January 31, 201312 yr @Allanp: Yes, concerning "unrivaled authenticity" i agree with you... so it depends of ones personal criterias if a model is very good or not... So let us agree that we disagree for the unimog but i see, understand and respect your points ... but the unimog is quite OT here so lets go back to topic ;-)
January 31, 201312 yr By the way, just wondering, in previous years, did the final 2H models differ significantly (if at all) from the models shown at the toy fairs in January? the unimog is quite OT here so lets go back to topic ;-) Thank you! Edited January 31, 201312 yr by jantjeuh
January 31, 201312 yr The tow truck uses 2 small cylinders, one to tilt the ttow thing and the other one to extends it. Anyone notice the red gears where the crane's outrigger axles slide? They seem to be the new 8 tooth gears? Dont they have friction? Those new red gears probably have holes like the 16t clutch gears ... Because even if they were frictionless, they would still turn the axle... Or are they meant to turn the axle..? Nevermind, they must be like this.. Edited January 31, 201312 yr by Paul Boratko
January 31, 201312 yr completey disagree - i never understood the hype of the unimog... besides the parts count it is only a good model but not a very good...reasons: - the unimof itself is good but this flimsy and tottery pneumatic crane is really a shame - 8868 has shown much better how to build a playable pneumatic crane - the unimog has a bad balance and always hangs down on one side because the suspension is too soft... - the steering lock is really a bad bad bad design - of course you can simply make it better but out of the box it is crap Overall IMHO the unimog is overhyped and therefore this new moble crane looks more promising in useabilty... Just my 2 cents As a matter of fact, in a bid to make some room for this year's treasures, I just got rid of my Unimog (hope I'm not swearing in church). More OT: One outstanding feature of 8421 was the ability to simultaneously extend/retract the boom en roll in/out the cable. I don't see this happening with the gearbox of 42009 as it has to serve more other functions. Or am I missing something??
January 31, 201312 yr By the way, any Germans around to translate what the German presenter is saying when handling the crane? I can understand some of it, but not all. nothing what you can not see ;-) One exception: he explains that the winch can pull up to 200g at the hook... all other explanations are: - lifting boom - extending boom - outriggers - 4 axle steering with different steering angles - V8 engine all of them you know already by just viewing the video
January 31, 201312 yr Because even if they were frictionless, they would still turn the axle... Or are they meant to turn the axle..? Yep, they drive the axles which in turn drive the mini LAs.

And he stresses the realism of the chassis through the different steering angles.
January 31, 201312 yr That new gear is pretty interesting... We've never had anything like that before..

Or am I missing something?? hmm, good point - IMHO this feature of 8421 is a MUST for motorized cranes with extending boom - if not this reduces playability a lot... another drawback you can see in the vid: the upperstructure seems to be a little bit tottery (the man always tries to stabilize it with one hand) - whereas the upperstructure of the 8421 slews quite stable...
January 31, 201312 yr Where's the mysterious speed racer or something set? EDIT: Action Race car Edited January 31, 201312 yr by Zblj
January 31, 201312 yr Yep, they drive the axles which in turn drive the mini LAs. I was looking at the 8 tooth gears on the far left side and seen that there was a red one in the middle and at first glance assumed that the axle passing through them was meant to possibly turn a different way, and then seen that there was also one on theo other side(that had 2) and realized that it had to turn the axle... Where's the mysterious speed racer or something set? EDIT: Action Race car I remember hearing about this as well... Maybe it is just another small pullback..? Didn't someone have a set number for it a few months ago..?
January 31, 201312 yr How hell can a designer make such a newbie mistake ? Silly sausage, what are you talking about? Whatever next? Doors AND windows in houses? Oh the sky is falling.
January 31, 201312 yr Maybe we should start a poll on who's happy or not with this years sets :) I can't understand why they didn't motorise the turret!
January 31, 201312 yr Maybe we should start a poll on who's happy or not with this years sets :) I can't understand why they didn't motorise the turret! Aye, you cant please everyone! I am "meh" about that crane, but i got 42000, 42006 and upcoming service truck is more then enough to keep me happy! It is normal to "not to like" stuff.
January 31, 201312 yr Please argue in other topics, as in offical 8110 one or via PM. Please do not tell other members what to do. If you fell staff intervention is needed, please report the post. To everyone else please keep this thread on topic, if spin off conversations start, please start a new thread about it and leave the link in here so anyone interested can discuss it there. I don't understand why it doesn't have LAZORZZZZ! It doesn't?! F*ck that sh*t! Neither of these posts help the thread in any way. Please refrain from making these types of posts.
January 31, 201312 yr Lolest thread for a while. Crane: eh, might be epic. Don't think they'll top it, from the video, I reckon it's at the limit for size / weight / strength / stability. Looks a bit unbalanced, 8421 had a nice compact, tough look. But eh, it's going to be fun right? Service truck: totally awesome If I was 12 (hrm, I'm not), I'd have loved that set, and the amount of rebuilding possibilities from it: plenty of wheels, motor, battery box, two types of LA, pneumatic pump and cylinders in all sizes, wide range of panels beams, axles, even string. Total dream birthday / christmas set for a kid who wants to play and MOC (and might not have the spending money for bricklink). Playability-wise, and for the amount of functions crammed into a small model, it might be the closest successor to 8868? o_O Neither of these posts help the thread in any way. Please refrain from making these types of posts. Yeah, so now I get a warning for arguing with mods, but the Lazorzzz post is LOL funny. It would do us no harm here to have a bit more humour and a bit less grrr. Edited January 31, 201312 yr by andythenorth
January 31, 201312 yr Just a note on the crane it has only 1 la for the boom, was sure it would have 2, also on the tow truck it's a nice idea when u lower the boom the rear stabilisers lift up themselves. I think you are wrong, it is clearly to see, that 42009 has 2 LAs for the boom (or did you mean this for the 42008 as well?), and for the 42008: i am pretty sure it is just a "fault" of the presenter, as he left that strange shaped stabilizers activated while showing the boom function. Cheers! Edited January 31, 201312 yr by agrof
January 31, 201312 yr Where's the mysterious speed racer or something set? EDIT: Action Race car May be this (left top) orange car on the shelve
January 31, 201312 yr By the way, any Germans around to translate what the German presenter is saying when handling the crane? I can understand some of it, but not all. "... get the stabilizers out and in. The boom can be lowered and of course be lifted. The arm is extendable to a length of 70 cm. You can attach 200 g of weight to/on the cable winch, the weight can be lowered and risen by PF. The 5-axle-style is new, four of these are gradually steered (if this is the right translation ), meaning every axle is moving in a different angle resulting in a realistic and precise driving pleasure. Whilst driving the pistions of the V8 motor move up and down to underline the realistic appearance." All in all no really new facts that couldn't be found out by watching the movie without sound.
January 31, 201312 yr May be this (left top) orange car on the shelve LOL. If that is it, there certainly isn't much "action" to it.
