Leo604 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 A new person at work turned out to be a giant Star Wars nut. I knew he liked the Hasbro 3-3/4 figures then I asked him if he was into LEGO and we hit it off. Unfortunately I now live and work at a different location. We still keep in touch though. You should totally get him to join EB, if he hasn't already. Quote
RaincloudDustbin Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 ^ Yeah he should. I should say that not everybody at a LEGO Store has a wide knowledge of LEGO. Someone once pointed to a LEGO Hagrid statue and smartly remarked; ''Oh look, It's Gandalf!'' :/ Quote
jonwil Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 One time I was out doing some shopping and I had a large MOC with me that I was going to show the family later in the evening. (since I dont have a car, I have to carry my MOCs with me everywhere including on public transport etc) Some random guy who I had never seen before talks to me about it and not only says "cool building" (something that a lot of people have done when I have had MOCs with me) but actually suggested I upload it to Brickshelf (mentioning the site by name), something I did eventually end up doing :) Don't know if the guy was an AFOL but the fact that he knew of Brickshelf implies he was at least somewhat of a fan :) Quote
RaincloudDustbin Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 Thanks for the replies. Quote
ShaydDeGrai Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 I haven't met very many AFOLs in person and never one under unexpected circumstances (i.e. outside of a LEGO store or toy show) but I did have an interesting exchange with a coworker once. We were chatting about the Lord of the Rings and, when the discussion turned to fan art, she got all excited about this "really cool" model of the Argonath that "someone" built entirely from "Legos" [sic - I didn't bother correcting her]. She brought up her Pinterest page. I started smiling when I saw my own Pillars of the Kings MOC staring back at me. When I told her that I'd not only seen it before but that I'd actually built it, at first she didn't believe me. Fortunately, I happened to have WIP photos on my phone to prove that I actually was "ShaydDeGrai" I still haven't managed t convert her to a full blown AFOL, but she does consult with me for gift ideas for her nephew and her husband from time to time and I've noticed a couple small Star Wars models showing up in her office bookcase so there's hope for her yet Quote
RaincloudDustbin Posted February 20, 2013 Author Posted February 20, 2013 Wow, I have to say that's the best reply yet. You must have been chuffed! Quote
Dazmundo Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 (edited) I was chatting to one of my friends in the pub, he had seen that my wife had posted a pic of me sat in our living room sorting through my old childhood Lego that I had just reclaimed from my parents house so we got talking about Lego and I mentioned that I really fancied getting GE. He knew the set I was talking about and made me promise to invite him round to build it when I get it. So when I finally bought it I sent him a message telling him, he rearranged plans for the next weekend so that he could travel up to help me build it and we spent the whole saturday building and even started a MOC of a castle in Scotland that we both know well. The castle is still in it's unfinished state as I ran out of grey bricks, but he has since passed me one of his old castle sets (The only one I didn't have from that era, 6074 - Black Falcon's Fortress) and one day we may get together to finish our MOC. So not really an active AFOL but more a dormant AFOL D Edited March 6, 2013 by Dazmundo Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 I was working in a retail store and the customer I was ringing up was buying some LEGO. We chatted for a moment and I asked him if he was active on any forums/websites. He said Eurobricks...so of course I asked him his name... And ever since then, Norro and I have been great friends! So yeah, it does happen. Quote
Runamuck Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 I have met a few AFOL. It has happened that I have talked to some while buying LEGO at flea markets. I remember one guy who said he was on http://www.byggepladen.dk/. I have also occasionally met some adult fans when I buy things over the net and go to their homes to pick it up instead of getting it sent by mail. One of the things that almost always comes up when meting another fan is a little talk about favorite themes. Quote
