382nd Legionnaire Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 50 bones for 426 isn't TOO bad for a Star Wars set. Between the speeder and the Snowtroopers, I think I'm going to have to grab this one. Gunner would have been nice but I guess there are plenty of pilots around and I'm not sure what I'd subtract from the set in order to incorporate one. Someone's been watching alot of the Brickshow, haven't they. Nice review, this set looks pretty good as you've shown. I wonder how different this snowspeeder is from the Wampa Cave one. Quote
BlauUmlaut Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 I just ordered this from Lego. I hope to get some time to build it and give you my thoughts. What other sets would you, the forum, suggest to mix in with this set? I have the wampa and the last echo base release. I'm a sucker for good displayed dioramas. Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but I believe the new Snowtrooper minifigure has a slightly updated torso print from previous versions. Quote
Lobot Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but I believe the new Snowtrooper minifigure has a slightly updated torso print from previous versions. I've only just noticed that the Snowtroopers have grey hands....why?? They'll go sooo well with the older, white, versions........! Quote
Nom Carver Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 It looks like a mix of earlier hoth sets, nothing in what could be interested. Quote
Ace Krampus Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Someone's been watching alot of the Brickshow, haven't they. Never seen it. Is it use of 'bones,' or my general sage wisdom? Haha. Quote

Yes, they are new prints although it dosn't say "NEW!" on the box for some wierd reason. Also, what appears to be a ketchup stain on the snowtrooper has been assumed to be two tiny red and blue marks or lights or buttons or something. You can see it better on the older snowtroopers. Galaxy Explorer Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Very nice review and thank you for the comparison pics! Although it's not perfect, I do like this set quite a bit. I guess when I heard "Battle of Hoth" AT-AT's immediately came to mind, and I started to think of a big $200+ DTC set. But this is fine- a nice, affordable set with quite a few accessories and a decent minifig selection. I bought this set about a week before Christmas and put it together right away. I really liked the addition of the rear gunner viewscreen with the AT-AT feet. Well done! The Probe Droid has lost it's cuteness from the 7666 version and actually looks a little sinister, but I can't help making the Joe Swanson noise when I swish it around! The legs are more articulated and look kind of spindly. It's great to finally get a General Rieekan, and I agree with everyone a gunner (Dak) would have been nice to have. Even better IMO would have been to scratch Luke altogether and use Wedge and Janson instead. The trench parts and field weaponry all look great, especially the trench cannon. It reminds me very much of Kenner's Imperial Attack Base from 1980. Yay vintage! This set combined with the Wampa Attack and AT-AT from 2010, and Hoth Base from 2011 would make a great diorama. Quote
hachiroku Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 ¿65€? Definetely, I'm not going to buy this. Expensive and nothing new, even it's the same ss, only with more stickers. I can buy the Rancor's set with that money. Quote
382nd Legionnaire Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Never seen it. Is it use of 'bones,' or my general sage wisdom? Haha. The Brickshow uses the term "bones" all the time, not to mention they always use the 10 cents per piece in their reviews. Just thought I saw another fan that watched the brickshow using their terminology. And thanks for the additional comparison pictures Punisher16! Those are much appreciated. Quote

The brickshow is terrible IMO, they don't know enough basic Star Wars trivia NOT to sound ignorant every SW review they do. I'm sorry if you like them or are friends or something, but a lot of ametuers do a WAY better job. I'll probably watch them do the 2013 SW reviews anyway, but I will bite my lip and cringe through them. <== tbs Quote
Brickadeer Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the review and the comparison pics I like the set. The price of EUR 49,99 is way more reasonable than anticipated. The only problem I have is that it is a TRU exclusive. Since TRU Germany excludes certain exclusive sets (e.g. 9526, 7869) from any discount, I'll wait until May 4th to buy it at the Lego Shop online. Edited December 28, 2012 by Brickadeer Quote
TheLegoDr Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Thanks for the review. I was up in the air about this set, but with my more budget-conscious mind for 2013, I think I will pass (unless an awesome sale happens). I don't mind how the set looks, I just don't have a use for a lot of extras since I don't do Hoth dioramas. The General is neat, but he is the only thing I'd want from the set. I purchased a few Taun-Tauns on bricklink, so I already have them. Either way, the snowspeeder does look neat and since I don't have one, it may be worthwhile. But I'm not really into building vehicles usually, I just buy them for the pieces and beautiful figures usually. Quote

