The people of the Toffee Mountain Railway, would like their entry submitted to the competition:

The Mighty Atom2

In 1962 in order to provide a reliable service from the Capital City of Bricktopola to the Toffee Mountains, deep in the frozen highlands of Topbedroom regions, work was begun in secret on a nuclear train.

The designers followed some basic principles of design these being:

1. The locomotive had to be built around their standard 4.5v power traction unit

2. It had to be self-contained, pulling its own nuclear powered 3 C14-Duracell nuclear power units behind

3. The locomotive had to be built using parts already in use on the railways, the people did not want to buy more parts!

4. Upon completion it had to be reliable and in use AND really pull trains

Despite early design flaws the prototype was completed in 1964 and trials began.

Although proving a success and a hit with the engineers, the locomotive was decommissioned in 1968 and abandoned.

It was preserved and refuelled in 2013

It now runs alongside an equally well preserved steam tank engine.

Nice to see how you have built up around the battery box to make it look like part of the train rather just being dragged behind like in so many of those early trains. It really gives the train character and the corridors connecting the two parts of the train. Such old 4.5V bits put to really good use again, those old motors are so reliable. Nice build and story.

I love the 4.5v motors, the speed and weight gives the train a nice ride on the layout, however yeas the battery boxes can stick out a bit.

Thanks for the nice comments by the way. I worry that dystopia is creeping into the railway :)

Video will be created later tonight - assuming we don't having any uprisings which need to be quelled....

This title had me guessing it was a nuclear powered train.("Atom" kinda gives it away! ) Anyway, I Iike the 4.5 parts usage, along with your rail-side signs. I somehow kinda get a late 50's - early 60's feel from those signs (especially "Happiness") and the nuclear train idea. Reminds me of the 1958 Ford Nulceon concept. (Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia....ki/Ford_Nucleon )

Anyway, good job, and keep up the good work!

It would appear that the Atom2 is generating media interest, reporters in helicopters have arrived and taken video from above...

it captures the sound really nicely and sounds very authentic.

Hmmm what was the Mighty Atom 1?

No one can ask about the Mighty Atom1

However now that you have :)

Failure is not an option in the Toffee Mountains.....the use of large windscreens and strange jet exhausts on the nose proved very unreliable!

Truth is after several birds got sucked into the jets the design was scrapped and the exhausts moved to the rear of the locomotive.
