It's amazing just how much Lego has changed in this period. The Sets today look more sophisticated and credible. And the primary colour palate of the 90's has evolved into a more complex range of colours.

Nice little trip down memory lane! I've been wanting to set up my 90's Town sets lately and these pics are very inspiring. I'm a little jealous you have an Intercoastal Seaport- that's one I missed and I regret not buying it when I had the chance. It's interesting that you say how much has changed and yet you have a fifteen year old bike shop sitting next to a twenty-three year old Italian restaurant! I agree a lot has changed (scale, minifigs, bricks vs. panels) but current CITY retains a lot of what appealed to me in Classic Town: a wide variety of small and large sets with great primary colors. I would imagine the term "Classic CITY" will appear sometime in the future.

Are you finished with your layout or do you plan to expand? I would love to see it evolve!

I think the restaurant is a re-release from the early '00s when LEGO were strapped for cash - I think I was 3 when the original came out! (1990?)

I love the Port - the second set I remember getting after the 1990 Euro Freight railway. I think there was a slightly larger red one from the same year too.

Not in the photos here, but on Flickr, is the 1996 Shuttle Launch too - perfect for any small town!

Nice classic town layout Ape Fight! Having had my own layout from around then, I can really appreciate these sets. Do you still buy 2nd hand from this era? :classic:

Woah!! So much colour!!

Well I don't think they had the Santa Fe in 1995 ;) but it looks very nice :)

Lol, true. Mostly it's between about 1992 and 2002, although a handful is later, and quite a bit is second-hand from earlier (I got good cheap presents as a kid!). I have every catalogue from 1984 to 2004, save for 1991 and 1993, so I tried to make my Town look as much like pictures in them as possible :classic:

Ape Fight I think what you're doing is great! I'm a big fan of the catalogs and whenever I build a layout I try to make them look as close in style to the pictures as I can. Back in the day LEGO Stores used to have really nice layouts of all the current themes, and their Town displays were very inspiring to me. My one frustrating thing was the absurd amount of landscaping they used- as a kid I never had access to all those trees and flowers. I was lucky to have at least one cypress tree, but there were dozens in some of those pictures!

Thanks again for sharing!

This also brings back memories for me, I a number of those sets myself, or rather I still have them, but they're not assembled...

I'm planning to rebuild as many original sets as I can after I finished re-building my old space stuff. The only one I already built is the big Octan gas station, which from what I've seen still is the coolest and biggest gas station lego made thus far (correct me if I'm wrong, I've just recently rediscovered Lego)

Would love to see your Town recreated too : )

I think the Octan Service Station from 1993 (or mine which was a re-release) was the largest apart from a big Shell parking complex and service station from around 1989. I have a picture of it in an old catalogue, but it was out of production by the time I got into Town.

I agree for being the coolest one, as it is one of my favourite sets (and probably my favourite Town set ever).

I really wish TLG still made these type of scenes when displaying their products. On of my favorite is from a 1994 product sheet. Any chance of a shot of the whole town? :classic:

I liked the way they made LEGO sets before, you know, without the weird shapes used in planes/boats (those giant, one peice bases...) Also, there seems to be a few more modern sets in there

@eurotrash -- While I agree with you about colour palettes, I disagree about the way they make them now, I found the old-fashioned way more... bricky.

One of my fave's too! I can remember almost all the Town pages in the catalogue, as well as all the new sets. I used to look at it for hours as a kid.

No pic of the whole thing (too big / set up in the lounge temporarily around furniture and suchlike), but there are a few more pictures I'll add here.

Lots of great sets, I love the late 80s-early 90s era of Lego so much.  I also agree with above posters about the quality of the catalog product photos back in those days.

I think you raided my bricks! Lmao.  I really enjoyed this.  I have all the same sets (save for a couple).  However none of my survived intact and have been parted out for the MoC bins.  Its nice to see this set up and how well the old sets all worked with each other.  My dock side turned into a moc of a dive reasearch center when i started following the underwater ship recoveries as a kid.
