So I now need to come up with my August shopping list with Star Wars and BTTF set...

And as far as I know about LEGO employees, they don't say anything until there is an official announcement, even if they do in fact know.

Well I'm glad that box picture showed all three models, because I can now say that all three are rubbish.

Minifigs = awesome, but the car, man its a stinker.

I'm sure the designers had a whole range of limitations put on them, but there is a decision point, if its not going to look right based on the limitations then why do it at all.

Same thing applied with the mini Sydney Opera House. Why bother doing it at all if you are under so many limitations.

Personally I'm putting this set in the epic fail category.

Minifigs and flux capacitor are nice, but the rest of it is just awful! Lego what were you thinking? You butchered this builder's vision, which is what Cuusoo users asked for! Shame on you!

Thinking about it further, I'm starting to lean more towards the idea that TLG shouldn't have redesigned the set so drastically, even for functionality; I'm now starting to think it might have been better to just keep a single, excellent design without even bothering to include the multiple configurations. After all, it (presumably) has only the two minifigures, representing just a few scenes with a single configuration, rather than lots of different Martys and Docs (and other characters) to go with all the reconfigurations the car undergoes in the movies.

But even with that, I'm still excited for the set, and definitely plan to get it.

I'll bet there are more fans of LEGO who are BFFT fans than the other way 'round

Well... probably LEGO fans overall (of which kids make up the overwhelming majority, of course), but AFOLs or other "serious" LEGO fans (i.e., the kind who'd get CUUSOO sets)? I wouldn't be too sure.

Just how many people out there are collecting BTTF toys? Not a place I'd start up a new business that's for sure

I don't think it really requires many "collectors" of BttF toys, since this itself is just a single set rather than a whole theme. All it needs is BttF fans, many of whom do collect BttF stuff in general (just not so much toys, since there were never that many toys to begin with), and there are certainly plenty of people who love these movies. I'd hazard a guess that if this set doesn't do well it'll be because of the complaints many have about the final execution of the model (especially when compared to the beautiful proposal model), and not because nobody wants an official LEGO Back to the Future DeLorean time machine set.

To bad this isn't an actual licensed set, Lego would have just created a new piece. I guess I need to set the bar low for CUUSOO sets...

Wait - what? This is an actual licensed set. Do you really think LEGO would just go ahead and make a Back to the Future set without getting a license from Universal? The Universal logo is even there on the box.

You forget that buyers of this set are over 30 pushing 40 .. AFOLs to be precise. Those creatures are not known to actually play with LEGO. They MOC and/or display .. this set will mean zero to TLG's usual target group

That's why they're complaining about the rather crappy look of the hood. The "slope 10 6x 8" was just about perfect for this job ..

Just because a set is designed to appeal to AFOLs doesn't mean it's designed ONLY to appeal to AFOLs. And furthermore, when you get right down to it, LEGO is a toy and that's the reason most AFOLs like it to begin with. There's a reason adult LEGO Space fans often celebrate sets for being "swooshable": with the LEGO brand comes the inherent expectation that the model have some capacity for play.

Furthermore, I find it somewhat ironic that you're arguing LEGO should have used one specialized element for this task instead of several smaller elements and complex building techniques, which tends to go against the very design philosophy that most AFOL-oriented sets are celebrated for. Generally, achieving a task with small, simple elements is the sort of thing that AFOLs embrace, especially when it yields a more detailed model as a result. In this case, no, the hood isn't as streamlined as it would have been with a large tile or slope, but it also narrows towards the front in a way that is more visually interesting than the "tapered box" look a slope or tile would have yielded, and in a way that creates a more exciting building experience.

Has anyone seen this already? I am posting from a Pad, so I can not see if the picture fits in the 800x600 resolution max... I hope so! (Source 1000steine.de)

Very awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I think he means an active/current license like Cars or themes like that which got new molds as they were produced in highest number.

I do not think I would like a custom part though. I even prefer the current style than using new custom parts. It is Lego, not Megablocks.

I thought I wouldn´t jump in yet again but I just can´t understand how all of you already know that the Team BTTF´s CUUSOO model is sooooooooooo much better than the TLG one that no one of you have seen IRL or built/played with. You have the right of your own opinion as I said before, but how, how, how are you able to judge the upcoming set so thoroughly already? Have you even built the Team BTTF one from the instructions? Have you compared it with the dimensions of the real DeLorean?

Earlier a lot of people went ape-shit crazy and totally pissed on the set because there wasn´t any minifigs. Then two minifigs magicly appeared! Re-read the thread a bit back and you´ll see how a lot of thoose people had a hallelujah moment.

I´ll keep an open mind until I´ve seen an in-depth review which also compares the two versions. That´s basicly my message that I would love to see more people embrace!

The picture's right there. We haven't had any extremely in-depth looks at the TLG DeLorean either, but from the same 3/4 angle of the project shot and the model, it's fair to form an opinion about what's visible. :shrug_confused: There's almost surely more to the model than just that one picture, but there's no point in not discussing what we know now just because we don't have a complete look of the entire thing.

I agree with this notion to an extent, but to be fair some of the people who are complaining about the new set don't seem to care a lot about its stability, playability, or building experience and are chiefly interested in it as a display piece. And in that regard, it's easy to see how people might prefer the original MOCs as far as streamlining and authenticity are concerned. So it's perfectly acceptable to say "I don't like this set" from the pics alone.

With that said, not liking a set is not reason to assume it will not be successful, as some people have done. The Minecraft set was heavily criticized by many AFOLs from the time the original project reached its support threshold well beyond the time the set was released. It was criticized as being too niche for many buyers, for being unimpressive visually, and for being perfectly redundant (since the gameplay in Minecraft is already very much like LEGO building). And that's far from the only set or theme AFOLs have lambasted and declared "dead on arrival" before they were released to a welcoming audience. Ninjago, BIONICLE, Hero Factory, Architecture, Friends... the list goes on. And particularly in this case, if the existence of a welcoming audience for a new product were something anyone could reliably predict, then there's no reason the Back to the Future license would have had to happen through LEGO Cuusoo in the first place!

I'm only 22 years old currently, but I grew up on the Back to the Future films (though I somehow never managed to see the second one until this past year). They are frequently replayed on American television networks and appeal to a family demographic, despite unquestionably being products of the 80s. Also, we're at a point where 80s popular culture is heavily reinforced by the massive online presence of people from that generation. As kids and adults alike become more and more "wired", they become immersed in that generation's nostalgia through memes and cultural references. So I doubt that the audience for these will be nearly as narrow as some people seem to expect.

I'm currently re-creating the official Delorean on LDD. Once official instructions come out, I can finish it, and we can see the comparison..

I've always been a little put off when it comes to the height of Lego cars. They're gigantic, more compareable to a bus due to the odd minifigure proportions :P. Cars aren't that tall. :)

Well the hood doesn't look so hard to mod, so if you don't want the blocky hood, you can mod it for a ramp piece (sorry forgot the name  ) The manager at the Shepherd's Bush store said he would reserve one for my son, since we already made our monthly purchase for this month.

You're right. Oh well. It'll still be fun for the people who won't/don't have it. :classic:

Go ahead, I didn´t mean it by any way to discourage you :cry_happy: !!

DeLorean is an interesting case, it's not that professional looking as a model. I imagine the final version could be quite different. I even noticed an illegal connection at the front  . Congrats, it's a good project & I'm sure it will sell.

There isn't illegal connections. I built a replica some weeks ago and I noticed nothing.

EDIT: Lol, you mean the firs model. I got lost in the pages
