"Not exactly much left living for for you to heal me up Paladin. Smith's gone and with it my cut of the fortune, no idea where he bugged off to though."

The sorcerer grimaced as he sucked in his breath.

"Can't you tell? Rust to Gold, all it took was a little intuition, a little thievery, some brains, and the guts to pull it off. Sure the stuff breaks back down into rust eventually, but if you feed it into circulation a little bit at a time, no one's the wiser. Smith had a good pile put away too, though it didn't sound like he was ever in it for the gold. He seemed to think that this was the "time" to do it and it had to be done. That Eubric was ripe for such an undertaking, that forces elsewhere were building to tear the city apart and that he was going to do his part to contribute. Ah well, it at least provided me with a better job than doing cheap tricks in the Hovels."

Ellaria steps up to speak to Drake.

"Ah, you must be an officer serving under the Bonapartes? We are heroes of Heroica - with very high reputation among your faction, mind you - and we caught these men forging gold out of scrap metal with magic. Granted, they haven't been quite successful about it, but they have been on the business for quite a while, so many people have gotten tricked, I fear. Also, their leader, who goes under the monicker of J. Smith, managed to escape from us. I guess he has gone to his employer, as he didn't look bright enough to have come up with this scheme himself."

"Oh I remember you very well lad and if ya want to try tussling again with a whole detatchment, be my guest. I do my best to keep the new recruits on a pretty tight leash, but you know how it goes. Now then, we stopped in at the Harbor Master's office after recovering from that rowe and found the place a regular red sandbox. The master was drowing his sorrows in a bottle of mead and kept mumbling about heroes and warehouse 3. Naturally we came to investigate after stopping off for more support and here we find this. Counterfitters it sounds like and it appears they've wormed their coin into nearly every ship and warehouse surrounding the port, as the Harbor Master can probably attest to."

OoC: Why can't I recognize these NPCs from the get-go? I thought this was some new character, but apparently not...

"You can take these men away, Sergeant. We will chase after J. Smith."

Ellaria takes out her magic compass, and prays that it shows the way to the escaped criminal.

Posted

"It's as the girl said, Sergeant. Their leader did make it away. If you still think he is nearby, we can try to give chase, if not, at the very least he'll need a new crew before he does anymore damage."

"I'm pretty sure that's the case, I doubt he'll be showing his face around here again for some time. We've got a name, if you could give us a description we'll be toting the rest of these no-gooders over to the town watch and alert them to the trouble. If it's involving shipping and matters of trade we've got no problem looking into it, but I think this is the part where they'll take over for now."

Drake signals to the bombardiers accompanying him to haul the rest of the thugs off. Ellaria checks her compass, it wobbles back and forth pointing briefly at the side-door to the warehouse (which isn't exactly news to the heroes) and then continues swiveling in circles.

"He wears a tricorne and pretty simple clothes. His face is permanently in a sneer. He's a pretty plain fellow, to be honest, and you might have a hard time tracking him down. If you do find him, tell us." Boomingham checks the cloak he was meant to return to see if any of the gold remains. If it does, he pockets it and turns over the cloak. If it is all sand, he still turns over the cloak. "This cloak belonged to him. May help in the search. And now, officers, if that's all you have for us, I think we'll be on our merry way."

"Permanent sneer huh? Your right, probably will be hard to find in a city as depressing as this one, but we'll make sure the Town Watch is informed. Also, we'll see to it that Heroica learns of it, should their help be needed in the future involving the crook. Right now, I think we can safely say you put an end to their operations here."

Boomingham turns the cloak over, but all of the gold has unfortunately turned to dust.

Where will the Party go now?

You've got a few locations you could stop at, but if you'd like to return to the hall let me know, with J. Smith having escaped we're just about done.

"Well, friends, I say we make two stops. First to tell the priest he doesn't need to watch his back, and collect that gold he promised us, and then off to the Grumpkin to tell him that his brother has at least been revenged and that he should be safe from here on in."

Posted

Boomingham shakes his head sadly. "We haven't got a lead. He left a while ago, and Eubric is an enormous city. The Bonaparte guards were out there- he must have had a more clever way to get out. I'll keep going if you've got an bright ideas, Ellaria, but when it comes down to it sometimes you can't waste resources, and that includes time, on a lost cause. Sometimes you just keep going and face the next injustice. I'd like to get him, but we've got nothing left as a clue."

Posted

"I guess you're right, Lawrence... Let us visit the priest. He should be alright now, since nobody really cared about the cloak in the end anyway."

The heroes make their way back to the cathedral. Priests hurry back and forth in preparation for some upcoming event, tradesman and craftspeople bring their wares into the open air market just inside the court, and traders and merchants walk in and out with their offerings to Mercutio. The heroes find Spinnetus at his room.

"Ah heroes, good to see you. I pray everything went well?"

"Well, we've got good news and bad news. You're going to need to go on and get yourself a new cloak, since the fellow with your cloak left us in the dust. That being said, it looks like he doesn't even know who you are, so you'll be safe here."

Posted

"Well, we can assure you that you won't come to any harm at least. We dealt with most of the thieves, one of them did happen to get away. If you'd like his cloak- so everything will be fair and squared away- you can go talk to the Bonapartes. Now... I believe we talked of a fee for our services?"

"Well, I believe our agreement did depend upon you returning my cloak and it looks like I'm going to have to go out and purchase a new one. However, since you have relieved me of most of my worries, I'd be willing to pay you each 25 Gold and a Nostrum. Does this sound adequate?

"More than. Thank you kindly. I have another question for you. Do you priests take on stewards or assistants or clerks or anything of that sort? I may have a man looking for a job, if you do. Could I send him your way, if he consents? I'll give him a note with my signature to show to you."

Spinnetus rustled around at his desk before handing each of the heroes 25 Gold and a Nostrum.

"We have our fair share of apprentices, but if you are aware of an individual who shows gumption for the service of Mercutio, I would not mind taking on a steward myself. You'd best let your man know however, that the life of a priest in the service of Mercutio is not an easy one and requires both discipline of the intellect as well as the body."

"Well, I'll see if he's interested." Boomingham turns to his companions. "You are free to return to the Hall if you like. I'm going back to the Hovels and seeing Plud first, however."

The Party makes its way back to the Grumpkin commune, where they are greeted by a familiar individual of the afore mentioned species.
