CamelBoy68 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 With my recent purchase of 2 x HEs, it quickly becomes apparent that the stations like 7937 are a little short which got me thinking about modular platforms. Here are my first two that I'm happy with: First up, a side platform, which can incorporate buildings / stairs etc... and secondly, an island style platform. The island fits in the 8 stud gap between two tracks. The clearance in wide enough for a HE, but I think will need adjusting to fit an Emerald (I don't have one at the mo to test ) The height is 2 & 2/3 bricks, which seems to be the norm. Any thoughts ? flickr Quote
gazumpty Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 A really simple and elegant solution CamelBoy68. I'm dying to start working with lego trains and this gives me some inspiration to get on with it! Quote
robt Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Those platforms look great! Nice creation. I see you used a lot of small plates to reproduce tiles layout. I'd like to create some of them, but I think that they could costs too much with all those pieces. Perhaps you could simplify it to decrease parts and price. Quote
CamelBoy68 Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 Hi robt, there are not as many tiles as you think.... The only tiles used are 5x (2 x 2) in light bluish grey (which can be removed for attaching structures etc) 6x (2 x 2) in black, giving support underneath the platform 4x (1 x 4) in white along the edge All the rest are 2 x 4 or 1 x 2 bricks here's an exploded view of the island platform. eurotrash Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 That exploded view makes a lot more sense. It's a very effective design you've got going on there. Thanks for sharing it with us. Quote
robt Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Thanks CB68. Could you please post the inventory list? I'd like to check how much it could cost on BL. Quote
UrbanErwin Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 looks usefull now I need a passengertrain. Quote
CamelBoy68 Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 For the Single Platform the parts are: 4 x 2431 (Tile 1 x 4) in White 2 x 2456 (Brick 2 x 6) in Black 14 x 3001 (Brick 2 x 4) in Light Bluish Gray 2 x 3004 (Brick 1 x 2) in Black 4 x 3004 (Brick 1 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray 1 x 3020 (Plate 2 x 4) in Black 2 x 3021 (Plate 2 x 3) in Black 2 x 3021 (Plate 2 x 3) in Light Bluish Gray 1 x 3022 (Plate 2 x 2) in Black 1 x 3022 (Plate 2 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray 2 x 3036 (Plate 6 x 8) in Black 6 x 3068b (Tile 2 x 2 with Groove) in Black 8 x 3068b (Tile 2 x 2 with Groove) in Light Bluish Gray 4 x 3460 (Plate 1 x 8) in Light Bluish Gray 2 x 3460 (Plate 1 x 8) in Yellow 2 x 3700 (Technic, Brick 1 x 2 with Hole) in Black 4 x 3700 (Technic, Brick 1 x 2 with Hole) in Light Bluish Gray 5 x 3795 (Plate 2 x 6) in Black 4 x 3956 (Bracket 2 x 2 - 2 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray 1 x 4282 (Plate 2 x 16) in Black Cost on BL (Uk Stores with Highest Qty) is roughly £5.98 (excl delivery & track... ) For the Island platform the parts are: 8 x 2431 (Tile 1 x 4) in White 6 x 3001 (Brick 2 x 4) in Light Bluish Gray 4 x 3004 (Brick 1 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray 2 x 3007 (Brick 2 x 8) in Black 2 x 3021 (Plate 2 x 3) in Black 2 x 3021 (Plate 2 x 3) in Light Bluish Gray 2 x 3022 (Plate 2 x 2) in Black 5 x 3022 (Plate 2 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray 2 x 3023 (Plate 1 x 2) in Black 2 x 3023 (Plate 1 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray 2 x 3036 (Plate 6 x 8) in Black 6 x 3068b (Tile 2 x 2 with Groove) in Black 8 x 3068b (Tile 2 x 2 with Groove) in Light Bluish Gray 8 x 3460 (Plate 1 x 8) in Light Bluish Gray 4 x 3460 (Plate 1 x 8) in Yellow 4 x 3700 (Technic, Brick 1 x 2 with Hole) in Light Bluish Gray 3 x 3832 (Plate 2 x 10) in Black 7 x 3956 (Bracket 2 x 2 - 2 x 2) in Light Bluish Gray 1 x 4282 (Plate 2 x 16) in Black 2 x 4282 (Plate 2 x 16) in Light Bluish Gray Cost on BL (Uk Stores with Highest Qty) is roughly £6.58 (excl delivery & track... ) Obviously you could exchange some of the longer pieces 2 x 16 and make them 2x (2 x 8) and the same with the base plates 6 x 8 in black - as I imagine that it wouldn't matter what color it is as it will be obscured by the layout. English Electric Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) These are nice, I like how you have incorporated the prototypical yellow line that we have on platforms in the UK. Are these used elsewhere, I can't remember from my travels if I have seen them or not! Edited January 16, 2013 by English Electric Quote
robt Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Are these used elsewhere, I can't remember from my travels if I have seen them or not! They are used in Italy too. Quote
English Electric Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Perhaps ramps will prove to be more of a challenge? Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Nice design for a platform there. I have mine incorporated onto a baseplate that covers two tracks but they are modular so that extra bits can be incorporated if needed. I have done the same with the goods yard I am building. Quote
CamelBoy68 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 Perhaps ramps will prove to be more of a challenge? At first they were, but then I had a flash of inspiration... Side Platform with Ramp Island Platform with Ramp Quote
kieran Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 This is working out to be a very complete looking solution, thanks for sharing Quote
English Electric Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 At first they were, but then I had a flash of inspiration... Side Platform with Ramp Island Platform with Ramp Excellent, they look really good Quote
Darthluke824 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Wow! Very nice, reminds me of the station near me! And a very nice UK design! Quote
CamelBoy68 Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 Thanks for all the great comments, much appreciated and now the next stage in development - footbridge/stairs Again, using the same platform segments, I have incorporated some stairs: Side Platform Island Platform and joined them with a footbridge. The bridge could be extended to another island and/or side platform for bigger layouts. Quote
Luke_likes_Lego Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Great system CamelBoy68.......good looks, practical and an elegant façade hiding a well thought out design LLL PS. Australia has the yellow lines in many stations too Quote
bricks n bolts Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Looks great, any thoughts regarding lighting? Quote
kieran Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Just gets better and better, this is looking like a complete solution, very clever Quote
Lazarus Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 only thing i say would be needs hand rails and looks a little to steap for the steps. But loving the platforms keen to put the idea in my bin of stuff to add to layout. Quote
robt Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 (edited) Why don't you use original stairs? http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=30134 Edited January 25, 2013 by robt Quote
CamelBoy68 Posted January 25, 2013 Author Posted January 25, 2013 Why don't you use original stairs? http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=30134 no reason, just fancied doing something different given the available space and limited options for stairs. Quote
xangodango Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 This is beautiful, thanks for sharing. Does anyone have any pics of them put together in a layout or just a station? Quote