When they were first starting out, they looked very awkward. It really looked like their children forced them to buy the set and now they have to reluctantly say why they liked it. They've improved since they've first been doing the show, but I don't take their word for a set 100%. Its just that I watched a lot of other bigtime reviewers on Youtube (not naming them) before Brickshow came about and they are heavily biased with each set. The Brickshow isn't afraid to say why they thought a set was bad, something many reviewers are too optimistic about. Quote
jedikermit Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Thanks for the review. I'm a sucker for Hoth sets, unfortunately. Worrrrd. They had me at "Tauntaun." Quote
Brickington Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Great Review! Have you thought of attending the Eurobricks Reviewer Academy? Quote
HawkLord Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Great review - thanks for posting it. I'm still on the fence about the set. Nothing really that flashy about it and I'm not sure I need it enough. Though compared with everything else on my short list for the start of '13, this makes the decision a bit harder. Quote
Lego Chris Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 The UCS snowspeeder begs to differ Ah I stand corrected. I will retry this and say its the best minifigure scale yet. Quote
Sirtank Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I ended up ordering this set yesterday. My Wife gave me the Echo Base for Christmas, so I needed to give Hoth it's own shelf. I figured I might as well go all out and make the shelf as cool as possible. I'm glad to see that the new snow speeder is close enough to the old model that it won't bother me having them both on the same shelf. Quote
DarthBrickus Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Thanks for the review! I think what this set is missing is a highlight. Hoth Echo Base was pretty mediocre in itself, but it had 4 1/2 unique Minifigs and that cool Bacta-Tank to put Luke in. This feels just like a rehash of some old sets thrown together, with a unique minifig that does neither scream "play with me" nor "display me" imho. I'll pass Quote
Graysmith Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 It's a shame this is an exclusive set with a jacked-up price. As a lover of all things Hoth I'd really like to get it (no matter how much of it is a repeat), but it'll be hard if not impossible to find at a discount where it'd be worth buying it. Too damn bad. Quote
Brickmamba Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 Thanks for the early review, very uninspiring looking set, almost a midi version of hoth sets released in the past. I guess it helps for those doing Hoth MOCs, otherwise easy pass Quote
Chills Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Great review, thanks for posting. I, too, and a sucker for Hoth sets; I have them all. This set is underwhelming, a barely updated speeder, another white speederbike (someone commented on how their Hoth scene has more speederbikes than their Endor scene... LOL mine too!), and another Tauntaun. I will say that the Atgar cannon looks great. This and General Reikaan are enough for me to part with some $$ for this set. I sure hope TLG will make a great Hoth set next year. Something with the power generators and an ion cannon. Please! ;) Quote
Zzz Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 The Atgar and Riekan are great, also it's a nice selection for a Hoth layout. But there are some things I dislike: - Snowspeeder still based on 4500, nothing new - Snowspeeder has wrong marking to be Luke's - Dack is missing, it's too obvious TLC wants me to get the stupid planet set - all torso prints slightly updated, so no perfect match to previous figures - would have been nice to include Han or Leia as there is no way I'll buy the terrible Hoth base set - if I had a dollar for every white speeder bike... - why displaying Luke twice on the official pic? this is more than misleading and very unprofessional My idea for a better set is to skip the better torso prints on Snowies and rebels (keep Luke's), throw out speeder bike, throw in Dack and Han, create a better SS with orange markings. The set's average for me. Still, might get this for 4th May depending on the deal. Quote
