crazy_1993 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 (edited) LDD FILE NOW RELEASED WITH PART LIST Hopefully LEGO won't sue me for this, but now if there's a Technic fan crazy enough out there, they can have a shot at building this! LDD couldn't generate a building guide for this on my laptop but anyone is free to try to generate one. This topic is now out of date! For information regarding the all new Enforcer Recharged CUUSOO entry, visit this topic! Originally, this was an entry for the 'You Design It, We Make It' competition but it ended up in second place to the Boss. The design was based on the idea of making a body design for the 9398 chassis that looked fuller and more robust than the original. I therefor chose the legendary Hummer H2 to be my inspiration which is shown in the images below: I could not exactly replicate the Hummer design due to copyright reasons. The design I eventually came up with after weeks of hard work is shown below: The body includes a manually operated winch which could easily be motorized, opening doors and tailgate, and the battery is changed in exactly the same way as the original body design. There is also a rear roof section which can be removed to give the choice between full bodied or pickup style forms. Because the Hummer has such a bulky design, I had to be careful to build lots of the body around the wheels to reduce the height and not just stick the body right on top of the 9398 chassis. Even though this is a virtual model, it is obvious that this will greatly optimize stability, not just by lowering the height, but by having much of the weight (around the doors) far lower than in other designs. I would also like to point out that the main purpose of this model is not to be able to crawl over very steep obstacles, but rather present a great building challenge and an imposing appearence while still being able to drive over everyday mildly rough terrain. Just days before the top 10 finalists were announced, I decided that this design would look brilliant in a police theme as there are many good examples of Hummers that have been adapted into police themed vehicles: The final result of my work was this, the Highway Enforcer: This design has exactly the same functions as the original but has a totally overhauled colour scheme and new accessories such as the police lighting and rear radio antennas. The new version was so successful that it was picked for the top 10 finalists over the original entry. Below are some images showing the LDD model in more detail: The first image shows the ground clearance and height of the body as well as showing the space above the wheels left for suspension travel. The second image shows the space under the beam structure used to maintain rigidity when hinging the bodywork to change the battery. It is also possible to make out some of the gearing for the winch. The third image shows some of the interior. There are only 3 seats because I could not fit 4 in due to the hinge mechanism positioning for the battery changing. I think that actually only 2 are needed as this would reduce weight and parts. The fourth image shows the door lock and hinge. The hinge actually contains 2 smaller hinges so that the door does not get stuck on the frame while opening and closing. The lock consists of the grey rotating part on the end of the door which slots in behind the door pillar when the handle is turned. The reason that this had to be a digital design is because I don't have anywhere near the number of parts to needed to build anything like a 4 x4 crawler real life. I played with LEGO all the time when I was a child but now I am at University and this is the only chance to do something amazing with LEGO that I have had since then. PsyKater Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Welcome on Eurobricks! You did a great job on creating the model and I would love seeing both models produced. Best luck on getting votes! Quote
Balrog Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 This is really a cool model worth buying. Just one question: Can you give us the partcount? Quote
crazy_1993 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 That would be amazing, but I think that t would be too expensive for LEGO to go through development with 2 models, but we can only hope. What would be amazing is a set with an A and a B model so you can build the Boss or the Highway Enforcer. Oh the part count would need to be improved in development because at the moment it is 2500 but this could be reduced by a few hundred by modifying certain areas. As a comparison, the Unimog has 2200 parts. The largest part count I know is the Ultimate Collectors Super Star Destroyer at about 3500 parts. Quote
DLuders Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 @ crazy_1993: Welcome to Eurobricks! I think that if the supporters of your entry would "spread the word" among their social circles, the Highway Enforcer could gain lots of votes! Quote
Tkavan01 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I really hope this wins, It was my second choice to the defender 90 the other ones just don't do anything for me! Quote
mobi Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I have voted for your model. However, if you want to win in this competition, you need to actively engage people via social networking, Lego groups etc. This is not really a competition of which model is best but more like who can make better marketing in social media. Quote
rm8 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 (edited) Welcome to Eurobricks, That is good that you posted it here. Shame that so late. But I am not sure that I will win. Sutuation can change. As I already sad - you are genious LDD creator. I dont like this scandalous situation around the challenge.Feel guilty. It will be better if there will be more than 2 top voters in the finals....but only two. It is very hot race. Last days I am thinking more and more that it would be better if Lego Technic Team select winner by themselves or make set 3 in 1 with top3 models. I believe, that Part count of you model is enough to build my model or for exampe hronots's. All our voters will be happy. May be we can ask them for that? Good luck. Samanen Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 This is my favourite among the challenge entries You got my vote a couple of days ago. Spread the word now and let's hope it wins! Quote
