dundarach Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 The people of the Toffee Mountain Railway, would like their entry submitted to the competition: The Mighty Atom2 In 1962 in order to provide a reliable service from the Capital City of Bricktopola to the Toffee Mountains, deep in the frozen highlands of Topbedroom regions, work was begun in secret on a nuclear train. The designers followed some basic principles of design these being: 1. The locomotive had to be built around their standard 4.5v power traction unit 2. It had to be self-contained, pulling its own nuclear powered 3 C14-Duracell nuclear power units behind 3. The locomotive had to be built using parts already in use on the railways, the people did not want to buy more parts! 4. Upon completion it had to be reliable and in use AND really pull trains Despite early design flaws the prototype was completed in 1964 and trials began. Although proving a success and a hit with the engineers, the locomotive was decommissioned in 1968 and abandoned. It was preserved and refuelled in 2013 It now runs alongside an equally well preserved steam tank engine. Specifications: Reactor Type: Gas Cooled Cooling Type: Nitrogen to Air Designer: Brickzop General Corporation Power Output (Thermal): 3.4 megawatts Power Output (Electrical): 330 kilowatts at 4,160/2,400 volts; 3 phase, 60 Hz. Weight: 38.5 tons Criticality: 30 March 1964 Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Wonderful! I really like that. A great MOC with a fun background story to go with it too. Quote
dundarach Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Many thanks Annie, I appreciate the feedback and love the stuff you create - the fun background story helps set the mood :-) Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Nice to see how you have built up around the battery box to make it look like part of the train rather just being dragged behind like in so many of those early trains. It really gives the train character and the corridors connecting the two parts of the train. Such old 4.5V bits put to really good use again, those old motors are so reliable. Nice build and story. Electricsteam Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Having the minifigs in the old photos was absolutley brilliant! Can we have a video of it running? Quote
dundarach Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 (edited) I love the 4.5v motors, the speed and weight gives the train a nice ride on the layout, however yeas the battery boxes can stick out a bit. Thanks for the nice comments by the way. I worry that dystopia is creeping into the railway :) Video will be created later tonight - assuming we don't having any uprisings which need to be quelled.... Murdoch17 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 (edited) This title had me guessing it was a nuclear powered train.("Atom" kinda gives it away! ) Anyway, I Iike the 4.5 parts usage, along with your rail-side signs. I somehow kinda get a late 50's - early 60's feel from those signs (especially "Happiness") and the nuclear train idea. Reminds me of the 1958 Ford Nulceon concept. (Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia....ki/Ford_Nucleon ) Anyway, good job, and keep up the good work! Edited March 19, 2013 by Murdoch17 Quote
CarrollFilms Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 I love the MOC, awesome job, The background story to it is a pretty interesting read as well. I'd love to see more trains like this come from you. Keep up the great work! Quote
dundarach Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 (edited) It would appear that the Atom2 is generating media interest, reporters in helicopters have arrived and taken video from above... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Pw53F1HaPQg it captures the sound really nicely and sounds very authentic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=1jHzR_RkH9o http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=LlIAlG14vhw The Toffee Mountain Railway from the sky.... dundarach Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Hmmm what was the Mighty Atom 1? No one can ask about the Mighty Atom1 However now that you have :) Failure is not an option in the Toffee Mountains.....the use of large windscreens and strange jet exhausts on the nose proved very unreliable! Truth is after several birds got sucked into the jets the design was scrapped and the exhausts moved to the rear of the locomotive. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Beautiful sound from the iron bars of the 4.5 volts wagons! Very nice layout and amazing creations! Thanks for sharing! Quote
Locomotive Annie Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Ooooooo wonderful train sounds on those videos. The Toffee Mountain Railway is looking very good these days by the way. Quote
Konrad Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 oh man i miss those old school yellow motors! Quote
bricks n bolts Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Fantastic, love it all - the engine, the story and the layout! Quote
Konrad Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 sigh!!! I miss the old lego train system. Something about pf just doesn't work for me.... the lack of 12v pick up rails! lol Quote
