Bricks cracking... just from being connected to one another?

Sticking pieces in the freezer for a while sometimes helps to separate without needing to apply too much force. It’s usually what I do for stuck pieces (since I never bought the separator). Not sure how this method would work on pieces that are already falling apart just from siting around though =(

I recently had 2 1x4 dark red tiles splitting in half length-wise when I tried to connect them to 2x4 brick. Luckily it was only 2 out of almost 100.

Just found these parts in 10259: Winter Village Station. The set has been built and on display for 2 years. So disappointed in the quality of Lego bricks. 

Anyone else notice this with 1x1 bricks?
