And this has no bearing on anything, but most stores around me had had very little Hobbit or LOTR from day one. Forget about wave 2 of each. If I wouldn't have ordered from shop @ home, I probably wouldn't own the sets. This is coming from a town with 3 targets and 4 Wal-Mart's. Surprising that the availability has been that sparse. I think that shows more how little some stores ordered of the theme instead of it selling well. Keep in mind this is my favorite theme outside the modular buildings.

All the Targets and Walmarts in my area of Oklahoma have long been depleted of the last Hobbit wave for a long time. I did not see any clearances though. But I was in Orange County last week and one Walmart had all the last Hobbit wave as well as the Wizard Battle. So the availability really does vary.

I think a Balrog set is an absolute must provided we get any more at all. To me, the Balrog should be brickbuilt instead of a mold. That would would keep costs done and reduce the amount of grey brick needed for the set. I would include Gandalf with battle damage as well as two Moria orcs with brand new prints. Gandalf could sport Thorin's hair in grey as suggested up thread. However, less accurate but more desirable is his trademark hat with hair attached.

Including Glamdring would drive a lot of collector interest though. It sounds like even AFOLs that frequent a Future LotR Sets thread frequently might skip this set as a rehash without it.

Yeah, given the fact that Gandalf has been in SO many sets, it's really shocking that Glamdring wasn't just molded and included to begin with.

Just an FYI, Gandalf throws away his hat in Balin's Tomb. By the time he actually faces the Balrog on the Bridge, his hair DOES look like the Lego Thorin hair sculpt...

Of all the sets we really want, the Balrog is my absolute #1!

Now, there's an idea, what are your top 5 most wanted sets?

Mine are:

1. The Bridge of Khazad Dum (brick built Balrog, BD Gandalf, 2 Moria Orc Archers w/new helmet or new print)

Just for shits n' giggles:

Moria_orc_VG.png

2. Treebeard Awakens - Brick Built Treebeard, BD Merry & Pippin, Grishnakh

3. The Witch King Showdown - Molded Fell Beast, Witch King of Angmar, Eowyn in armor, Merry in armor, BD King Theoden, the King's horse, and either Guritz or Gothmog

4. Defense of Osgiliath - This could go 2 ways. Either with Gondor Rangers in TTT scene, or the attempted retake scene in RotK...

Molded Fell Beast (works for both), Black Rider, Faramir, Madril, Gondor soldier/ranger, Gothmog, 2 Mordor Orcs

5. Army Builder set for the above set.

Bonus level set #6... Mumakil Attack! - Brick Built Oliphant, Mumakil Driver, Haradrim Soldier, Easterling, Gamling w/horse, Rohirrim w/horse

Epic dream set #7 ... The Prologue - Sauron, Elendil, Isildur, Gil Galad, Prologue Elf Soldier, Prologue Numenor Soldier, 2x Orcs

I doubt Lego would ever make a Glamdring mold. It just isn't distinct enough when they already have the standard pointed greatsword. Sure it's not as narrow as Glamdrign and doesn't have the same shape near the hilt, but it's close enough. I would expect Orcrist loooong before Glamdring since it has a really unique shape totally unlike any Lego weapon.

As for the top five sets I want? Well there are really only five I really want at all so five would pretty much cover everything major for me. They are:

Gondor Soldier Army Builder

A $30 set with 5 minifigures and a Mountain Troll as the large molded creature (these are our dream sets, right? Not what Lego would be likely to do?). The minifigures would be Faramir who could double as an Ithilien Ranger, 2 Gondor Soldiers (with armor, new helm molds, and new shield molds), and 2 Mordor/Morannon Orcs with new prints. The build would be an add on wall piece to Minas Tirith.

Minas Tirith Siege

The first level of Minas Tirith centered around the front gate and Grond for $150. Minifigures would be Eowyn, Witch King, Gothmog, Pippin in Gondor gear, Merry in Rohan attire, Denethor, 2 White Tree guards (even though they appear higher up in the city), and 2 Mordor Orcs. Would also include a large molded Fel Beast and possibly Theoden on Snowmane (though not necessary). Play features would be exploding wall pieces and swinging Grond to bust open front gate.

Oliphant Attack

A $60 set with a large molded Oliphant that has a brick built platform on his back. Figures would be 2 Haradrim, 1 Haradrim Chieftain, 1 Rohan Soldier on black or white horse, and 1 Easterling with shield and spear (since they wouldn't fit anywhere else really...). Play features would be platform on back has lever to pop it off Oliphant's back.

Balrog Encounter

This set would include Gandalf with new hair mold, 2 Moria Orcs with new helms, and the same Boromir we get in Mines of Moria. Balrog would be brick built and come with pieces to create a long narrow bridge with some stairs. Play features would be Balrog whipping action, collapsable stairs and bridge that falls apart in middle. This set would be $40

If we got these four sets I would be more than pleased with the LotR range. Lego could also break the Minas Tirith set into two seperate sets for cheaper. One could be Osgiliath and the other the Witch King vs Eowyn.

