Captain Pirate Man Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Probably an entertaining watch but a bad film according to the critics - like the other Pirates films that aren't Curse of the Black Pearl. I'm not sure what you are implying here? I personally could care less what critics think, most of the time. They are too far up their own rear ends to see anything objectively anyways. If a film is entertaining, fun, and enjoyable that means it is a good film imo. As long as it doesn't have major plot holes or sloppy writing anyways. I think we have already admitted (unaimously for the most part) that 2, 3, and 4 all have their fare share of issues. Quote
LEGODalekbuster523 Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 I'm not sure what you are implying here? Just that the film may be enjoyable for casual audiences but it might not get good reviews from the critics, as with most of the films. Quote
Pulp Detective Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 I'm with Captain Pirate Man on this one.The critics are a bunch of journalists who get paid to write their opinion about a movie. And because of that they act like their opinion is better than the average viewer. But what annoys me the most is that most people view the critics opinions like it's the word of the God,it's like they are unable to form an opinion about the movie themselves. The PotC movies are fun, enjoyable with good writing and characters. But if you're looking for oscar nomines then you're looking at the wrong neighbourhood. Quote
Captain Pirate Man Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 (edited) If you like Pirate releated things (films, Lego, ships, etc) then the POTC films are really the ONLY show in town. I wish it weren't that way, but it is what it is. Same goes for LOTR. I wish other fantasy genere films would succeed, but they don't. So as long as they are the ONLY films in town, I will support them. Sure the POTC films, and The Hobbit films have flaws. But I enjoy them, and will continue to support them (no matter what changes Peter Jackson makes to the source material), for all the reasons I stated earlier. Pulp Detective Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Well there is also Black Sails. It's a tv show similar to Game of Thrones but instead of the fantasy and medieval elements that GoT has it focuses on pirates. It's pretty much a prequel to the Treasure Island book,it takes place 10 years before the events of the book and the main characters are Captain Flint and Long John Silver. The fourth and final season will air this january. If you haven't seen it I suggest you give it a shot,it's a good and underrated show. Quote

To be honest with you, I did watch a couple of episodes, and I did enjoy it for The most part. But I have the same problem with it, that I do with Game of Thrones, the nudity. Some of the scenes in those shows are almost soft core cable porn. I'm married with kids, and I don't really approve of those sort of things anymore. I don't really feel it adds anything to the story, in fact I feel it takes away from it. I don't mean to be prudish, but that's how I feel about those shows. Yea the nudity is unecessary and I think they add it just for shock value.Other than that it's completely pointless and doesn't add anything to the story, thankfully those scenes are short so I don't have to skip them. And when it comes to GoT I have to say the nudity has decreased in the later seasons, which is a good thing. ChiefPie Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 I decided to watch PotC 4 for the first time last night and it was pretty good. Excited to see the new one. I personally like that the movies are mainly around Jack. Quote
Captain Pirate Man Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 (edited) So with in the last 24 hours I have watched both the first and fourth again. I mean really watched them, not just had them on as background noise as I did other things. Doing this only solidified my feelings that the first is obviously the best and the fourth is REALLY the 2nd best. For the life of me, I don't know why the fourth one gets the hate that it does. Obviously everyone's opinions are different, but 2 and 3 have a LOT of "silliness" in them that drags them down imo. 1 and 4 are more reserved. Yes they have some as well, but it's more believable, not quite so over the top. I still like 2 and 3, and really like the idea of Davey Jones and the Kracken. Those two aspects carry those films imo. Its the over the top ridiculousness of fighting on top of a run away mill that I just can't look past. Edited September 30, 2016 by Captain Pirate Man Quote

And over the top, side splitting, holding my ribs because I'm laughing so hard, silliness is the Disney stock in trade. It's what they do... They're good at it! Quote

I know that the films will have a certain amount of over the topness to them, you are right, that's a given being they are Disney films. Like I said earlier, I don't mind and even accept a certain amount of it. But when they cross the line into just plain rediculousness, that's where they lose me. Like I said before, the entire climax of the 2nd film is just too far out there for me. Which is a shame, because the rest of the film I like a lot. The third film, I feel is the weakest of the 4 story wise. That's why I rank it last of the bunch. I don't mind the supernatural aspects of the films, I rather enjoy it tbh. But this is the one exception. I can get in board with ghost pirates, zombie crew, Davey Jones fish crew, etc. But when Calypso grows to be 50 ft tall, I just don't feel it. Also I don't like where they took Elizabeth Swans character in that film, I am just annoyed by her after 20 mins or so. But these are just MY opinions. For the record I still Like those 2 films, even though it might come across that I don't. I just find the 4th to be superior is all. Quote

