DLuders Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 As noted before, there are numerous pictures of the Lego Technic 42009 Mobile Crane MkII set on this Hobbymedia.it webpage. On Flickr, The Bicycle Story made a circle around this unfinished-looking area -- what do you think it is for? Quote

CP5670 Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 It might just be the size of the 8L stop axle. They are increasingly using the stop axles everywhere these days, to the extent that some recent Technic sets include more of those than conventional axles. Quote
DLuders Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 How about part 2444 on the bottom of an IR receiver???? The 2444 "Plate, Modified 2 x 2 with Pin Hole" needs a Technic Pin to be firmly attached to the protruding axles on the 42009: Quote

I swear I see the end of that 2L grey pin with stop sticking out. The horizontal one not the vertical one. Quote
allanp Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 It might just be the size of the 8L stop axle. They are increasingly using the stop axles everywhere these days, to the extent that some recent Technic sets include more of those than conventional axles. I agree. Most Lego sets are bought by parents trying to find a birthday gift for their son or daughter. They see some relatively inexpensive Lego set in the local Toys-R-Us store, Wal-Mart, Argos, etc. and buy it. They won't go for the complex, 2,600-piece, $200+ Technic set because (1) it's too expensive, and (2) it looks too complex for their kiddie to handle. Besides, they are used to dealing with the Lego "System" studded-brick style of building (when their toddler may have worked with Lego Duplo blocks), and not with Lego "Technic" studless building style. As Blakbird, Paul Boratko and others have noted, many people still view Lego Technic as not being "real" Lego. I'm sure Lego Technic sales are increasing but TLG learned from its difficult years when it lost money. It's being CAUTIOUS since much of the world is in economic doldrums right now. I kinda think that kids live in a more ask and have world than ever, where they see something on telly and go "I want that!" and usually get it. The kids don't give a hoot about the economy. I'm not sure the parents get to do a whole lot of the choosing. The aunties and uncles probably get to choose more but they don't spend as much. Quote
Technic Gearhead Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I'm not sure what is going on with that image but mine will not look like that! Quote
Lipko Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Hmm, that axle end thing is pretty sloppy. I understand it's because the 8L with stop axles, but couldn't they put bushes on them? (Don't tell me to put them there myself if I buy the set.) Quote
tduby Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 are the tires on the new crane the same as the unimog or the same as on 8421? Quote
dr_spock Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 The tires on the crane appears to be same type as 8421, 8258... I think the big expensive sets are more of the grandparents type gifting. Quote
captainmib Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Remember when the first images of 42000 appeared, the ones from the E-bay auction, that the model wasn't put together very well. That might be the issue here. A small percentage of my brain hopes that TLG will do some tweaking on the crane. (like they did on the service truck) Covering the ugly batterybox, and the right front of the superstructure. There is something unfinished about that triangle construction. Still, really looking forward for both 42008 and 42009. Would like to have both! Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 I don't mind the 8L axles sticking out too much, but I'm not a fan of the 2 pin with bushing parts sticking out. Looks incomplete. It's not the most refined looking set, but I will buy it because the mechanical bits are going to be really fun to put together. Quote
S.I Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Its still likely to go through another iteration or two for tweaking, at the fairs they display the type/size of models for Q3, but they still have a couple of months until they have to start production. Quote
Strikeman Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 (edited) I was still in my dark ages when the previous mobile crane came out, so this year is really going to hurt my wallet just today I bought 42004 and 42006 and now I already know what I'm going to have to buy next I do not know what the fuss is all about, there's too much text to read in this thread, damn I'm 2 days offline and this information comes along ... I for one love the green truck and I LOVE the mobile crane so whatever you guys decide, I'll be wanting and buying them both just like all those 12 year olds you're all talking about ! Edited February 2, 2013 by Strikeman Quote
skylinedan Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I,d have to agree, someone forgot too put the bushes on the ends. I just finished a 8258 and they put them on all the axles that extend past a lift arm or what ever. The last few pages are a funny read, people pissing n moaning about how a set doesnt look like a real crane made by a real company< LOL. Its LEGO people, get over it. This is gonna be a really cool set I can see it already, and we all know the mods to it are gonna be unreal after people get their hands on it later this year. far as not liking what TLG offers us, build your own crane., see what you end up with. You cant make everyone happy, but I can say I,m not one of those people, LOL. Dan Quote
dhc6twinotter Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I found a rear view of the crane: I just noticed that LEGO is using the grey 1L bushings in this set. I hated the red bushings in the Unimog, so I'm pretty happy they went with the grey ones on this set. The Service Truck is really growing on me. The aesthetics are fantastic; I love the colors, and the front end has a very retro 1950's or 1960's look to it. Way cool. Quote
Aussie BJ Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 This crane sure is a nice set and many thanks to all those who have been posting photo's and videos. Looks like it's going to have a million parts which should come in very handy. I've told my son (7) we won't buy any lego this year and save our money and buy the new Mindstorm EV3. Now how do I tell him I prefer this crane and service truck instead? Quote

skylinedan Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I,m gonna have to get two of these for sure, I see a XL version in the making, LOL. Surprised no one commented on the use of the 6 hole half pulley's in the rims< i dont think I,ve seen TLG do that in a set till now. Dan Quote
Technic Gearhead Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 It's a beauty, that's for sure! I have some minor color tweaks in mind already although it looks pretty good straight up. Quote
rener Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Great post han and well summed up, I have to agree tho that this so is no better than 8421 apart from the outriggers. Well, I think that LA's instead of pneumatics for lifting the boom makes a big difference in favour of 42009. If the L-motor gives enough power to lift, they might be the viagra 8421 lacked... Quote
skylinedan Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I keep looking at it, and think. That thing is gonna be a blast to build, LOL. I see one thing I would change for sure, I,d get rid of the battery box and use the smaller one, then close the back up with either system bricks or panels of some sort. More likely panels to keep with the feel of it though, which will make it more of a challenge. This is gonna be one of those sets that's gonna be fun to mod and make improvements too. Dan Quote
Rishab N Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I don't think that red switch opens the outriggers as it just looks like a red http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=32034 attached to a grey http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=41677 I found a rear view of the crane: Quote
Technic Gearhead Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) I don't have a problem with the battery box at all - looks cool with its design, much moreso than that ugly, antiquated, system block looking 8421 battery box. The red piece looks like a placeholder for a switch that controls the motorization of the yet to be implemented PF turntable rotation. Would that make all of the haters happy then? You just flip up that lid on the chassis for access to the second battery box. Edited February 3, 2013 by Technic Gearhead Quote