1 Minas Tirith (The city and Grond, Gandalf, Pippin, Denathor, Gothmog, brown warg, 3 Gondorian soldiers, 3 orcs)

2 Osgiliath (ruins and seige tower, Faramir, 2 Gondorian soldiers, 1 ranger, 2 orcs)

3 Balrog (Collapsing stairs and the Bridge of Khazad Dum, Gandalf, Balrog, 2 Moria Orcs)

4 Witch-King (Eowyn, Merry, Witch-King, Fell Beast)

5 Mumakil (Mumakil, Mumak Leader, 2 Haradhrim, 2 Easterlings, Rider of Rohan, horse)

Everyone had pretty similar lists I think...

These would kinda be my top wanted sets aswell....

Except I would not really combined Minas Tirith with Witch king and Eowyn..... id rather focus on the assault on the City

A part of me still expects there to be a Lothlorien set based on the creation in the LoTR video game bonus level, even though this existed before wave 2 and it wasn't part of that. Some of the above sets are fine, but I wouldn't want those sets that are basically all figures (it is lego after all; I want to build something), and I would personally prefer some more variation other than sets all based on what happens in Gondor in film 3. Thankfully the waves never seem to be geared toward a certain movie.

Well right now Lego has covered most of the big scenes in FotR and TTT. RotK is the only film still sorely lacking sets.

You're not wrong, but it would still be a personal preference of mine. Lothlorien and Amon Hen would make good kits IMO, and Amon Hen is a very iconic scene too.

I would love to see these as well, especially Lothlorien. Amon Hen, while iconic, wouldn't be able to offer much in terms of minifigs or scenery.

Here are my favorite MOCs of these two scenes, to help visualize them in LEGO:

Personally I'd like to see a Henneth Annûn / Ithilien set. Would be the perfect opportunity to include Faramir and Haradrim soldiers. It will really be a shame if they finish the series without creating a Faramir minifig, he's pretty damn important to the canon.

I would love to have a Lothlorien set but I'm afraid we would never get one even if there is a third wave. It would be like Council of Elrond and this set obviously hasn't been very successful.

If that's the case, I'm happy we're at least getting Galadriel through The Hobbit line. She is a very important figure in Middle-earth and one of the very few female characters.

The Seeing Seat would be a great piece of scenery from Amon Hen.

Can't argue there.

I can't believe really there are no sets of LoTR for 2014... how can this happen?

Some popular (and possible) theories:

(1) The light demand from wave 2 has led Lego to believe it would not be profitable to produce wave 3. As you will see from the thread, the choice of sets/characters in wave 2 has often led to the blame for not selling well.

(2) The Lego Movie came out this year and had quite a few sets associated with it, as it should. This has required a great deal of shelf space, and something had to go to make room for it.

(3) The situation everyone is hoping for: Wave three is already planned, but it is postponed until after the third Hobbit movie gets its run.

I believe this is still speculation right now, and that nothing has been confirmed one way or the other.

No, sadly this is fact. It's April, if there were any LOTR sets this year, we would know at least set names. No LOTR sets can come out in the December wave since that's Hobbit stuff. 2015 remains the hope of all free peoples for more LOTR.

Is there only a limited time of the year when sets normally come out or something?

you seem to not understand how lego does its things. Are you expecting a lotr wave to come out of nowhere? after several toy fairs and retailers catalogues, and that for a 10+ year old trilogy with no potential for spoilers?

technicaly speculation sure. but the only option for 2014 is an exclusive set, and thats very doubtfull after we got orthanc last year.

Agreed...

this said, it's sad to me that the only Castle-themed set, since TLC knows about a long passion for this theme (not including lot of kids playing RPGs on line), it's that stuff from TLM. Ok, we will have a Hobbit wave in December, but it's one of the poorest years ever for Castle addicted.

Good news for my wallet, but I am actually disappointed.

@Godless-Mimicry: There have been some surprise sets before which came out of nowhere (the recent Shredder lair and the DC Funhouse sets come to mind), but never an entire wave of sets  As deskp has pointed out, there was no mention of LOTR whatsoever both in the catalogues and at the Toy Fairs and we already know about the Hobbit sets that are supposed to be released in October/December. And yes, there are certain times of the year when sets are supposed to be released (e.g. two waves of Star Wars set, one in January/February, the other in May/June or August depending on where you live, Superheroes sets in January, March and June, LOTR sets in June, Hobbit ones in December etc.).

Cheers, it's nice to get a helpful approach on the subject such as what you have posted here rather than getting reproached for not knowing the inner workings of the Lego group.
