So after getting the A-wing and the rancor pit earlier this week, I passed by the toy store (again) for something completely different (X-mas decorations), but picked up the AT-RT. I have a soft spot for walkers (AT-AT being the favorite, of course) and wanted to see how it works. I had another long hard look at the Headhunter but couldn't part with €50 for it...

Pics are below, but first my findings.

The build was easy, as could be expected. The droideka was a pleasant surprise, it's fun to build and uses some nice tricks. It may not look very realistic but it was fun.

Even though the model itself is nice, posing it is impossible: you can put the feet in only one position, any other position than 'straight up' will make the model fall over. Unless of course you put it onto some sort of base.

I also let my son play with it and he too found that 'walking' the model is not very practical. He did like the big gun up front, which swivels from side to side, but not up and down.

Something that bothers me with most kits is that they use 'more' parts where 'less' would do, making the model less sturdy and increasing part count. (Putting 2 1x4's next to each other instead of just using one 2x4 for example...). This model has none of that :)

All in all, I like this kit, but would probably not buy it again as it's not really what I expected. I like the fact that Yoda's there: no clue what the link with this model is but I didn't have him yet so...

Pic time!

The instructions:

3 baggies again, where one would have been sufficient.

Parts:

Full res versions of the partlists here and here.

Ah yes, stickers again. However, it's only 4 and they're very good quality: print on transparent vinyl, which is more durable and does not mimic the coulour of the piece it's used on - it actually shows the colour underneath. So yes, decals, but not too bad.

05.JPG

Minifigs. I count the droideka as one, too - even though it's actually a model. Next is a droid with a red dot on the chest and a nice printed face. Spare arms are included in the kit. Then there's Yoda and the driver (pilot?) -clone.

06.JPG

Squirrel!

07.JPG

And the clone's face - single sided print.

08.JPG

The walker in all its glory.

09.JPG

The backside.

The small technic detail below the platform is purely cosmetic, they just touch the frame but are not attached. I've pulled one back a bit to show you. It's nice that the blue Technic pins actually match the model's colour. So not like the planet AT-ST which is completely grey with flashy blue pins.

11.JPG

All the armour plates are hinged. Here is a pic with all plates opened.

12.JPG

Front view.

Another angle.

14.JPG

The driver has no seat, which is a pity. He does fit nicely onto the model, has a spot for his blaster behind him, and can grab the steering handles. There is no console.

Hope you guys liked this first look, and if you want specific info / pics: just ask below. Thanks!

Thanks for all the Reviews you have made BrickieB! I love the design of the Rancor Pit and A-Wing( Those are purchases for sure.) I have to admite though, the AT-RT isn't my favorite set so I'll probally avoid picking this one up, but since the summer doesn't have much for me, I probally end up picking an Z-95 Headhunter.

By the Way, are all the other 2013 lego sets out in your country?

Thanks again for the reviews!

Thanks for this preview

Personally I don't like Clone Wars, but this AT-RT walker coloured in green than in blue could be useful for a MOC about Episode III.

Out of curiosity, how are you getting these? Do you live in a country where you get them really early? Are you a time traveler? I'm slightly annoyed that TLG takes so long in announcing release dates for stuff, it makes planning more difficult then it should be.

I admit: I am a time traveler. (btw: Don't eat that sandwich next thursday - you complained about it on facebook.)

My local toy store has these in stock. They have the first batch, so that's 75000-75005. As soon as they get the planets in stock I'll get those too - but they're not here yet. They also have new City, Ninjago, Hobbit, Friends stuff...

I usually don't care for clone wars, but I liked the walker / the colour. And I wanted Relatively Young Yoda.

I am so jealous. I'd totally book some travel time if I could but considering you can win the the lotto any time you feel like it you're price must be way too high. Anyone know if the lego store gets stuff in early? That's the only way I can see driving the hour plus that it would take to get there.

I'm not a fan of the CW, but I do like the 501st, so this one is still a tough call. Though after seeing the pics, I think I'm leaning towards getting it. The battle droid (or whatever variation it is) would never see the light of day, but another Destroyer Droid would not be worthless. I wish it didn't come with Yoda and instead had another 501st trooper. Especially, with the rumored Yoda vs Dooku summer set.

Edit: By the way, thanks for posting those great pics.

Thank you BrickieB! I am not a huge fan of droids, since they are not really considered minifigures, but hey the walker looks good! Are the legs of the walker movable?

Thanks for another neat review 'BrickieB', a solid looking walker and in my opinion a better destroyer droid.

Yes, they can move, but not in any way that you'd use...

Thanks for the pictures BrickieB, you're a lucky man to get these so early (jealous of course!).

This is a massive improvement over 7250 and despite being out of scale somewhat the shape and details are really nice. Rather like that sniper droid too. The new 501st trooper is great and although I like the commando droids I really wish LEGO would find a better solution to droid legs so we could display them in more dynamic poses. I'll pick this set up for sure though. Maybe two.... ;)

Thank you for this!

I don't care if the walker isn't to scale, it's a brilliant model and I can't wait to get it :sweet:

Thank you! I was just wondering about its pose-ability.

Thanks for the pictures! :classic: I'm really happy that Yoda has back printing now. Although I do agree with other that two 501st troopers instead of a 501st trooper and Yoda would have been better.

Need to get at least 2 of these!!!

The new 501 clone looks great!

The walker looks really sharp, and I hope that the rumored gunship coming out this summer can hold it well, like in the show. But what's with the clone? His visor looks squished!

Squirrel- subtle and very funny! I'm glad you snuck that in there. I just don't like the way the blue looks on these, accurate or not. Reminds me of the old TIE's.

I had pretty much stopped buying Star Wars sets aside from the odd minifigure but this set looks awesome! Will be picking this up in my january spending spree!

Thanks for the review!

I guess the amount of positioning for the walker's legs would be similar to the one with the Brickmaster book, so the posability would be that it only stands, then for another pose, you move the whole leg back a few clicks to make it look like it's walking. I wish it were better given all the details placed in this build.

Is that a new print for Yoda as well?

Yes it is, this time he has white hair instead of grey hair and now he has back printing.

Great review by the way
