Jim Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 (edited) I love this model. It seems to have it all What's wrong with these wheels btw? I think the 42008 will be one of the best tow trucks lego has made,it has all the main functions of what a real tow truck has. Has any one tried calling that phone number on the side of the truck? Hehe, if I am not mistaken all 555 numbers are fake, and mostly used for movies. Maybe a US resident can confirm this. Edit: partially confirmed: http://en.wikipedia....elephone_number). Seems that this number could exist Edited February 8, 2013 by Gekke Ted Quote
Pauger Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 What's wrong with these wheels btw? They are too fat, don't you think? 62.4x20 has perfect proportions. It would also be nice to have suiting wheels in different sizes. If you're mocing a semitrailer for example. Quote
gmshades Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Yeah, it looks very nice. A shame they haven't made some proper truck wheels on this scale. These wheels have been used on 4(?) trucks now and yet no bells are ringing it seems. I use the wheels off of 8071 Bucket Truck for front wheels. Using the wheels they have on the back are like "super singles" we use in the states in place of true duels. So in a way they are a better solution than running singles on the larger trucks like the log truck. Wish they would make wider wheels in the larger scale. Quote
BooTheMightyHamster Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 I wasn't sure about 42008 when I first saw it, but I have to agree with francisalmario - it's growing on me. Well the design is anyway. I don't think I'm ever going to like that green! Quote
Ondra Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Try this in GTA 4, 555 numbers works here. Quote

TBS Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Hi you, for all those interessted i did a little counting of what we get with 42008 which i find exceptional great. i just love this set. 42009 does look very good, but its just a giant parts pack to me, as i am "not into cranes" somehow. I have heard it comes within the Unimog price range. While the Unimog had a lot of new part-molds and pneumatic as well as some PF, they seem able to keep the prices because 42009 has just a battery box and an L-Motor, besides tons of standard parts. (from an production point of view) Lets get back to my analysis of the service truck. Mainly the new green parts. The chance to get us green liftarms thick 1x3, 1x5, and 1x11 must be passed on another possible future sets. It would have been a great chance, but there is a restriction of how many lots are stocked by lego a year. its around 7000 i think. I am very thankful the Lego-Designers decided to do such a model in green, an with all the nice new beams and this extraordinary parts variety within this set. Biggest Thumbs up from me. As a summary, here is what i counted. No guarantee, might have missed some (invisible). Green parts: Liftarm: 1x3 thin - 18 1x7 - 4 1x9 - 7 1x13 - 6 3x5 corner - 21 or more (there is a chance for 2less and 2 - 1x5 next to the first vertical panel 5x11 - but only the Instruction can tell us...) Panels: 5x11 - 5 Small ones - 2 of each Micro ones 3 of each Red: Micro ones red - 2 of each Black: Curved 3x11 old version - 3 New thin liftarm +000+ - 4 or more. Other good stuff: Pneumatic cylinder small - 2 Compressor - ( i hope the 6L-Unimog one ) - 1 Pneumatic valves - 2 Linear Actuator - 1 Mini Linear Actuators - 2 and a nice bunch off gears... I will have to buy some service trucks extra i guess... The small 42001 set seems to be very disappointing. It is hanging on the hook of 42009 in one of the youtube-videos. Spotted in orange: 2 thin liftarms 1x3, one pair of the micro panels and i assume 2 orange bionucle tooths. Rest, a few standard parts. The 9390 Minimog did this way better. 42005 is also one to pass... Cu Tom Quote
Technic Gearhead Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I was hoping for a little more orange on the small one too, Tom! Quote
Rishab N Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) I found pics of the box of 42009 If someone has already posted this then I'm sorry for the repost Edited February 10, 2013 by Rishab N Quote
dr_spock Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) Why is TLG producing yet ANOTHER mobile crane?! I dont understand why almost every year have a set that is a crane. tim Because there is another generation of kids coming up who didn't have a crane yet. It is the cycle of life. Or Lego product life cycles. Besides I like cranes and am happy Lego is catering to my needs. Edited February 10, 2013 by dr_spock Quote
TechnicMati Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) For me making 42009 by TLG is understandable as 8421 came long ago. New crane looks much better, has got much better proportions. Not to mention better functionality, playability due to more accurate boom lowering and rising mechanisms. Plus I don't have the old 8421 crane, probably I am not alone. Generally I am very satisfied with this year technic models. Hope to see some new pf elements next year: maybe small xs motor or part helping to control pneumatic cylinders? I am very interested what 42009 B model is going to be: harbour crane like in 8053 or crane truck with hds or anything else? Edited February 10, 2013 by TechnicMati Quote

If you had 8421 u would change ur mind , it's a great set and a technic icon and will never be replaced. There's a reason it's so expensive to buy :) Quote
Interceptor Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Totally agree with Davidmull on 8421, it is an icon, and hardly ever can be beaten in the era of LAs Quote
merman Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Still 8421 has flaws. The pneumatics being the major one. Lowering/crashing the boom simply by letting the air out is really lame. Quote
Pauger Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Merman, your post is #666 and you are criticizing 8421. Honestly though, I agree with you. I have 8421, and have tried for a long time to understand why people think it's so great... haven't got any wiser. Quote

rener Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 It's a realistic set. People need to get over the crashing boom :) Very funny! Can't recall the last time I saw a crashing boom though... Oh wait, it was my 8421, which didn't even manage to stay up with an "untelescoped" boom... Quote
TechnicMati Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 (edited) It's a realistic set. People need to get over the crashing boom :) it's all about how u work it! When finally as an adult I decided to come back to Lego Technic I searched for functionailty (playability) - as I wanted it to give me the same or similar fun as ready-built rc models. Probably 8297 offroader was an inspiration for me to come back to Lego Technic since my childhood. It was 8297 with 2 rc buggy motors that I saw on youtube. I was pretty amazed how after all these years Lego finally lets anybody to built cars that look nice, are rc playable, are fast, have enough power - have functionality and playability. Right now I am working on MOC (trial truck) with servo motor for steering, 2 speed gearbox, offroader suspension. In the end I want this model to look much as a real car and function properly as well. So not only appearance is what I look for in technic sets but functionality (playabilty) is important as well. And coming back to 42009 topic and making all pneumatic's enthusiasts satisfied I see a great possibility for a nice and realistic mod: small pneumatic cylinders (or even big pneumatic cylinders?) plus compressor instead of mini LAs to control 42009's outriggers. merman Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Oops post #666 and I still love 8421. It is just with all these studless sets and the arrival of PF, 8421 looks a bit dated. Yet, it is an amazing set... Quote

timslegos Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Wow those prices are really high, is there any reason why TLG has been upping the prices lately? tim Quote
