CMP Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 My plans were 1: Lord of the Rings and 2: The Hobbit. Stage 2 is commencing as we speak. I usually don't stray out of my plans for the year, but I did pick up the Desert Skiff and a lot more CMFs than I intended. Quote
Crownie Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) I returned from my Dark Ages in 2012, so I'm afraid I didn't really have any plans - I just bought what I thought looked awesome whenever I had money. Not really the best approach, so one of my goals for 2013 is to be far more organized and funnel my LEGO spending into several specific areas. I've even drawn up a spreadsheet, lol. glendo Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 i came out of my dark ages in 2011, so that year was the year of awakening and enjoyment, 2012 was my true year of discovery. i know so much more about this Lego universe now than what i did 12months ago. I have also had the privilege of going to 2 Legoland parks this year. 2013 will be my Lego year of maturity... i know what i want to do, and so far i know what i want to get. i started being a star wars collector and have ended up buying Modulars and City lego... 2013: spend wisely, build more, enjoy what you have Quote
Crownie Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) 2013: spend wisely, build more, enjoy what you have I quite like that, glendo. Seeing it put so simply is a great reminder - I have a lot more LEGO this year than I did last, and I don't want to get so far ahead of myself that I forget to enjoy everything 2012 has brought me - like an account on Eurobricks! Andy D Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 2013: spend wisely, build more, enjoy what you have That's a great plan for 2013! One many of us could look at, and try to follow. Andy D Quote
Rumble Strike Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 My backlog recently hit over 50 sets, and I have a feeling that I am just collecting 'stuff' because it's on sale. I am pleased with what I have built for the Heroica RPG but I do have to try some more modern things out. I have ideas, I just never seem to get round to them. Therefore I am also adopting the 'Buy less, build more' slogan. Thanks for an interesting topic, it's great to see this discussion. Quote
Kristel Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 2013: spend wisely, build more, enjoy what you have Great motto / advice for anyone I think. I would like to adopt this as my motto for the coming year. If you don't have any objections, I will add it to my signature. The "spend wisely" part will, of course, be thrown out the window if I win the lottery. Quote

Nicker Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 I pretty much have my spending plans laid out at least up to August 2013. I plan on waiting until the Hobbit sets go on sale to purchase them all. I will be collecting series 9, 10 and 11 mini figs. I also plan on purchasing all 5 of the new Kingdoms sets that are rumored for release in August as long as they are up to snuff with the previous ones which I'm sure they will be. I was focusing on buying pieces for building in 2012 but I think 2013 will be more of a set collecting year. Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 I have a backlog of 60 boxes so I don't feel so bad now. My backlog is only 30 boxes. Andy D Do you two mean unopened boxes - sets you bought but still haven't opened? I have well over a hundred of those, some of them from as much as ten or eleven years ago (some older Star Wars sets from near the beginning of the theme, plus a couple Adventurers - Orient Expedition sets). Yikes! Quote

Yikes! Yes, these are unopened boxes, (sets) that I do plan to either build or just part out. Uhoh, I did a recount and it's more like 40 boxes, but seeing as you have over 100, I still don't feel so bad about my backlog. Andy D Edited December 14, 2012 by Andy D Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 I have well over a hundred of those, some of them from as much as ten or eleven years ago... Yikes! Glad I'm not not the only one... I think I need to do a recount to add in this year, haven't counted since Oct. 2011. I wonder what 100+ sets equal in build time... Quote

Rumble Strike Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 I just feel that instead of spending more money on Lego, even if it is a good price, I'm now at a point where I need to get that backlog down. So I'm definitely doing that next year. Quote
legomr Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Hmm, I like "less spending more building", but to really get that to work, I might have to modify it to "no spending, more building" for myself. Otherwise, even the prospect to buy a little bit is simply going to sabotage my new year's resolution. Quote

Otherwise, even the prospect to buy a little bit is simply going to sabotage my new year's resolution. The "no spending" would be very, very hard (almost impossible) for me, too many good things on the horizon, LEGO-wise. The best I can hope for is "moderation in spending" and getting organized. Well, the get organized part has started, I was able to spend 2 hours yesterday sorting, and I hope to spend a similar amount today and more when I can carve out a couple of hours here and there until done. The hardest part is a cataloging system. Maybe for 2013 I will just try to "stay organized and build more" Andy D Quote
Paul B Technic Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 My plans did not work out so well, I ended up selling all my Technic off twice only to buy it all back. Quote

LEGO Guy Bri Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 What does 100+ sets equal in display space? Andy D Around 103 sq.ft. (9.5 sq.m.) give or take. A very crowded, uncomfortable area... Quote
Andy D Posted December 20, 2012 Author Posted December 20, 2012 Around 103 sq.ft. (9.5 sq.m.) give or take. A very crowded, uncomfortable area... Is this from experience or estimte? Andy D Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Experience; my old LEGO room is 18ft 9in x 5ft 6in with a roof, floor, and walls forming a right triangle. All those have been packed up, in the storage bins behind the unopened sets. It was too crowded to add more sets that would all one day need moving. I didn't want to keep my unopened sets or used sets, unable to be displayed, left in my cold/hot attic. Every set I own is stacked now in that closet. Quote
Andy D Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 (edited) I figured a way to work on my backlog. My wife and I are going on a 14 day cruise for New Years, that's 10 "at sea days" with no ports, and I don't do trivea contests or learn napkin folding or shuffle board (bored). So I've decided to take a couple of sets waiting to be built and build, then MOC. that should occupy some of those 10 "at sea days" I recently put together the PoP 7571, Fight For The Dagger and was liking the colors so much that I decidecd to take the 7573, Battle of Alamut (well 2 copies) and do a MOC with them. Wish me luck with all the motion of he ship! Andy D Edited December 24, 2012 by Andy D Quote
Rumble Strike Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Battle of Alamut is a lovely set, you'll have a great time building it - big box though, surprised you are taking two on a cruise! Quote
Andy D Posted December 24, 2012 Author Posted December 24, 2012 (edited) Battle of Alamut is a lovely set, you'll have a great time building it - big box though, surprised you are taking two on a cruise! Not taking the boxes, just the bags. Also, we do not have to fly to the port city, so extra suit cases are not a problem. The only reason I am taking 2 is because I have a MOC planned and I want to make sure I have all the parts I need. Yeah, I know I could challenge myself to use a smaller quantity of parts, but the 10 "at sea dys" have me concerned about boredom. When we go on a cruise it usually for he ports, not the "at sea days". Surpriingly my wife doesn't think I'm nuts with my LEGO building plans for the trip. I'll post my results when I return in mid January. Andy D Edited December 24, 2012 by Andy D Quote
