Ultron Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 You are right in saying that Batman and Superman are guaranteed sales. However, if DC and WB collaborated to try and make a really good film for one of their other superheroes (and not make it extremely terrible like Green Lantern) then maybe that would make money. And I don't see how it matters that Marvel aren't using characters who are typically considered A-Listers. After all, at least they're taking the risk in giving characters such as Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy their own movies. As it is, all these movies have successfully transformed these characters from B-Listers and C-Listers into A-Listers. That's what is so impressive about how Marvel are doing things. That's all I'll say on this. After all, we don't want this thread to degrade into a Marvel vs DC debate. On a different note, have we seen any footage of Crossbones for Captain America: The Winter Soldier yet? Yes. He's in the quinjet when cap jumps out of it and I think he was in that video of cap and black widow going after batroc. Pretty sure I also saw him fighting falcon during one of the trailers.. Quote
Faefrost Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Batman and Superman are guaranteed successes, so it's little wonder why they use them often. WB tried Green Lantern and that failed (it was a terrible movie). As for Marvel, the only reason why they use lesser known characters is because that's all they have left. We wouldn't see Iron man, Thor or the Guardians of the Galaxy if they still had their A-listers. But the weird counterintuitive thing is the B list characters typically make better movies (if out in the right hands). The fans go in having fewer expectations. Starting with less overhyped characters like Iron Man also allowed for more of a build. And more of a brand build. Right now people will flock to see Guardians of the Galaxy because it has "new from MARVEL" right up front of the trailers. The only others where the studio itself can drive the interest are Pixar and Disney itself. WB wishes they could drive traffic just on the DC name alone. This name power will let Marvel farm some of the deeper recesses of their catalog. It lets them do the talking SciFi Racoon movie and have fans fall in love with it. While there is no way WB could spit out a movie featuring their talking supernatural detective chimp and have it do anything but dislodge Green Lantern from their worst list. Quote

Darth Lurtz Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Halle Berry was a terrible Storm anyway. Still, this is concerning for it cements that the other future Mutants have a very small role as well. Rogue was already apparently cut out. This should have been Kitty Pryde's movie like in the comic that this film is based off of. Quote
Tanma Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Its things like that that made me apathetic to the fox Marvel movies. I just-they are all about Wolverine. The only movie not directly about Wolverine, First Class, still had him cameo and still was just about two old white guys. I- No, its not worth it. I just get really tired of the fox movies, like with what happened to Darwin, or their lack of use of Kitty Pryde. Quote
Lord Rahl of Clannad Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Well this is disappointing to an extent. This probably means yet more screen time for Wolverine, especially as they're having him go to the past and everything instead, so he'll end up in almost every scene of this film. I'm still holding out hoe that this film will be good, and I'll be sure to watch it when it comes out. I can't wait to see the Future Sentinel(s) in action. Quote

Also they weren't old yet in First Class ;) Quote
Clone OPatra Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Since this movie isn't out yet and we have no idea how they are handling the plot (i.e. what the plot even is), I wouldn't get concerned yet. I'm actually glad somebody is having the sense to not allow every actor cameo into the movie; as I read about the production of the movie, I couldn't believe how many characters were being added since it sounded like it would turn into another muddle of a million characters and next to no plot (cough X3 cough). From what I've gleaned from a few interviews, most of this movie takes place in the past timeline and not the future one, so it makes sense that they're cutting down the future one to just what it needs to be to serve the film. I guess we'll just have to wait a few months to see. I also see that the Comic Book Resources article was updated with another source claiming that the original source was bogus and that Storm isn't being cut down. Seems like quite the rumor storm, eh? Tanma Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Now now, let's not forget the naked blue chick. Also they weren't old yet in First Class ;) I am not awake enough to deal with the continuity mess that is her. Old or not, the fact remains that the movie X-Men are even worse at diversity than the comics. Which is sad for a team that is supposed to be a metaphor for discrimination. And not to go into it, Darwin was pretty much the only guy in that film who wasn't white, and he ended up dead. Which makes no sense, since his power is "not dying." Seriously, once he turned into a god to stop from dying. On the matter of plot, if you name your movie after a fairly famous X-Men storyline, people will go in expecting somethings. Among them, Kitty Pryde going back in time to save the future. Days of Future's Past is a story about the youngest X-Men saving the world where all the older X-Men failed. It's about growth. And the X-Men movies are not about growth. They are about one single character, and a few side characters. No one else is necessary to the plot. Yes, Wolverine was hardly in FC. But given how he was the main character in every other film, hijacked Jean and Scott's story in X3, has two films with his name directly in the title, I have little doubt he is stealing Kitty's story here too. And since Wolverine already gets enough publicity as is, I just end up feeling disgusted at worst and apathetic at best. Honestly, I just am burned out on all the X-Men movies. All but one were directly about a character who bores me, and the ones that don't bore me aren't used. i just... You know what, I'm going to focus elsewhere. Never good to focus on stressful stuff. My sister a few days ago claimed that Sebastion Stan has been signed for nine Marvel movies. (He plays Bucky in Cap 1) Any one else hear that? Because if that is true, then Marvel is planning way ahead. Quote

Ultron Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 It happens during the Civil War storyline, if you're interested. It'll spoil it, but if you're not too worried about that, go ahead and read about it. Quote

This news of Sebastian Stan signing a 9 movie deal with Marvel, combined with the news that Chris Evans has said he wants to take a break from acting for a while, has me almost convinced that this is the direction we will see the MCU take. I hope this is the case, because eventually we will get the chance for a LEGO Winter Soldier. Plus, it would feel like a waste to only see the guy in action properly once and then kill him off. Quote

Yeah once crossbones and winter soldier were going to be in the movie, they pretty much spelled out what direction they're going. Quote

I understand the relevance of Winter Soldier to this direction in which they're going, but can you explain how Crossbones hints at that as well? I'm entirely unfamiliar with the character so don't understand his role at all. Quote
Tanma Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Sorry, I really keep missing these updates. Good to see it isn't just me though. I am hopeful that the MCU will be more open to legacy characters like Bucky!Cap, that way we don't get trapped with the same characters forever. Not that I don't like the Avengers, but I don't want the status quo to be good. And since time is moving much faster in the MCU than the comics and their is no sliding timescale, I think we have a chance to "age" out of a potential status quo. Quote

Lord Rahl of Clannad Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Crossbones assassinates captain america I see. Well that makes sense. Though that connection is there in the comics, there's no real guarantee that the MCU will follow the same route. Of course, nothing can be ruled out at this stage. After all, the film hasn't even come out yet. Quote

Possibly captain america 3. I think it will happen though, it's just uncertain as to when that will be. Quote

BrickG Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) This KREE d00d will probably be revealed around the time Guardians of the Galaxy happens. Meaning SHIELD is going slow half because of the movies :P. The show really needs to speed up and become more interesting. I wonder if Karen Gillan would be willing to appear on SHIELD. Or Chris Pratt. They're both pretty TV friendly. Edited March 18, 2014 by BrickG Quote
