Blazej_Holen Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Those soldiers form the pictures look like bullets to me :D Original design from videogame is much more better but the effort is nice and I admire it. Nevertheless, original design is better. Quote
MAB Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Part of wave or not, it is indeed a successful set, in my opinion. Even several smaller sets are "exclusives" but they are part of the theme/production line. None of us really know if it is successful. We don't know how many were / are to be made, how many have sold / will sell, or how frequently they sell. It may be that lego had agreed to make a certain number in total, but only ships small numbers to distribution centres (due to it being large and slow selling). That would mean that it would go out of stock and put on short backorder. It's a nice set. It could have been better (final side in place, with a the possibility of opening like a dolls house or like a modular), although it gets decent reviews as it probably should do for a set that size. But we don't know if lego sees it as a (sales) success. Quote

But we don't know if lego sees it as a (sales) success. Well I defined it "successful" according to the opinions of persons who bought it: in the end the only way to know if a set is successful is to see if those who bought it are satisfied with their purchase Anyway it appear Lego don't feature openings very often in collector sets. Even the modular buildings (at least those I can think about right now) come without such feature. A "modular approach" on Orthanc would have been very appreciated, indeed. Much easier to move from room to room, among the other benefits Quote
Captain Braunsfeld Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 A lot of comments to comment. 8 councils is great. The Gondorian helmets are too big for my taste but silver is alright. Question: is there somewhere the information which LoTR has sold well or not so well? Quote
BrickSev Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Question: is there somewhere the information which LoTR has sold well or not so well? Just "guesswork", I suppose based on how many persons say to have bought them, their reactions, the number of times it went backorder (even though it can go backorder because they had very few sets in stock etc) data from sellers etc. Like I said, just "guesswork" Quote

For me, having a complete tower in which you could lift off the separate layers (or open separate layers like a dolls house) to see the features would have been nicer than having it open backed. In fact, I changed mine to do the former. Quote

I have difficulties in finding good angles when I take photos of my Parisian Restaurant for example Quote

Most of my recent MOCs are open at one side (despite being modular). Back to my question whether we can find out which set was a success - I think a look into the financial report might reveal how well they have done with LoTR in general, it won't give details. Does anybody know an insider? Quote
MAB Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I doubt you will get any financial details about LOTR sales. Lego don't give out such detailed information. They will say which themes are top, and I don't think LOTR will be up there. Quote
Faefrost Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Krazy Kastle Krak Guy has made a Gondorian Helmet! The prototype has already been posted but here is the final version: I will definitely buy some of them and I think they look better than the version Lego designed for the video game Here is the link to his BrickLink shop: http://www.bricklink...ore.asp?p=Dan76 Is it just me, or does anyone else think they would look more at home guarding the Emerald City of Oz then Gondor? OoooWeeeOoo WeeOoOoo! I doubt you will get any financial details about LOTR sales. Lego don't give out such detailed information. They will say which themes are top, and I don't think LOTR will be up there. Let's put it this way. The two other new themes that launched roughly alongside LoTR, Friends and SuperHeroes have both done so extraordinarily well that they gained the exceptionally rare "Evergreen" designation. Meaning they are more or less permanent recurring themes. So sadly no the Middle Earth lines are far from the top of that list. Quote

Like I said just "guesswork" and I too think LOTR won't be on top which is sad because it has great potential and not only for fans of the saga but also for everyone interested in Fantasy and historic themes. Let's hope something will change, unlikely but we can still hope Quote
Dustin Boyd Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I think the most recent Lego Catalogue is a clear indication of success for the Middle Earth lines. I am certainly not saying that they did not sell, however we do not know details such as how much it cost TLC to procure the rights to do the lines. They may have paid a premium hoping that the 2 (at the time) Hobbit movies would be as big as the LotR movies and even with a 3rd movie that seems unlikely to happen. I wonder if it would be worth something to an online store to purchase the rights to make specific molds and sets as well. Lego is not the only company out there and it appears at a cursory glance online that there are quite a few LotR Lego collectors. Speaking of other companies, I wonder if one of the bigger competitors like Kree-O would jump on this line after? Perhaps market it as a Middle Earth line to avoid seperation of the movies and bring sone of the sets that were missed? Quote

Just by eyeball estimates Kree-O has done horribly with D&D and MegaBloks cut short and cancelled their World of Warcraft line following lower than hoped for sales results. None of the more major players will bet on a licensed fantasy line for a few years unless something really hits it big at the box office. And I am guessing nobody is hoping for BestLock LotR sets? Balbo Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Eowyn :) This is how I've done Gondorian soldiers: Wow, I really love your figures . Great work! Quote

Balbo Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I'm not sure if there's a special LotR army thread but there's a general army thread, where you can post your armies http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22604&st=1050 Quote

greenalfonzo Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Who has made the best set of illustrations or customs of unmade & most wanted LOTR minifigs? I'd love to see someone submit them as a set of LOTR CMF to Lego Ideas! Is there a rule about CMF suggestions? I think a CMF line would be the best (and probably only) way to get the most wanted characters and army-builders w/new sculpt headgear. Quote
Trunkbass Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 ^ The problem is that a CMF series will have to include the Fellowship of the Ring probably. So that's already 16 minus 9... Quote
Risgrynsgrot Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I don't want to take a dump on everyones parade, but a LOTR CMF line is impossible since it wouldn't go under building toys but rather action figures, which Lego does not own the license for. Quote

bachamn Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 it is a great set - a cheap way to get Saruman, one of the key baddies of the trilogy, with play features too. and don't forget that sweet Eye of Sauron piece! Quote
greenalfonzo Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 That's too bad about the lego ideas restriction. Lego didn't own the Simpson's action figure license, either. Until they did. Quote
