hi there

I am intersted in chromed parts is it parts that is just sprayed over or is it metal parts i saw a lot of them on bricklink

is it at all possible to do yourself is there anyone who knows more about this

would be thankfull

They are regular parts, coated.

Some sellers provide the option that you send them parts you want to be chromed, they done it for you, and they send it back.

It is very hard to do it yourself.

I'm curious about this too.

Can you use regular chrome spray paint? Is there anything you should do to prepare them, like sanding them gently or washing them with that "oxy-something" detergent that re-whitens yellowed white bits? How many coats?

Do the bricklink shops that sell chromed parts just spray them, or do they use some special method? I doubt electroplating would work on plastic, but something similar to that.

Spray paint is a terrible way to go for chroming parts. The paint will be too think and never looks chrome to me, always metallic grey like the silver champion. The shops that sell custom chromed parts on bricklink will more than likely have them sent out to a proffesional facility that specialises in chrome plating. The best way to go would be to find a seller on bricklink that either sells the parts you want already or if not, can have them chromed for you. I would not advise trying to find a company yourself because, unless you are getting large quantaties done, you will not get the same bulk discounts as a bricklink seller might get and more importantly because results vary hugely. The bricklink sellers will have a tried and tested supplier for chromed parts so it's much more likely that you'll get good results.

Wow. I did a bit of reading, thinking maybe I could look into doing this as a hobby project (I've got a little bit of a background in Chemistry), but got as far as the MSDS on chromic-sulfuric acid and I've decided to leave it to the professionals :sceptic:

I'm glad I found this topic, cause I was meaning to ask about something similar;

Does anyone know of any places (bricklink stores, non Lego related resources, whatever) that deals with custom chrome-jobs?

I've contacted both of the stores that Sariel is mentioning above, and didn't quite get the answers I needed..

I have two of these gears which I very much would like in silver chrome to a project I have going on.

There are two answers to your need for chromed pieces:

http://www.bricklink...e.asp?p=Aurimax

http://www.bricklink...?p=ChromeBricks

And that's pretty much all there is to be said :)

I may just add that Chrome Block City accepts to chrome parts on requests.

This helps A LOT.

And Aurimax is a veryyyyyyy nice seller. The best and kindest seller I did business with (I did more than 250 orders, with probably 200 different sellers).

I did indeed speak with him yes, and he said that he could add the piece I need in his inventory. But not in 6-8 weeks..

Olso in the netherlands you have a bricklinck store and they delevery and make every ABS parst in real chromed bricks http://www.bricks4all.nl/

Thank you for this link! Just sent the store an e-mail, so I guess we'll wait and see. Seems quite impossible to get specific gears chromed..

If you send him the pieces you need to be chromed, and you hit the moment when he's preparing a new batch for chroming, he can be a lot faster.

Yeah he said that he recently sent 16 kg (!) of parts for chroming, so I guess that's out of the window. But I got myself a deal with the owner of Chrome and Engrave!

Excited to see how this turns out!

A hubcap I sent to Aurimax for custom chroming: before (left) and after (right). Note that the plastic LEGO uses for hubcaps is somewhat elastic, making chroming tricky:

Wow, that looks really nice! Can't wait to see them being used on what I hope will be an awesome supercar!

Talked to the owner of Chrome and Engrave again yesterday. He has received my gears, and they've now begun the process. Will post some pics when I get them :classic:

How do chromed parts wear? Do they do inside the connector holes and if so does that affect the fit of pins and other connectors?

They cover almost all surfaces with chrome film. Naturally, that makes a piece slightly larger, and it fits in axle pins and other connectors more tightly.

I use a lot of chrome. I work together with bricks4all.nl in The Netherlands. As far as I know he is the only one providing true electroplated bricks, so with true chrome. I also buy from Auri sometimes, but I prefer the electroplated bricks from Bricks4all most, because they just shine a bit more, and are very tough.

I have jused for mine last 2 moc's chromed parts of Bricks4all and he is the best there is i think  .

People talking about gearing, i can confirm it is a problem. You cannot chrome gears by electroplating. I have tried a couple of times but they fail, probably due to geometry or material composition. I have bought some sprayed chrome parts gears a couple of times, but they wear quite fast.

Here my latest trailer, a halfround endump trailer with a lot of chrome :classic:
