Cammo Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Need advice. Should I buy the Asylum when the double VIP points are still active or should I wait and let the promotion pass and buy the Orthanc Set instead? Quote
Mr_Malfoy Posted March 31, 2013 Posted March 31, 2013 Need advice. Should I buy the Asylum when the double VIP points are still active or should I wait and let the promotion pass and buy the Orthanc Set instead? Buy it. It's a gorgeous set, the minifigures are exquisitely detailed, there's an enormous amount of detail throughout the build, and you'll get $15 bucks of VIP Points. Go get it ! Quote
Cammo Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 I bit the bullet while visiting a LEGO brand store for the first time. Only built the gate and van. Still shocked that I actually bought a 170 euro set :0 But it wasctotally worth it! Even got 25 euro saved up for the Orthanc Tower. :) Quote
Elrond Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 This looks like a very good set with an incredible amount of details. Is it just me or does it look more like a MOC than an actual LEGO set? It certainly isn't a criticism, it's just that the way it's built seems rather unconventional to me for some reason. Quote
Cammo Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Well the designer is a renown MOCer. (He mentions it in the designer video.) And really the pictures don't do this set justice. Once you see it in real-life, you're very tempted to buy it right away. Quote

The build utilizes some interesting and unique piece combos and techniques. It was refreshing to see a licensed set in which the build was the star and not the minifigs. Quote

Once you see it in real-life, you're very tempted to buy it right away. Ah, here's the explanation. I believe you, he really nailed the look and feel of Arkham Asylum. That's a fair assesment. The build utilizes some interesting and unique piece combos and techniques. It was refreshing to see a licensed set in which the build was the star and not the minifigs. True, I'm still amazed by all the details on the roof and the furniture (that's typically the sort of things you'd see in MOCs... but then again, there's apparently a good reason for that). Quote
Catanas Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Aye, this is defintely one of my favourite Lego sets ever. So much so I've bought a couple and am making an even bigger version in the same style! I'm especially fond of the window design. The little hints of dark red give just a little bit more character. Quote
Csacsa234 Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Thanks for the quality and thorough review Clone O'Patra! I really fell for this set, i don't think I can say anything bad about it. The figs are excellent and there is plenty of bad guys which is a good point. The Asylum itself is really beautiful and it's the first time I don't mind that the building is just a detailed wall. The cells, the window on the roof, the gargoyles, the van and the gates are very nice touches, each of them. I haven't bought such an expensive and big set, but seriously you can't miss this. Only if the price could get a little lower... Quote
Sam892 Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 This set arrived at my house on Friday and its incredible. So pleased I got it, was a bit unsure but its great. Also great review Clone O'Patra! Quote
Brickmamba Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 This set is just a beast and a great one to have and to place the rest of the other Batman characters and yet to have Penguin and Scarecrow will be a welcome addition to the collection, great review, thanks heaps Quote
TeufelHund Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 I own and love this set, as do my sons, but I've always wondered - why does Penguin have a fish? Is this just some kind of joke around Penguins eating fish or does it actually have some significance? Quote
Brickus Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 I think it is a reference to Batman Returns, where Penguin eats a raw fish. Quote
JVM Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Really wanrt this set. Don't even care if I get the minis right away. It's pretty much the most beautiful Super-Heroes set in terms of actual build and locale I've seen. If I would've known this was coming I might've saved up earlier. Quote
The Jersey Brick Guy Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 It's been out for a few months. But it is a fun build with the ability to have it grow also. Quote
kermit Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 (edited) This set is so great with so many minifigures and details to the building. It is definitely a step up from the previous version. Everything about the set is awesome down to the gate and the transport truck. Edited October 15, 2013 by kermit Quote
Legoman123 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Could someone please explain to me why LEGO decided to put a cell nameplate in for Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze? It makes no sense at all as we already have a special cell for both of them. It would be a lot better if we got nameplates for Bane and The Riddler. Could someone please explain what logic there was in that? Quote
-obelix- Posted October 19, 2013 Posted October 19, 2013 Fantastic review, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! The set itself is very nice, but, unfortunately, the price puts it far out of my league for now... Quote
Kintobor Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 I'm considering buying the set, but I want some opinions, since this is a huge investment. ($210 Canadian. ) Any thoughts? Quote
Capt. Redblade Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Received this set for my birthday. I've only built the first two bags, but already I love it! Quote
Cammo Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) I don't know a single person who is disappointed with this set. One of the better sets last year. Although the minifigures in this set aren't as exclusive anymore because of the new sets coming out. You still have Harley Quinzel, Scarecrow & the black winged Batman. but I think Scarecrow will end up in another set eventually. It's still is my favourite Batman-set. My 'holy grails' licensed sets: PotC: Black Pearl Hobbit: Bag-End LotR: Mines of Moria DC: Arkham Asylum Edited November 17, 2013 by Cammo Quote

It's an iconic lego set of an iconic Batman location. It's a great build, looks fantastic when it's done, has great minifigs and some really nice details. It's also a lot of fun to play with. I got it last Christmas, and it's been a favourite with my kids and me ever since. Even if some of the minifigs variants are released next year, it doesn't stop the ones in the set being worth getting. And you can tinker with it too - change the cell bars for glass panels, alter the guard's desk, that kind of thing. Quote
montgocloud Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 My 'holy grails' licensed sets: PotC: Black Pearl Hobbit: Bag-End LotR: Mines of Moria DC: Arkham Asylum I would change "Mines of Moria" to "Tower of Orthanc" but other than that I think you're right on the money! Quote

My TRU still had a good number, and had them fairly well discounted the last time I looked. Quote
grymg Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) I have the money and am debating whether to grab the Asylum now or wait until Black Friday to get the free holliday truck. Not sure how crowded it will be or if it will still be in stock though. Decisions. . . Edited November 18, 2013 by grymg Quote
