Thanks for sharing!

I'm excited for all the play features almost as much for the train itself! It's amazing how much is packed into this set!

Cheers from Claremore, Oklahoma USA! :classic:

Looks great. So I'm thinking lengthen the tender by 1 stud and put a PF bogie, Receiver and lead weight in it. Then build a dummy goods carriage and put the PF battery box in there. Might want to add some pistons to the loco aswell.

Prizes for guessing what the lever on top of the prison carriage does.

It actually looks a lot better than I was expecting it to. I am sure the train can be modified to take PF in the tender and some roads on the wheels would not go amiss. Overall though it is looking good. Price would be nice to know in advance though?

So what can AFOLs find to whine about with this one then?

It's too American  Doesn't come with power functions, or instructions to motorise. Comes with lots of curved track I don't need. Should be a passenger train like the movie excerpt ... etc etc.

Seriously though, it looks like a nice parts pack. I'm always up for more dark green, the minifigs mostly look useful for town (anybody want to buy a Lone Ranger?). As long as it's an OK price, I'll buy one or two.

I just noticed there are no train baseplates which make it even more attractive to a seven wide builder, since I normally don't use many.

Anyone else notice the Western trend in all of the latest Lego Steam Locomotive Sets.

P.s. the next pneumatic locomotive will be a western train... If you hav'nt seen the post ... I would love some feedback!

I'm actually quite excited for this set. I really like the look of the engine itself, and the fact that it comes with so many train parts and track is wonderful as well. I know a lot of people couldn't care less for curved track, but it's something I'm desperately in need of. I'll definitely be picking up 2+ copies of this (Especially if I can find them on sale...), depending on what the price is.

But really, cowcatcher, drivers, wheels, couplers, and tracks? If this set's under $100 then that's totally fantastic. :D And I like the set design more than I did with the Toy Story Train, too.

This train looks good, depending on price I may need to pick one up as a source of train parts. Although I bet it will be really expensive (licensed sets usually are in Australia)

Lots of useful train parts with this one, but the set price here in New Zealand is bound to be outside my budget unless I was to part out all the bits I don't want.

The loco itself would be the only part of the set I'd want,

From the Yahoo! Movies article:

The chase is on to save Rebecca and Danny from Butch Cavendish and his gang of henchmen onboard the speeding train, Constitution! Help Tonto to place the dynamite and blow up the water tower to stop the speeding train in its tracks! Ride to the rescue with the Lone Ranger alongside on his trusty horse, Silver. Jump aboard the highly detailed locomotive with 3 cars and dodge the gatling gun! Uncover the secret coal wagon hideout, blow the prison wagon door with the dynamite and escape to safety with Rebecca and Danny! (Emphasis added)

I don't think the mechanism blows the sliding doors off but based on the Technic beam used, it probably "blows" a panel off the back of the prison wagon.

I'd like to get something like this - on sale - for my son and I to play with but I don't want anything too toyish.

What do you guys think, is it akin to the Toy Story or Harry Potter trains (toyish) or is it something a little more serious? We're kinda new to Lego.

There's nothing wrong with toyish but I'd just like to get something that is totally worth installing Power Functions in.

Also, how do you think this would look running around a Winter Village themed set?

Thanks, Joe

OK, nit picking here - but what's with TLG using tan wheel axles on everything including the loco in this set? How I wish they could produce some black ones for a change. Black axle pins are like gold dust - having only ever been used on a couple of space sets back in the 1980's but they make train wheels look SO much better. http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3749

I may have to resort to painting tan axle pins black (sacrilege!)

What you could do is mod the locomotive to use 6L technic axles.

Nice set. Not for me as still saving, clearing space for Horizon Express and I generally like to keep things European.

Has lots of playability already, I wonder if the instructions will include a guide for PF conversion, looks like you'd really have to size-up the tender to fit the battery box in.

Also, that loco is screaming for different front wheels, plus steam rods. Not to mention the black axle pins... (as already pointed out)

Yes, in fact, if you want to fit interlocking pistons/ steam rods you would probably have to fit 6L axles that run right thru otherwise the wheels would jam (I think?) However, I'm still always on the lookout for those black frictionless axle pins for various other bogies. (eg. Emerald Night needs 8 to replace the tan ones that come with the set). You could use 6L axles for some of those but they grind and add alot of drag compared to the frictionless pins.

The part you are referring to was included in a few early bionicle sets. I have a few of the black pins somewhere. Can never find them though. :sceptic:
