They've announced it's coming. I don't think the licence at this point is an issue... the project would have died and/or they wouldn't have announced it if it they didn't have those kinds of things sorted out.

Universal probably have some existing agreement to use the likeness of the BTTF Delorean in their marketing materials and sub-licenses. It is, after all, an extremely customised design over and above the original model. That wouldn't necessarily extend to using the DMC logo, which may well explain why a lot of BTTF products conveniently omit it. In any case, it's a safe bet TLG would have long since sorted these kinds of details out before announcing the product.

I hope whatever Lego does, it'll be true enough to whatever the original designers had initially made the set look like.

Anyways, my dad was the one that got me to watch the BTTF trilogy when I was at around 12, when about 10 years ago they came out with the whole trilogy on DVD. I think I might buy one for myself and my dad whenever this comes out.

No offence intended to the original designers, but I really hope that LEGO don't stick to the original design that was created. I can guarantee that LEGO will improve the original design before we see the set in LEGO stores and on S@H.

We are not talking about the chance of production. We are talking about the name of the product and what it means for the design. I.e. if TLG does not have the DMC licence and it is not included in the BTTF licence, then the "Time Machine" had to look (slightly) different from a DeLorean.

My theory is that the BTTF "Time Machine" based on the DeLorean is different from the DeLorean itself (different enough to be legally considered as a new design / IP). Or that the Time Machine licence indeed includes the DeLorean licence.

I'm 99.9999% sure the license includes the DeLorean. There are other Back to the Future toys that clearly call it a DeLerean. I don't think that would ever be an issue.

Polar Lights went through this a few years back with their BttF model kit. If I recall correctly they only need a DeLorean license to include the word DeLorean on the box or to use any DMC markings or logos. Otherwise the BttF time machine is modified enough from an actual licensed DeLorean so as to be its own unique derivative. A DeLorean was used as a starting point in the construction of the car. The end result is now its own recognize able thing.

This is similar to the licensing for the Barris Batmobile. Even though there is a Lincoln Futura under there, it has been changed enough that the license is all Barris. Same thing with the GhostBusters car and Cadilac.

I expected as much. Sure, it starts as a DeLorean but the final thing is totally different. To me though, it doesn't matter whether this set has the DeLorean name in it or not. It's just something that is interesting to take a look at. After all, there isn't really anything else to discuss as of yet.

Sweet! I'm definitely getting one

I will probably be too. Not necessarily because I'm a Back to the Future fan (I'll be honest, I've never seen the films before), but because it features in a music video from a song that I really like (Deer in the Headlights by Owl City). I can't wait to see this set finally get revealed to us.

Don't worry, I have seen the Star Wars films  (including The Clone Wars). As for how I live, it's not particularly difficult. I have plenty of films that I like. Mind you, maybe I should watch BttF at some point in the future...

YES, an owl city fan! (Digital high five!) ON TOPIC: I'm going to wait before I judge the set.

Okay, to bring this back on topic, I cannot judge the model until I see it for the first time. However, it is likely that I will still buy it, or at least try to buy it with my restricted LEGO budget. If I cannot buy it myself, I will probably end up putting it on my Christmas list. Speaking of budget, what is the likely price of this set?

The Minecraft set was considerably over-priced IMO so, we can safely assume a price of $35-$50.

I thought the Minecraft set had a decent price, and I could see this as a $35 set, too. The conceptual time machine is a very similar build to the Hearse set from last year, which was also $35. Heck, a $40 price point for this is good as long as the minifigures are detailed.

I wonder how TLC will deal with the illegal building methods the original model obviously has but I am pretty sure they'll find a good solution.

They posted an LDD video a bit ago, doesn't LDD not allow illegal building methods? I could be wrong, but still.....