hrontos Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I dont like this scandalous situation around the challenge.Feel guilty. No need to feel guilty. If you did not post the info, somebody else would do it. LEGO selected the same competition model as is used for CUUSOO projects, but it probably does not work so well in such competitions. There is always some strong factor that makes people support "home" entries (created by member of a local forum or from some city, state etc.). This "team" spirit is always there. For this kind of competitions voting should be used to select top 10 or top 5 and than professional jury should come and select winners. To avoid that some entries will have strong team support and win just because of that. Otherwise it is only about better social marketing, not better design, since voting itself does not imply any obligation on the voting person. On CUUSOO there is a review process that has the final word to avoid this. And as a detail, entries should be better balanced: model with 1300+ parts cannot be in the same category as model with 2500+ parts. There should be some limits. Or estimated price info. Or something that will balance the advantage of many parts. Quote
crazy_1993 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 I do NOT blame rm8(8) for the situation at all. I may have been mistaken at first but it's just how the community has chosen to support his entry. I think that I should've advertised this model far sooner. As this is the first time I ahve done something of this magnitude, it did not come to my mind. I even thought that advertising may be against the rules but now I think about it, that would be stupid. As I am new to eurobricks, does anyone know how to simply paste, images into the editor because it works for my entry images but when I try to paste from Google images, the images either don't appear, or reduce to lots of code in preview mode. pint14 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I would only buy it beacause of the pieces. Bodywork is definitely too heavy for crawler chassis.(personally i think the BOSS should win :D) Quote
hrontos Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I would only buy it beacause of the pieces. Bodywork is definitely too heavy for crawler chassis. Many technic builders have similar opinion. However this model has strong "WOW" factor for kids and their parents, who are just average LEGO users and do not care that much about that. And that is the majority of target buyers. efferman presented behaviour of these high and heavy models in his video with his offroad delivery services. Quote
pint14 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I think its not normal if the crawler stand most of the time in one side with the suspension.(you can aslo see it at the video) Quote
denwilltec Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Hello and great work... well done, would be happy to buy it as a kit. Quote
hrontos Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I think its not normal if the crawler stand most of the time in one side with the suspension.(you can aslo see it at the video) Kid or parent without experience may treat this behaviour as a kind of problem with the suspension spring and may report them to customer service as deffective. That's probably why also the original crawler has only very simple body. TLG will probably reduce the enforcer's weight to avoid that. The only question is, how much will the design stay after the reduction. Quote
Tkavan01 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I would only buy it beacause of the pieces. Bodywork is definitely too heavy for crawler chassis.(personally i think the BOSS should win :D) the boss makes no sense as a crawler, I've seen all kinds of cars converted into 4 wheelers with monster tires(I have a landcruiser on 40 inch super swampers for mudding) they never look right and never perform... Why it doesent make sense? Beacause there is a muscle cars body on crawler chassis or what?? Quote

These real life comparisons are not good. People will just start arguing. Have you ever seen police highway car with crawling capabilities? Whatfor do you need high suspension chassis on a highway? May be on the road I drive every day to my office after the winter. If you start to compare with real life vehicles, only some challenge entries make really sense as real life vehicles. Meatman Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I think the top 3 voted models should make it and then the Lego team should pick the model that they feel makes the most sense and works best for them. I expect whomever's model wins will be completely redesigned anyway. Quote
TechnicMati Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 (edited) Crazy_1993 I still hope that you are able to win the competition but if this doesn't happen will you publish LDD file or the instructions to the public so that this masterpiece may see the sunlight? The Enforcer is such a nice, exciting and creative entry. As Meatman said it might be that Lego team would redesign the winning model (The Enforcer or The Boss) and propably I would change some elements in the Enforcer myself to make it little lighter (for example I would get rid off the side exhaust pipes or would redesign the front of the hood a little bit). I really love your model and already have some ideas how to mod, tweak this beauty a little bit. Your entry gives such a huge amount of possibilities for modders. Anyway Good Luck and congratulations for The Enforcer. Edited January 17, 2013 by TechnicMati Quote
crazy_1993 Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 The side exhaust pipes are actually the first thing that I would remove to save on weight as they do not look as cool as intended and there are already twin exhausts at the rear bumper. Also the door steps could be hugely simplified. Looking back, I don't know why I made them so thick, they only need to be one beam thick with maybe some grating for extra realism. However all that weight so low down may actually prevent tipping instead of cause it! Quote
TechnicMati Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 (edited) I understand your idea about putting much weight as low as possible and this is what makes this model so cool and different from other entries. It still has a respectful ground clearance on both sides and increases passengers safety while using handbrake during powerslides and drifting :) Edited January 18, 2013 by TechnicMati Quote
DLuders Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I still hope that you are able to win the competition but if this doesn't happen will you publish LDD file or the instructions to the public so that this masterpiece may see the sunlight? This cannot be done, because all 10 of the Finalists had to transfer all rights to the model designs to The Lego Group. Quote
