darwin316 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) Hi guys, recent AFOL here... started collecting lego last year when my wife gave birth to our twins. I decided to start their collection early :D Anyways, here is my first MOC so take it easy on me. I decided to maintain the playability of the official set (except for the tomb catapult) while maintaining the layout of the movie. Unfortunately, the length of the set was limited by the size of the gray baseplate. -The back wall has a small window for light to shine through when Gimli entered the chamber. It also has the broken wall portion similar to the movie. -The middle pillars fall just like the original set. -The lever for the well goes through the back wall for actuation. I didn't want any of the levers to be visible within the set. Edited January 16, 2013 by darwin316 Quote
Tobias_Jay Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Wow, you should be proud of this. What a great mod to an already great set. I love the little cameo of Gollum too! Quote
SirBlake Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I think you did a great job. I'd like to do something very similar. Great inspiration. Quote
large88 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Wow, great job! I like how you kept the play features in your creation. Quote
ZCerberus Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Good job- but these pictures are larger than the site allows. Please keep linked images to a max of 800 x 600 Quote
Bob De Quatre Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Really nice! I wanted to do something like that, but I guess I'll never will... I would have gotten rid of the chest, as it has nothing to do with the movie. Quote
darwin316 Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) Thanks guys! Feedback is appreciated. And yeah, I had Gollum just sitting around so I decided to let him have a small cameo, lol. I kept the chest for now for playability since I'm designing the sets for the twins to enjoy....in 4-5 years! But yeah, it's pointless to the movie. I also edited the main post to reduce the size to 800x600 (thanks on that clarification, Zcerberus, I wasn't aware of it) and included additonal pics. Edited January 16, 2013 by darwin316 Quote
Bytor Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Looking good, I think i might have to build myself one of these! How may sets did you have to buy to build this? Quote
-Carson Haupt- Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I agree the chest wasn't important in the movie, but there was a bunch of stuff lying around, and it helps with the cluttered look. Quote
deskp Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 (edited) Great job, I love MOCs that incorporate the lego made sets! ( I do think your placement of Gollum sort of breaks it abit to, He'd be better hiding behind a pillar or inside one of the hole-things) Edited April 17, 2013 by deskp Quote
LegoLotRGuy Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 Really awesome moc! FWI Gimli and Pippins torsos are switched. Quote
darwin316 Posted April 17, 2013 Author Posted April 17, 2013 Thanks guys! Looking good, I think i might have to build myself one of these! How may sets did you have to buy to build this? It just needed an extra set, which i was able to get at ebay without the figs. I did use some parts from my own bin though. Great job, I love MOCs that incorporate the lego made sets! ( I do think your placement of Gollum sort of breaks it abit to, He'd be better hiding behind a pillar or inside one of the hole-things) Gollum was just there for a "where's waldo?" moment, lol. He has been moved from the set. Really awesome moc! FWI Gimli and Pippins torsos are switched. Didn't realize that, thanks! Quote
Deathleech Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 That's pretty cool! It just goes to show you what a "complete" Mines of Moria set would look like (and cost). While it definitely looks more complete and cooler than the official set, I am not sure double the cost (extra MoM set pieces, +$15 large gray baseplate, plus extra loose bricks from personal collection?) is worth it when it doesn't really add any play features for kids. I mean the official set still gives a pretty good feeling. Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 Nice work!! I love the more "complete" feeling that it gives to the scene. Quote
Automaton Creations Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Wait . . . This is your first MOC!?!?!?!?!? Brilliant job! Good job hiding Gollum! I love doing that in my MOcs! Quote
