What a gorgeous looking set. It's next on my Supercar shopping list. I have 853/956 and 8860, so this is the next logical step, followed by 8880. I also have 8448 & 8070, so I really want to fill that 2 set gap in my supercars!

You should be able to get a cheap copy on BrickLink. This is by far the least expensive "Super Car" I've got.

Mine arrived yesterday. The box is in really good shape and the pieces look really clean!

Not sure whether to do this one first or the Space Shuttle I got a few days earlier (having since cleaned up all the pieces).

Just finished putting together an almost immaculate 8880 which is a really cool build and looks pretty solid next to my 8448

After discovering my Shuttle was missing some key pieces I decided to build the 8865. What a retro experience - it was interesting to see the introduction of some more "modern" pieces since 8860, and yet also how far things had come with 8880. A really pleasant build and nice to put together such an old set.

Sorry to bump and old post, i did just build it. but the gearing dont Work :( position 1.2 and 3, my Wheels are "locked" what did i do wrong? :(

While building, did you check if all bricks and plates are aligned perfectly, and if all axles and gears are able to rotate without friction?

Due to the numbers of involved axles and gears, even small amounts of friction accumulate, and may result in a drivetrain that stucks.

Just my 2 ct: 8865 has still the best out-of-the-box suspension of all supercars - not to stiff, not to weak... (only the 8466 can compete but not out of the box but only after applying the MODs of designer Han and the shock absorbers of the 8110 Unimog)....

My overall verdict for the 8865: Ugly ;) but in all other criterias a "perfect" ** model - it represents what Lego technic should be...

** "perfect" is related to the term model and means the features and the building fun and the overall concept... of course this set has its flaws, but apart from these ******* 1st generation black pins (which give you sore fingers) all flaws are IMO aesthetical ones (track width, under-dimensioned wheels, flimsy seats)

My favourite model, I do like the jeep more however as a teenager at high school, I remember playing with this on very long wall up to my Grandad’s watching the independent  suspension and engine working and loving it. The gearbox was great and I loved the pop up lights. Like I said, the second model was my favourite.  It made me buy 8880 supercar plus many other models

I have made two homages to models which can be seen here

I followed the same length and width of the original jeep model, both models have a full running gear with 3 dif’s, 5+r gearbox, macpherson front suspension, fake v8 and a live axle. Even the steering has the same ratio. Even though they look similar, they each only share about 15% of the same parts :@)

I had it as teenager, and after recovering my Lego piees from my parents home I started all over again. A lot of pieces where missing, so I bought another set in the Bay, cheap and incomplete, but between borth I think I will beable to make it.

I am rediscovering Lego Technic all over again, and purchased some recent fits, but my head is still in the "old language" of the classic sets with struts.

I love this set. Regarding minimum age, I got it and built it when I was 6 and I'm no genius.