I think it helps those 2 movies from being too dark. They are already very dark with that comedy and over the topness... Quote
LEGODalekbuster523 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 At this stage, Pirates of the Caribbean would probably fare better as a TV Series. That way they could develop the characters and storylines more. Quote
N-4K0 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 I like Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, although I must admit I always skip to the first encounter of the Dutchman in both movies the rare times I bother watching them. I think the Dutchman's entrance in AWE, bursting through the surface of the sea before demolishing a fleet of pirate ships is perhaps the most epic scene in PotC. I can see though how they can be considered weak, but to me they kinda feel like 2 parts of a single movie, kinda makes them feel better IMO. Quote

Even with the infusion of new characters, the 4th installment was easily the weakest of the series. If that was the best that they could do, well... ... I can see it running for about 6 weeks and getting cancelled. Maybe a mini-series would work. In the end though, I will go see the new movie (in a theater) when it does come out. On a related note: They already lost Knightley as Swann. How many more times do you think they can get Depp to revisit Capt. Jack? (After all, he still hasn't been properly rehabilitated yet.) Black Spot/Dead Man's Chest/World's End was a natural trilogy. Quote
Captain Pirate Man Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 @Rotondus, What about the 4th one makes you feel it is "easily" the weakest? The lack of Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom? Quote
N-4K0 Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 One thing with On Stranger Tides I feel is kind of a flaw is that the quest for the Fountain of Youth was done all within a single movie. One of the things that feel like a downside to me is that Blackbeard only got this one movie. I feel like the quest for the Fountain could have been divided into two movies (of course done so that there was enough progress and content in both movies), which would also make Blackbeard feel like a better villain IMO with more screen time. Quote
Captain Pirate Man Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 I agree, it would have been better as two films. IMO enough story is there to stretch it out. A ship fight between the QAR and Black Pearl would have been epic to see on screen. The reason it didn't was because they literally turned the Black Pearl into the QAR for the film (probably to save on costs). Even though most of the filming is done in sound stages, some shots are needed of an actual ship. Im sure it's pretty expensive to get ALL those different ships together. But having said all of that, it would have been cool to see. I was watching DMC last night, and another part I forgot about that I don't like is the scenes with the Islanders. That whole sequence got stretched out and lasted far too long. It doesn't serve ANY purpose (plot wise) and is over the top ridiculous. The way Gibbs and Will escape from those "prisons" is EXACTLY what I don't like about these films. I agree, everything concerning Davey Jones, the Kracken, and the Flying Dutchman in these films is great. But it's mixed in with scenes that I can't wait to be over. I don't feel the fourth film suffers from this problem. I also can't stand how they just "killed off" the kracken off screen. That's sloppy writing imo. The Kracken was freaking awesome and needed a proper on screen conclusion. Every time I watch that scene in AWE I can envision suits sitting in a room somewhere thinking "we have no idea what to do with the kracken, so let's kill it off screen." Quote
N-4K0 Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 I agree that they should have shown the Kracken being killed. Since Jones was ordered to kill it by Beckett, I assume it died from the Dutchman's cannons in some way, and just the sound of that would have been great to see. Perhaps having a scene showing the hammer thing being used to call out the Kracken, then having the cannons killing it, later followed by the Dutchman emerging from the sea ambushing the pirate fleet where the Dutchman makes its entrance in AWE. Captain Pirate Man Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 Having said everything I've said in this thread in reguards to films 2 and 3, the scenes with the kracken might be THE best stuff of the entire series. So even though 2 has some things I don't like about it, it has some things I really like as well. If push comes to shove, I still prefer 4, but it's close. 3 is easily the worst of the series imo. But I still find a lot to like about it, but it is the weakest plot wise imo. Quote

Also I agree with LEGODalek-buster that movies 1,2 &3 constituted a naturally concluded story line arc, and OST kind of just tags along. 17 hours ago, Error404 said: One thing with On Stranger Tides I feel is kind of a flaw is that the quest for the Fountain of Youth was done all within a single movie. Agreed. If Stranger Tides had been the beginning of a new story arc, I think I could have accepted it better. Indeed Blackbeard could have been an impressive villain. Before I say much more, I think I will have to view it again. (As if I need an excuse to do that!) Edited October 2, 2016 by Rotundus Quote
1980-Something-Space-Guy Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 Well but POTC 4 was sort of a spin-off, and a break from the main series. I found it refreshing, but I know my opinion is not very popular. Quote
