for defense, patrol, and escort duties... Brickdoctor Posted December 9, 2012 Author Posted December 9, 2012 Day Eight, straight ahead. It's the one crawling with Midi-scale Vulture Droids. I apologize for the late post (in fact it's no longer Day Eight where I live); I was away from my computer for longer than I thought I would be. This model reminds me of last year's A-wing in that it's a starfighter and it's shapes are extremely hard to simplify into something I can work with, but it's small enough that even at this increased scale, there just aren't that many options. At this size, I decided to basically use reference pictures as a starting point and build using whatever shapes looked right to me and seemed to capture the feel of the ship rather than try to get things perfectly accurate. In the end, I'm happy with the result. One note: the curved slope for the 'head' in dark brown is in a 2013 set, but BL does have the inventory up so I'm all but certain it exists or will exist. It's the only shade of brown that piece is available in, but I decided to use it because it was the best shape for the job. (and I think the different shade of brown helps break up the monotonous color scheme of the model) The Variable Geometry Self-Propelled Battle Droid, Mark I (also known as the Vulture-class droid starfighter or simply as the Vulture droid) was a droid starfighter used by the Trade Federation. Later, in much greater numbers, it was utilized by the Confederacy of Independent Systems... Read more. 2012StarWarsAdvent_Day8.lxf Quote
Brickdoctor Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 Set your course for Day Nine. General Veers, prepare your Midi-scale Imperial Officers. I don't think there were any cold assault Imperial officers in the Hoth diorama of Miniland at LEGOLAND, so I took a look at a picture of the officers on the landing platform in the Endor section. That was a good starting point, but I ended up redoing the whole figure. I made his legs a little longer and more distinct from his torso and, of course, worked in the body armor. The helmet's not perfect, but it was the best solution of the ones I tried. Overall, this is the first time in a while (probably since last year's Miniland-scale Nute Gunray, Day 2) that I've been satisfied with a Miniland-scale figure that I essentially built myself from scratch, and I'm happy with the model. I chose to make this figure with just the chinstrap and no goggles, but if you want those, you can add a couple tan headlight bricks in place of the 1x2 brick in the face and place some transparent tiles on those. The officer was a high class soldier within the Empire's military who provided a commanding presence among the legions of stormtroopers that were deployed to fight the Emperor's enemies...
