nicjasno Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Has anybody seen this yet and does anyone know this user? http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=legotor That opens a whole new world of lego trains. I like trains, but the lego ones are just too small and don't allow much in terms of technic stuff and detail. What gauge is that anyway? Quote
Brickthus Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 He has some G-gauge and some on standard LEGO track. Have you thought about 8mm scale LEGO trains? This is 8+ wide for UK, 10+ for US or EU prototypes, 1 stud to the foot scale. I've done this since 1996. So far I have 10 diesels, 7 steamers and a 4-car tilting Pendolino EMU. I just built a new diesel shunter with Power Functions for speeds of 0.5 to 20mph in 2 gears and onboard decoupling. You can run standard LEGO train motors and wheelsets or use Technic motors with Power Functions. Mark Quote
nicjasno Posted December 30, 2012 Author Posted December 30, 2012 I want to go bigger, not smaller. I haven't bothered with trains so far, because of the small size. But if i can have a 12 wide train instead of 6 wide, this opens up a whole new dimension. Quote

Duq Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I guess you're also familiar with Rene Kok's pneumatic engines: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=2128722 Standard gauge is 1435mm, L-gauge is 37.5mm. That makes for a scale of 1:38. At that scale European trains should be 10 wide. The problem isn't the width of the track, the problem is that trains at scale-length and width are too heavy for Lego motors and the standard curves are way too tight. With pneumatics the motor problem is resolved and with the new track options from ME-Models and BBB the curve problem is resolved. So nothing should be stopping you. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing NicJasno trains.... Quote
Anticyclone Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 nicjasno, I have a large scale LEGO engine I just finished building actually. I should post a pic tomorrow so you can see. I too have been interested in building trains in larger scales, specifically 1:22.5 which is what many garden railway trains are modeled in. Like Duq already mentioned, these trains are heavy and the poor locomotive can barely pull it's own weight without the addition of side rods. I might install a Bachmann can motor and run it off track power. Quote
